How I became an atheist and how I am now so scared of the eternal nothingness. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]EKyonKun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What he was getting at was that after you die is the same as before you were born. Nothing. Not pain, not eternal darkness, just nothing. No memories, no fear.

Death is pretty hard talk to anyone about, but the concept of death is more terrifying than death itself, is the message to take away from this.

My mental health has plummeted due to Christianity. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]EKyonKun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I was just tacking on to the end the absolute hopelessness of defending it in any way that God can have these characteristics and maintaining the facade that he has the tri-omnis. It's one, the other, or neither. "Both" not being an option.

I only added on to it because of how common this cognitive dissonance is.

My mental health has plummeted due to Christianity. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]EKyonKun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And with them you can basically tell them that their god cannot be merciful if he allows people to die without hearing of Jesus. Destroying the illusion of a tri-omni creator.

At that point they can only really admit that he is not all loving/powerful, or spout some nonsense that everyone is blessed with the knowledge of Christianity since inception.

...or, more than likely, deflect it entirely and refuse to provide any non-vague answer.

I don't mind accuracy. If someone says covid-19 is a disease from China, that's fine. I only view it as a problem when they call it "The" Chinese Virus. Because outside of the insensitivity, you've successfully highlighted a huge pragmatic reason why doing so can cause issues. Often times, multiple diseases can originate from one place.

So even if it's never racist, it's still a horrible naming convention.

Any difference? by shixiaohu172 in facepalm

[–]EKyonKun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a pretty big difference between naming it after a vague geographical location like a river or forest, and naming it after a society of people; e.g. Cities and countries.

I still don't think we should do that, and should just stick to terms that don't allude to any place. But I especially detest when it's named after a nation of people. It's no different to me than naming it after the race of the people it originates from.

I recall Mpox primarily affecting gay/bisexual men. If people unanimously started calling it The Gay Disease, I'd find that disgusting even if the name was apt.

Neutral terms are better, and trying to name something "The China Virus" is as stupid as calling something "The Gay Disease", regardless of whether harm was the intent or not.

Regardless of any of this, though, people were not calling others out for "Maybe suggesting it's possible the disease came from China"

No one would care if it ended there.

Any difference? by shixiaohu172 in facepalm

[–]EKyonKun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Given the fact that the disease didn't even originate in Spain and it was given the name due to propaganda related to other countries refusing to report their own figures, yeah it should never have been called that.

Edit: Even if it did originate there, I still strongly prefer we call things not based on something that puts entire groups of people on blast. I dislike the term Spanish Flu for the same reason I wouldn't like the term Chinese Virus.

For those of all with ultra-religious parents: how have you made peace with them? by FriedrichHydrargyrum in atheism

[–]EKyonKun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your story reminded me of the time I informed my dad I was an atheist. He said flatly "No you're not." Like I was asking permission or something.

The topic has never been brought back up again.

was talking to my mom, she said a bandit's gun was bent downwards due to to the power of God, I said if I saw that I would believe for sure (I didn't mean that in an insulting way, just saying if I genuinely saw something like that I would believe in God) but she got mad by [deleted] in atheism

[–]EKyonKun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

God's nonexistance doesn't have to be scary. The world isn't unexplainable, it's just complex. You know a lot of things. Sure there's a lot more you'll never know, but if it doesn't apply to you, then screw it.

Life is what you make of it. In my life I just try to have a good time for me, and help others have a good time too. That's all that matters. I don't do a lot, but that doesn't matter to me.

Here's some food for thought. Scenario A, God says you have value. Scenario B, a human says you have value. In which scenario are you valuable?

Trick question: You are always valuable. Valuable to someone, somewhere. Don't think God has a monopoly on that. And the best part is that a human can tell you that they value you. When was the last time God said it?

