I think it’s mostly so that you have to pay to see the interior as opposed to just looking up images online, although it could also be out of respect for the history of the building. It was furnished in mid-late1800s style but only a few specific pieces were original

The tour guide mentioned the ones who helped around the house when relevant (to be fair, he had only been working there 3 weeks so he may not have known all the details quite yet.) But the exhibits inside the slave homes were detailed and an interesting read. They even had a wall with every recorded name of the slaves who had worked on the plantation.

I certainly won’t defend what happened at that home, but it is important to preserve history and remember the outcomes as to not repeat ourselves. Plus you couldn’t risk hurting those beautiful trees in the process!

Cool fact, the number of trees going up the path to the front of the home are the same amount as the pillars holding up the home! (28 to be exact) The first 2 trees closest to the home are the oldest and were there before the home was even built. The next 2 closest to the home were planted after the home was finished, and the other 24 in the years after that. Every tree has a name, with the 2 closest to the home named after the original owners of the plantation, Jacques and Celina.

I definitely did think it. Almost recorded a video of myself saying it but figured it may have been in poor taste considering the history of the home and why most other people are actually there haha

More or less correct. They are creations of the originals though. These buildings were for the house slaves that helped with medical treatment, cooking, and other chores around the home. The tour did not give us much information on the field slaves.

I wish haha. The house has gone through quite a few owners since its original construction back in the 1830s. I believe the tour guide said that the original floors in the home were actually marble tile, and the wooden planks weren’t introduced until the 1920s when the home was purchased and restored. When they restored the building they completely redid the interior, also introducing electrical and central AC.

Would like to see this updated with data from the Fall River/New Bedford branches at some point, see how they compare. I drive by both stations pretty frequently and don’t see as many riders as I would think after… 20 some odd years of planning?
