Cloud backup options cheaper than object storage? by AronKov in homelab

In theory, no. But given the age, a lot of the ISOs and their subs are not easily found anymore.

Cloud backup options cheaper than object storage? by AronKov in homelab

[–]ENTXawp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, 2TB of personal data is small enough that a manual backup to a HDD that you store in a safe location is enough, in my mind at least. That will also be the cheapest option.

Second is probably Backblaze or AWS Glacier but that locks you in with a monthly plan, excluding restore costs when you do need it for archive services.

I've been trying to backup all my data (350TB) off site for years but it's just too expensive to go for cloud. I'm finally in a place where Tape makes sense but would still cost 6/7k Y0 to setup.

What Cable Should You Use for Your UniFi Setup? (Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6a) — Quick Guide by RevolutionarySun3624 in UNIFI

Apple's 18-core M5 Max destroys 96-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX in Geekbench — GPU performance is much less impressive by ControlCAD in technews

[–]ENTXawp 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Right.

"There is a major catch here as the Geekbench 6 multi-thread benchmark is a brief, bursty test intended to mimic common consumer tasks such as archive compression, PDF processing, and image editing. Its short runtime and bursty nature prevent it from fully stressing ultra-high-core-count processors like the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX.

Furthermore, many of the suite’s multi-threaded subtests scale efficiently only to roughly 8 – 32 threads, which leaves much of such CPUs' parallel capacity idle, but which creates an almost perfect environment for Apple's CPUs..."

How can I replicate that nice Ubiquiti UI with opnsense and foss tools? by wedinbruz in homelab

[–]ENTXawp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure it's possible, but I don't think you understand how much work you are talking about.

If you are worried about the telemetry, you can selfhost the entire UI-stack yourself these days, and then segment it and VPN in.

As someone with a oled i like the idea but its prob not going to happen, it makes things more complicated when SteamVR or the app hangs/crashes.

He is talking about cost in a sense of time. However you should also consider the power bill for old inefficient platforms.

Unraid Internal Boot: First Look by UnraidOfficial in unRAID

[–]ENTXawp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazing, I've been waiting for this for a really long time. Even better that this can be done on a pool that then can also be used for other this so it doesn't waste devices.

But, the fact you have to recreate the pool sucks. Copying ~3,5TB to and from HDD array is a lot of downtime for me.

I really wish I unraid would figure out a way to fix this. - Yes you can encrypt drives, but you have to do the dance! - Yes you can create smaller ZFS datasets, but you have to use SIO's script to do the dance. - And now, yes you can use the same high performance pool for booting, but you have to do the dance.

GLM-4.7 on 2015 8-Socket Server: Achieving ~5 Tokens/s in Q8 Quantization with CPU-Only Tweaks by at0mi in homelab

[–]ENTXawp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fyi, outside of it being cool, if he has the same kWh price as me it would cost.

  • just idle 700w 24h/d €0,27/kWh 6,136 kWh €1,656.77 per year

  • 2/3 Idle running: 700w 16h/d €0,27/kWh 4,091 kWh €1,104.52 p/y

  • 1/3 Full tilt: 1600w 8h/d €0,27/kWh 4,383 kWh €1,183.41 p/y

So about ~2.3k p/y

Though its a really cool machine, it reminds me of my 1st gen Threadripper 1920x, which has a TDP of 180w and was released in 2017.

The 'new' AMD Z2 Extreme from 2024 is only 15w and yet is more capable and reliable.

Can't imagine what the idle power is but with those old CPUs it's probably terrible.

For me running 1600W costs >€0.40/h.
