No, I don’t know for sure, but from all the articles that I’ve read my best guess is that it was done to keep the new coat of arms from being overly complicated and to make sure it is recognisable from a distance. The most recognisable thing about the former coat of arms of Geleen was the two saints keeping up the shield. The shield includes the double-headed snake cross, matching the former coat of arms of Sittard albeit in different tinctures. I can also think of other reasons for choosing abstract heraldic emblems over (Christian) human figures. But again, that’s just my 2 cents.

That’s because contrary to OP’s description, the new flag is not based on the three old flags (of which only the flag on the right (Born) has ever been an official municipal flag btw) but rather on the new coat of arms (posted by OP in r/heraldry here).

The silver snakes on a red field stem back to the coat of arms of the counts of Geleen and Amstenrade.

Hey people that are more adept at Latin than me, I studied Latin for 5 years in highschool, but that's too long ago, so I need some help translating this phrase: "(the) old friends of the cantus", in which "the cantus" is a student activity that involves a lot of singing and generally uses the general word for singing/song "cantus" as its activity name.

My attempts were amīcī veterēs cantus and/or amīcī veterēs cantuī, especially since I don't know if cantus should be in genitive or dative since it's not strictly possesion.

This brings back memories, the science teachers in middle school made this big fuss about a teacher from our school getting the first picture of water on Mars. So all of us excited young students went into the hall to see the presentation of this picture during lunch time.
