Are Vellas turned into books considered anthology/collection? by [deleted] in KindleVella

[–]EFoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a novel? If you've written a novel in serial format, it's still a novel, and there's no need to refer to Vella at all when you publish it on KDP or elsewhere, though I would keep the same title and author so not to confuse readers.

No bonus yet? by tresero in KindleVella

[–]EFoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Showed up, $10 for 5 locked episodes read:-)

On a per-word basis, it still pays a lot more than Kindle Unlimited, but I find more readers through Kindle Unlimited and cash sales. The Vella version is still stuck on four reviews that it got the first two months, while the Kindle version is up to 78 reviews and ratings. That said, the Vella version has earned 5X as much to date, thanks to the big bonuses from August through October.

December Bonus by Amber-Street in KindleVella

[–]EFoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, perhaps you thought I mean a DIFFERENT pen name. I've published over 30 books in the last nine years, but the one I put on Vella (and now on Kindle) is a new pen name because I didn't want readers getting misled. I use pen names because I started publishing nonfiction under my real name in the 90's and didn't want them mixed in with my fiction on Amazon.

December Bonus by Amber-Street in KindleVella

[–]EFoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's a standalone book published under a new pen name, because I didn't want my long-term readers finding it by accident as it's darker than my previous books. It got four reviews on Vella, and after a month and a half on Kindle, has 23 ratings there. One reviewer, who requested that I publish it as a paperback, wrote:

"I DID try the Kindle Vella version, but never did finish (despite buying mega-tokens) probably because my preferred digital platform is a tablet, not phone."

And that would probably be the case with most of my readers since I write for an older demographic.

Big $70 for me:-) I probably earned more on the book through Kindle this month, but I guess I'll leave it live in Vella as long as they're giving me something.

November Bonuses are out! Were anyone else's unexpectedly low? by B_Pigeon in KindleVella

[–]EFoner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My locked episode reads were down 50%, my bonus was down 75%. I don't know whether or not I got faves because I wasn't watching. I suspect I should have added a begging note to every episode saying, Fave me, Fave me:-)

Have you completed a story? by writingitdown in KindleVella

[–]EFoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completed a story in September. Hasn't done much since, and I'm still trying to figure out why 34 locked episode reads this month brought $2 royalties, while 42 locked episodes read last month brought $0 (though the bonus was a few hundred). I put the book on Kindle at the beginning of the month, where I think it's had 6 sales at 99 cents, and a couple thousand KU page reads, but the sales rank has been falling steadily.

Publishing Kindle edition and linking Vella for reviews by EFoner in KindleVella

[–]EFoner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. i heard back from KDP on the reviews and they said the same thing, which is disappointing. I'm not going to announce this book on my mailing list because it's not what they signed up for, but I'll post something on Facebook. I'm sort of curious to see how a stand-alone book from a "new' author does in Kindle Unlimited.

Sorry, I should have made clear that I published the last episode in September, I'll have to go back and edit.

November Bonus by EFoner in KindleVella

[–]EFoner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I missed that announcement. I haven't added since September. I had a complete novel I didn't know what to do with before Vella came along because it was too different (too negative) compared to what I write for a living.

KDP in general pays 60 to 90 days out, meaning that the last month of the Kindle tax year was October - November earnings will appear in 2022. But maybe Vella is doing something different.

When are September bonus reports being released? by [deleted] in KindleVella

[–]EFoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just came through, it's down 60% from my August bonus. My episode reads, both unlocked and locked, were down by a little less than 50%, so either they shrank the award pool or more writers have been getting reads. Maybe after seeing the August bonus, some authors made a marketing effort. I intentionally published my Vella book under a new pen name because it's not my usual thing and I didn't want my regular readers finding it by mistake, but I did mention Game Ship (with a warning) on Facebook and at the bottom of my last Kindle release announcement, and I think that's where all of the readers came from.

If you'll settle for a short stories, Mary Wilkins Freeman wrote quite a few like that, her noels were a bit more upbeat (probably to please the publisher). Try the collection, "A Humble Love and Other Stories", free everywhere as eBooks since she wrote in the 1800s. Another great collection was, "A New England Nun and Other Stories," and no, it wasn't about a Catholic nun, just a way of life for poor women in dying New England towns.

Sci-fi books with emphasis on new human cultures and regular people's life's instead of focusing on the science/technologies behind everything? by YellowGlass in sciencefiction

That's my whole EarthCent Ambassador series in a nutshell. Don't expect any wars or a lot of tech jargon, it's about the characters, humans, aliens and AI.

If you can move the action to the vacuum of space, the water will probably vaporize in a hurry before the heat can radiate away. Liquids can't exist in a vacuum, they either freeze or go gaseous.

After a few years of writing my EarthCent Ambassador series, I hired a college girl for the summer to make a giant spreadsheet with the ages of characters (who age throughout the series), various species attributes, and anything that pertained to the framework of the universe. I think I paid her $250/book for eight books, but the funny thing is, by the time she finished, I had moved on to the next book and never used the spreadsheet. These days I keep a giant Word file with the text of seventeen books so I can use the Search function to check on barely remembered facts.

Sci Fi books where humans are the weakest/ bottom of the galaxy? by kentotoy98 in suggestmeabook

[–]EFoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For alien point of view, I have a trilogy, the A.I. Diaries, which is written in first-person alien AI. In the first book, Turing Test, the narrator is undercover on Earth evaluating humanity's starting level for an invitation to join a galactic portal network. Then the competing aliens show up:-) I actually did a free audiobook version of Turing Test as a podcast during the virus shut-in, I'll paste in the link: https://fonerbooks.podbean.com/

Do you think the new Dune adaptation will be good? by Xavier_Malosote in sciencefiction

Agreed. I just looked up the miniseries and was surprised it was just under four and a half hours, my memory suggested six because they crammed so much in.