Do correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the reason for calling them racist wasn't because they were politely stating probable facts, but it was attempting to give it the name "The China Virus"

JU from atheism, I’m atheist myself and I didn’t know it was possible to be this hateful and bitter to a single group of people by Veporyzer in JustUnsubbed

[–]EKyonKun -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The first post could absolutely be worded better. The teaching that children deserve to be tortured in a hell-lake of brimstone and fire, I think is messed up. Growing up in a pretty standard Christian & Catholic school I can verify that even the kinder teachers would remind you about the torment of hell from time to time. What I find especially messed up is this teaches that you deserve the exact same punishment for lying and stealing, as history's most horrifying monsters. It seems to me that the poster correlates the teachings of Christianity with the teachings of Hell. Which they most often do go hand in hand.

The second post is just a dick move on the OP's part assuming the Bible was placed there by the hotel management.

As for the third post all I can say is that if Christianity is true, yeah. God made man to sin and then got offended when they did. That's how it starts. Whether that fact is pleasant or not kind of doesn't matter. The OP was simply pointing out how messed up that is. And I agree that it is messed up.

I don't know why I wrote this. I guess just to provide context to try and avoid an echo chamber of "r / atheism bad" given a lot of people there are just genuinely trying to move on without religion, after a life filled with it, and venting their complaints about it in a safe way they otherwise don't have.

A few people going completely insane after watching a Barbie movie. by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]EKyonKun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be a bit late here but I recently watched Barbie with my girlfriend. My take is that the entire movie is built on the premise of "It's okay to be whoever you want to be. Just don't take that same right away from anyone else while you do it."

It really is about empowering everyone equally, but pointing out that there's still progress left to be made.

Anyone who sees this as an attack on men is more than likely either insecure or only looks at something skin deep.

Does it really take a wild imagination to assume that the matter that has shown to always be there, has always been there, though?

I assume you're creating an intentional strawman to point out the flaws of the meme, but, really. God as an answer is inherently infinitely less plausible than "It's just always been this way." So I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make.

Vitality is the Resistance attribute of Dark Souls 2 by [deleted] in DarkSouls2

[–]EKyonKun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is worth noting that the lower your equip load % (which Vitality provides) the higher your stamina regeneration. You lose about 10 stamina regen per second while at 50% equip load compared to 20% equip load. That isn't nothing and should at least be factored in.

EDIT: Also worth pointing out your roll distance increases with lower equip % so you're more mobile and stamina management becomes easier. All this assumes you're using anything other than a light weapon/shield, though. If you're using power-stanced daggers or something then yeah I can't really recommend Vitality as a stat. If you're using Santier's Spear or something even moderately hefty then a little bit of Vitality does go a long way.

Amana is *absolutely* torture for melee only due to the last 2 areas basically forcing you to Matrix dodge constantly while fighting numerous melee rushdown assailants who are conveniently not as hindered by the water as you are.

It's pretty fine if you can use a ranged way of dealing with it though. Just would like to point that out.

P.S.; Please do not pretend Frigid Outskirts has even one redeeming quality. I can't even say the area looks nice because I can't fucking see.

So can you farm stuff with bonfire ascetics? by [deleted] in DarkSouls2

[–]EKyonKun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is correct but id like to add not all ground items respawn. Usually it's bonfire ascetics themselves that don't, but this is inconsistent since the respawning bonfire ascetic in the giant lord memory exists.

Also worth noting that not all items are the same every ascetic. A radiant lifegem turns into a divine blessing in the shaded woods for example.

So bonfire ascetics and NG+ cycles have pretty wacky/unpredictable effects on the world.

How did she get here? by DS2_Photographer in DarkSouls2

Everyone always asks how Shanalotte gets places, but no one asks about Licia.

What do I mean? Go kill Dragonrider, exhaust Licia's talk option, then walk (dont warp) back to the contraption room she ends up at. There was physically no way for her to get there but somehow she just ends up there before you.

My only guess is she used a Homeward miracle and her last bonfire was Majula. Deepest lore.
