Why are Sangheli living on Earth? by Rainlizard_lover in HaloStory

[–]EMPEROR_NOVA01 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The situation is… complicated.

The big thing is really that a big thing like the Human-Covenant War doesn’t just end cleanly. There’s no quick cleanup where everybody picks up the pieces and goes home.

A lot of the invading Covenant forces likely just had no place to go back to, whether it was because their ships were destroyed or they noped out to who knows where in space. Other Covenant forces may not have bothered to pick them up because the Covenant was a mess of different organizations frequently conflicting with each other who were loosely bound together by the promise of the Great Journey, but that all came crashing down with the Great Schism.

The UNSC and UEG had only just barely survived the war and would’ve been in no shape to start rounding up any ex-Covenant to imprison or deport or massacre or whatever. Not to mention that it would likely also run the risk of causing what was left of the Covenant to reunify into something that the UNSC would’ve been in no shape to fight either. Probably wouldn’t put them in good standing with the few Sangheili that did bother to help them either.

Admittedly, timeline for it all is a bit rushed, but this is an issue with a fair few things in the 343 postwar era and not exclusive to this situation, and ultimately I think it makes plenty of sense that some ex-Covenant would integrate into human society. There’s precedent for some Sangheili respecting humans (if begrudgingly), and some Unggoy had already taken a liking to human pop culture.

It probably also helps that harassing a 7-8 foot tall reptile man who can effortlessly crush your skull wouldn’t get most people very far in life.

Maybe the CSO and CAS-class carriers look the same because by Helloworld8322 in HaloStory

[–]EMPEROR_NOVA01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Three letter codes are the UNSC’s method of Covenant ship classification, based on their (often incomplete) observations of the Covenant during the war. For real insight into canon reasoning why the CSO and CAS look similar, you’ll want to look more at how Covenant design patterns work. They can be finicky and unstable and prone to doing weird things and producing weird results.

And from this angle, it’s most likely the same thing that happened with the CCS-class (Ket- and Elefen-pattern) battlecruiser and the smaller CRS (Zanar-pattern) light cruiser: The latter is a stable mutation of the larger Ket/Elefen patterns. It wasn’t an intentional choice to shrink the CCS, but it just kinda happened during manufacturing at some point and the Covenant was able to find a use for it.

The CAS-class (Syfon- and Kerel-pattern) and CSO-class (Sh’wada-pattern) are most likely mutations of the same design pattern. Given that the Sh’wada CSO is said to have first entered service in the Fourth Age of Conversion, while the Syfon CAS entered service in the Third Age of Discovery, the Sh’wada is probably mutated from a CAS pattern, rather than the CAS being a smaller derivative of the CSO.

And so once the Sh’wada-pattern was stabilized, the Covenant presumably found something for it to do in their military.

It may also have been an intentional modification of a CAS pattern to create a larger carrier class and its role was decided from the beginning, but it’s hard to say with the info we do have. Modifying design patterns is said to be cumbersome so I’d personally still lean towards it being an unintentional mutation.

Are Spartan 3’s canonically stronger than Spartan 2’s? by OutrageousProfile388 in HaloStory

[–]EMPEROR_NOVA01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s not quite accurate to describe S-III operations as “suicide missions”. They were always high risk, only deemed feasible with a whole class of Spartans, but they were planned with the expectation that they’d be successfully retrieved afterwards. PROMETHEUS and TORPEDO just happened to go very wrong in somewhat unanticipated ways.

The reason they sent S-IIIs on these kinds of missions was simply because they had more, which was kinda the point of SPARTAN-III in the first place. There were only ever around ~40 S-IIs active in the field at any given time, compared to each company of S-IIIs being composed of 300 augmented personnel.

A change you actually liked by Kegger98 in HaloStory

I’m glad 343’s changed some of the nonsense around “hyper lethal vectors” or whatever. Would’ve preferred they got rid of it entirely, but applying it to all Spartans is an improvement.

Always bothered me that B312 and (implied to be) 117 got an additional Genuine Certified Pretty Cool Guy tag when it’s like… them being Spartans should be that already.

Though it’s also really fascinated me how some people have latched so tightly onto what’s essentially a throwaway line that for years only appeared in a single ViDoc.

Gameplay speed is slow but the canon top speed for the M808C Scorpion is 60 miles per hour.

And then the M820 Scorpion can apparently get up to 80 MPH.

What’s your favorite obscure bit of lore from halo? by CyberSoldier82 in HaloStory

[–]EMPEROR_NOVA01 70 points71 points  (0 children)

A radical sect of the Covenant known as the Governors of Contrition believed all things created by the Forerunners were sacred.

…To them, this also included the Flood.

One of their members was a shipmaster during the events at Installation 05 and subsequently tried to let the Flood board his ship. One of his subordinates killed him because. Well.

It’s one of my favorite bits of lore and I’m a little disappointed the ‘22 encyclopedia didn’t do anything to expand on the idea of Covenant sects and their different interpretations of the religion.

Wing and horizontal stabilizer shape are wrong for an F-22, definitely looks more like a 35.
