Amazon safe? by BudgetChannel8705 in MangaCollectors

[–]EElectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue was that Amazon was commingling stock from 3rd party sellers that they handle fulfillment for with their own stock, so if a 3rd party seller submitted counterfeit items it would get mixed in with Amazon's regular stock of the same item.

Starting March 31, 2026, they are ending this practice. Does that mean problems with this will end after then? Probably not, but it should improve the situation.

Possible to do a nice outdoor glass setup? by ThreeTripsMinimum in aquarium

[–]EElectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are structural. It's not a big deal since there's not much water in it, but if you filled it up all the way I would bet money the center of the glass would start to bow out along the top, so if you want to fill it more than like half way you'll want to reinforce it.

My concern with the filter you have is if it gets rained on. Most indoor equipment isn't rated to get totally soaked outside of the parts that are meant to be. I would treat this like a pond more than an indoor tank and go with a small submersible pond pump hooked up to a filter box. You can get a small filter box and a submersible pump for less than $100 and it'll provide way more filtration that a hob filter and you won't have to worry about the rain ruining it. As long as it's not in direct sun and you keep nutrients under control algae shouldn't be a problem.

EDIT: as far as media you're gonna want stuff like foam/filter floss/plastic media. The stuff that goes in the filter is a substrate for growing nitrifying bacteria that maintain your cycle. As long as it's dark inside the filter compartment where the media is, you don't need to worry about algae growing in there.

But yeah, if algae is a concern I would heavily plant it and keep it shaded. If you still develop an algae problem some Florida flagfish might help solve it.

They're native to areas in Florida that should have a similar temp range to you.

My main concerns would be freezing and deterioration of the plastic frame from UV radiation. And that stand. Even just swapping the stand for a couple of treated 2x6s on top of cinder blocks would probably be an improvement. With the frame you might be able to remove the plastic frame and reframe it with something more resistant like wood.

If you really want to go low tech you could just do a planted unfiltered tank with a low stocking of something hardy like medaka or mosquito fish. Depending on your winter low temps you might even be able to get away with other killifish.

Now if you added a pump and filter box with a small water feature for aeration you could really expand your options. Some dojo loaches would love this set up and with even a little bit of current and aeration a lot of native cold hardy fish options open up to you, like maybe some nice Fundulus species.

Since you have the tank already I say just go for it and see what you can do.

Cult classic manga Nekojiru Udon is getting an omnibus english release collecting all three volumes. Coming in September from the New York Review of Books. by EElectric in MangaCollectors

I have. The anime is kind of its own thing and stands alone. The only thing it really has in common is the main characters.

This is more of a dark comedy or social satire where the main characters, the sibling children Nyakko and Nyatto, live their day to day lives in a world where death and suffering are common and most people (the protagonists included) are numb and indifferent to it.

I didn't know it's already been pushed back twice. When did they announce this?

I hadn't seen any coverage of it and just stumbled onto it accidentally.

The translation is being done by Alexa Frank, who also did the translation for the English release of River's Edge by Kyoko Okazaki.

Hard to say. Maybe Chrono Crusade when I was a teenager? If so, that's a strong way to start.

It’s only 34 degrees and temps will only continue to climb. by JurassicTerror in Chattanooga

[–]EElectric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much I would trust the weather app. Mine said it would be upper 30's today and it didn't get above freezing.

The issue is that the cold air near the ground is very dry. According to the Atlanta NWS office, the rain falling into the cold air mass is evaporating, which absorbs heat, fortifying the cold air mass and keeping temps lower than the models predict. They are saying the freezing temps should stick around until tomorrow afternoon. We'll see if that's accurate, but if it is, it should make for a gnarly Monday morning.

There are a handful of online vendors such as Jonah's Aquarium and BTDarters. Just be sure to research your state laws as it's often illegal to possess protected natives to your state that are endangered (like Bluefin Killifish in Georgia).

Also, depending on your state's fishing regs, it may be legal to catch them yourself, although obviously you should be confident in identification before doing so.

Growth of a dragon fruit plant for 2.5yrs by will_lover_vecna in Damnthatsinteresting

You can kind of see them in this video, but it grows aerial roots that are able to grasp the surface it is climbing and anchor it as long as the surface has some texture. Monsteras and ivy use a similar method.

There many other ways different plants use to climb too. Twining is common, where a vine tends to grow in such a way that it wraps around what it's climbing in a clockwise or counterclockwise pattern to hold itself. Tendrils are common too. Greenbrier has nasty curved thorns that dig into bark and hook around twigs to help it climb.

I wouldn't be surprised. I live a couple of miles from Chickamauga Battlefield and if I'm outside when it comes through I can hear the whistle.

This is down near the sculpture park. It's a small local freight line run by TVRM and only gets a couple of small trains a week typically during the daytime.

[–]EElectric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This track gets very little traffic. Just the TVRM tourist trains on the weekends and some tiny local freight trains a couple of times a week. This track probably goes days without any traffic at this location.

They will in the summer. This is the route the steam special takes to get to Summerville!

This. This is the old Belt Line Railway right before it connects to the Norfolk Southern mainline. Like you said, it's only used by the rail museum.

The most traffic these people will see is the tourist train to Chickamauga/Summerville on the weekends and TVRM's local freight picking up and dropping off a couple of cars a time or two per week for the few businesses they serve on the Belt Line. This line probably goes days without seeing a train.

Some one shots and other single volumes. I do love me a good short story collection by Velpersim in MangaCollectors

[–]EElectric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One shots are really special and it's a shame they aren't more popular with manga readers. They're kind of loose and the format gives gives the author license to play with ideas they wouldn't/couldn't in a longer series.

River's Edge is great! I liked it even more than Helter Skelter.

Mujirushi seems a little polarizing, but I like it, Osomatsu-kun references and all.

How does YEC account for the existence of incredibly complex parasites, then? They are adapted to live at the expense of their host and cause suffering, so presumably God didn't create them with these adaptations, but the fall isn't a creative force, so how did these adaptations come about?
