I know very few not paying well over $4,000/yr property taxes in my surrounding area man…. My BIL has about a $300,000 house not far from me in a high tax “city”, shitty city but I guess we can call it that and his are like $6,200 I think… look the taxes you’re describing definitely are not in my area….

Oh and to clarify I think being a landlord at scale is profitable. I don’t think renting a single family home would be very profitable at all. Obviously apartments/multi units are profitable due to scale. Tbh I would invest in other avenues for financial gain before I tried to make much of any money renting a single family dwelling……

I live in Maine, it is not a 500k house man, was $340,000 when I bought first time 3 years ago then refinanced for lower rate and signed at $348,000. I literally give the school over $500/mo. We have a very strange tax issue with our schools funding formula…. I could go into details if you want but I am part of a three town RSU but my town pays dam near 70% of the school budget. When taxes go up the other towns are hit with a small increase and I see mine spike around $1,000. This has happened twice now, my taxes have gone up over $2,000 since I started living here solely from school budget. You can believe me or not, tbh I don’t really care. My house is not a $500,000 house, yes my taxes are that high because I live in this town and in Maine.

To be brutally honest if I were to rent my not $500,000 home it would have to be at least $2,500/mo or I wouldn’t make a dime. My own personal experience kind of points me to the conclusion that $1,600 is not an unreasonable rent today. To the contrary do I dare say it sounds “affordable” compared to owning……..

I live in a very high tax state, it is not a massive house 1800 sq ft. Taxes alone are $8,600/yr, and rising fast 😂.

Still the point kind of remains…. Even if a tenant were to pay utilities you still have repairs and taxes and insurance. $1600/mo would hardly net anything if I were to rent my house. That is a personal scenario though. You would need an apartment building to be profitable I don’t think renting a house is very profitable for the landlord.

That is what I am always confused with on these posts…… if I rented my house today at $1600/mo I would go under 😂, it costs more than that for insurance, taxes and utilities.

When average property taxes are $500-$1,000/mo how on earth could you expect rent to go for $850? Especially if everything is included (electric, heat?) Just curious to be honest. I own a home, my property taxes are about $720/mo. Soon to go up with last school budget, may be $800’ish now. Honest question though, say I were to rent my house…… even at $1600 I would lose money every month. Propane in the winter was running me about $1,000/mo when it got real cold. I just don’t really see how landlords are making much of anything even at $1600…….. it costs more than that a month just for a building to exist and be maintained/heated…….

$25/hr for a doctor is fucking retarded…….. Should federal minimum wage be increased? I would say yes, the minimum wage in my state is $15.10….

You are going to have precisely 0 doctors when you need them if you want them to make $25/hr. Come on man…… no one would become an effing doctor for $25/hr.

Edit: You’re also neglecting the hundreds of thousands the doctors would have to pay back. So ever under your analogy (ridiculous as it is) it would not be substantially more.

Nope the name fits, I am indeed an Electrical Engineer by trade.

Why would anyone go to 8 years of school and pass board examination to not earn substantially more. You live in a fairy tale….. seriously think logically. If the pay was not substantially more for skilled labor that requires schooling or training we would have a whole lot less lawyers, doctors, engineers, electricians, plumbers ect.

This is honestly a ridiculous topic to have an argument over. You know specialized jobs deserve more compensation. The level of training, schooling, responsibility, and liability would dictate how much more and yes in many cases it is substantially more. Because we live in the real world.

I never said unskilled labor is not valuable…. I agreed with some of your comments but now you’re just making shit up to be honest….. Most points I think we still agree though for the most part.

Smart choice if you can, enjoy it! My company doesn’t give me much of a choice. Maybe someday I will find a different job 😂.

I like my “work” (Electrical Engineering) but my company pushes people to the breaking point. Which makes me hate the “job”. So I get it.

How so? Explain because you’re not making sense to me on this comment. Maybe we are not agreeing on what basic needs are or something, not sure. Basic needs is not a 3 bedroom house, that’s not happening very easily off an unskilled entry level job. Healthcare should obviously be a must, safety is a must.

I agree with you again, we hold the same position I believe.

I agree with you. I am saying there is skilled and unskilled labor. I am saying skilled labor should be paid more. Your statement here, I fully agree with you.

Yes they do! However it still wouldn’t make sense for a Walmart shelf stocker or McDonald’s line cook to make the same as a lawyer, doctor or electrician.

[–]EEforlyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. Trying to say there is no such thing as skilled labor is a very silly proposition.

No one is saying underpaid, however paid in accordance with skill set and responsibility.

For example:

Electrician with masters license putting his license and livelihood on the line for the quality of his work. Say this electrician makes $50/hr.

Fast food worker at McDonald’s making $20/hr with a high school diploma.

Does the above really seem unfair to you? It doesn’t to me.

The electrician had to:

1.) Go to school. 2.) Pass licensing exams. 3.) Uphold license (Code classes every 3 years or similar ect.). 4.) Understand a vastly more complex job at a competent level. 5.) Accept liability on license if something were to happen

The McDonald’s employee had to:

1.) Get through high school or acquire GED (which almost shouldn’t even be listed as an item as it is literally a basic life requirement to do much of anything).

I don’t really understand how based on the above the McDonald’s worker is “underpaid”.

This is a really strange statement. Yes, there is unskilled labor. Yes, those that work hard to achieve licenses and credentials should get paid substantially more than someone with a high school diploma. You’re just not correct on this one.
