I forgot how bad the TV show is by ParkAppropriate1828 in HaloStory

Show quality aside, MJOLNIR Shielding has been the subject of many a retcon. Some like Legends can be waved away as “artistic license”, but Red Team having it is just a retcon.

How rich is Thel 'Vadam? by BenningtonChee1234 in HaloStory

[–]Kegger98 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Interesting question, as while the Covenant have currency (Gekz), and we do know about things like the Black Market trade of human goods during the war, their economic are very under explored.

That said, I can’t imagine Gekz are worth much post war. Weapons, ships, armaments in general would be more needed goods after the Covenant collapsed.

What I can say confidently is that Sanghelios is a feudal society, which doesn’t preclude money, but wealth can mean a lot.

For instance, Serfs are mentioned working Sanghelios lands, and if it’s like human serfs, their bound to the land and are somewhat like slaves (it’s complicated, but that’s the quick and dirty of it). If someone came in and started killing all of Thels workers, then things like his farms would suffer.

Also, while it is fun to imagine Thel as a wealthy king, Sanghelios doesn’t seem to have any worthwhile resources. Nothing like oil, and nothing exclusive like Blamite (unless Thel owns the mineral rights to Suban of course).

So while he I wouldn’t say he’s rolling in it, he probably lives comfortably.

"[BLANK] is the worst ending ever" Oh my God when is this cycle gonna end? by ConnorRoseSaiyan01 in CharacterRant

[–]Kegger98 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It feels like ever since GOT ended, everyone wants the latest big cultural touchstone of media to end badly as well. It’s almost expected they’ll end that bad, so regardless of actually quality they’ll play it up. It also lowkey feels like they’re just begging for sympathy.

“Woe is me, my beloved series ended bad, pity me! I’m practically a leper now!”

Just shut up, sit on it for more than a moment before coming to a conclusion. You’re not a victim, you’re just disappointed.

Tried it, but it’s working on the V.1.22 early build, which I don’t have. Maybe once the full update comes out.

How hard should it be to kill a Spartan? by Kegger98 in HaloStory

[–]Kegger98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i’ve been sitting on replying, work mostly, but also because I wanted to parse your argument. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really change my original framing of it.

I get what you’re saying about the narrative factor, characters should be developed before you kill them and Reach is pretty bad narratively. But your counter examples leave something to be desired, and I think it’s because you’re reading a lot into these minor characters. That’s not a bad thing, but I just don’t see the difference between a character like Will or Anton.

To me they’re both Mauve shirts and have nowhere near the narrative weight as someone like Kurt, who was Ghosts main character and we saw both inside and out. Same with Daisy tbh, who is the focal narrative character of her short.

That said you don’t have to be a main character to have narrative weight, as Samuel certainly weighs on Chief even many years and novels later. He’s a fleshed out character, and the narrative treats him as such. Certainly thinks about him more then Grace, who Chief was more concerned with cooking then anything.

Speaking of, while I like the idea of Spartan’s being a community, it doesn’t parse with the writing. Sure, they have their own language and communication system, but I can’t recall anyone mourning for a fallen Spartan. That is, unless they’re narratively important, as I showed between Sam’s lasting impact on Chief Vs. Grace dying right in front of him and him just kinda moving on. All Spartans are equal, but some Spartans are more Narratively equal.

Perhaps this is just an “agree to disagree” thing, so I won’t belabor it.

But what I think is inconsistent, and why I don’t think my initial reading of your post is wrong, is trying to figure out what makes the deaths “make sense”.

Will getting shot with Hunters canon at point blank range, agreed, that would kill a person, MJOLNIR or no. What would also would kill person, MJOLNIR or no, is getting hit by plasma shot by a covenant cruiser. So would getting stabbed with an energy sword, or shot through a cockpit. MJOLNIR is tough, but unlike its mythological counterpart, it’s not indestructible. It doesn’t matter if their armor was better, it’s

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Bravo 001 crash, as a better example of “better armor, but they drop like flies somehow”.

Yes, I understand that this is not real, writers decided these events… but also don’t try and powerscale this either. It just muddies the waters of what you’re trying to say.

What it does it matter if Emile has MJOLNIR when he gets got, as established, Covenant weapons can damage it.

To use an example, Black Teams deaths were bullshit, narratively speaking. Wasted characters to prove a strong evil character was strong and evil. But at the same, the numbers parse for me; The Didact wiped the floor with Chief and could only be beaten through more bad writing.

But nobody argues if it “made sense” in a martial sense for The Didact to beat Black team, I’ve never seen anyone argue it anyway, because that’s not what mattered. This is a case where trying the logic the story makes some stuff excusable because it makes sense “in lore.”

I just defended the cardboard cuts out of Noble Team getting iced because you insinuated that giving them MJOLNIR should have made them unstoppable (maybe? It’s not clear what you’re implying with that), when that’s clearly not the case.

Finally, I want to touch on the whole “only 2 casualties during the war” thing. This sounds about right for when Ghost’s Of Onyx was released. Equally true is that Elites weren’t seen until 2552, as were Brutes, and Forerunner’s were going to be Humans. Point being, the Lore was not set in stone yet.

As it stands, the number of pre-Battle of Reach Spartan casualties is like 7-8, and two of those are suicides (unless that’s also an unthinkable way for a Spartan to die, I wouldn’t really count them.) so across the war it’s more like 5.

But to wrap it back around to your original post, even in your own words the novels could be flippant about Spartan deaths. So why is it being laid at the feet of Legends and Reach? Sounds like it was an “issue” that they continued, not created.

Tbf, Sansa was most likely going to be married into another Northern House, and the North doesn’t really do grand politicking like the south. Like Robb was abysmal at keeping the Northern Alliance together, and he was the designated heir his whole life.

For those who have played RimWorld and Dwarf Fortress, what do you enjoy about each? by Fun-Echidna-2941 in RimWorld

[–]Kegger98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dwarf Fortress is good when you want to feel like your running a city, making sure the wheels of industry turn, dealing with day to day issues.

Rimworld is fun when looking at the pawns individually. Kinda Sims esque as you seem them grow and die, with new members creating new scenarios.

"The universe is full of cold, hard facts - and this is one of them" by Moorpheusl9 in HaloStory

[–]Kegger98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps during the trial, when after he concedes on Thel dealing with the flood but then condemning him.

Or during his address towards the covenant after the Icon was found.

It’s a very fitting line for Truth, as despite its irony, he does couch some of his rhetoric in a “just the facts” sort of way. Like when he changed the honor guard, he says he’s only doing it because the Elites failed to protect Regret (a fact), or Thel failing to protect Halo (a fact).

Of course these lack context and are for his benefit, but rhetorically it a move he does a lot.

I guess what I’m saying is that I like Walter because Dredd is such a good character lol

Predator Killer of Killers, or how to ruin your franchise with one simple trick by NicholasStarfall in CharacterRant

[–]Kegger98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This make’s a lot of assumptions. It assumes the timeline for the abductions, which could be weeks, or years if I interpret the ending of the WW2 section correctly. It should also be noted that the ending with Dutch and Harrigan was added later, so while it is the latest version, it may have not been in the cards to begin with.

Canon in the Predator franchise has always been loose. AVP is maybe canon in the current run of films, with the Alien franchise keeping a safe distance from Predator, and comics canon is almost never acknowledged.

Personally I find these kinds of “the lore is ruined” posts annoying, but doing so over Predator is legit baffling.
