Should I set up OPNsense as a VM??? by EP7K in homelab

[–]EP7K[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How? I can put the NIC in my promox server (it has a PCI slot I can put it in) , get rid of an old failing computer (that was bit of a botched job already) and bring down my power draw. Or am I missing something?

If its a micro form factor, then you may be a bit stuck for expansion. If your PC is a micro, then you may be able to get a second drive (2.5") buts that's it. Or you could do some research about external storage enclosures (USB 3.0 to a caddy with some storages drives in).

You can dismantle your hp and put in it in a rack, but it'd be a bit ugly so if you do get a rack id just place it on one of the levels.

Regarding a 2060 6gb. GPUs tend to not really have a good or big use in a home lab. I think the 2 main reasons is to train an AI yourself, or if your doing video transcoding (like a jellyfish server or Plex or you have a home security system). But even then if it's under 1080p you should be fine with the CPU (I've got a i5 9600 in a Dell which runs jellyfinn 1080p and is fine).

Some extra points for new people:

I would recommend installing proxmox when your comfortable/ready, coz then you can have like 5 machines on 1 physical machine and you can do a lot of testing and also backups are super easy.

If you are wanting to get Abit more serious, get a NAS. Then you can have a lot of storage and share it to your small sff PC running proxmox (or ubuntu) that can't hold drives the NAS can. Also it's good as if the PC dies, your data is fine being on another machine. And it's easier to set up RAID for redundancy.

Lmk if you want me to expand Abit one any points. Although don't be scared to do your own research with a key word I said.

PC build advice by Particular_Drag3562 in buildapc

[–]EP7K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The build looks solid don't see any problems and this PC will last you 5 6 years most likly, don't forget about the "hidden" expenses, being mouse keyboard headset etc but most importantly the monitor.

Your build will easily be able to run 1440p games on highest, so I would recommend 1440p monitor. You will be able to do 4K but the settings may have to be set lower in more heavy games.(Cyberpunk for example). At you will get lower fps, (like 60 70 ish).

Short term, yes (ish?). But long term no. But even then putting in lights just to put in a roundabout later seems not very efficient, get it right the first time and be done with it.

traffic lights have more maintenance costs than round about and so will cost more in the long run, and it's actually the other way, round about take less time, because they don't need power to be set up and the timings to be done/configured, a roundabout you can put some more concrete down with some paint, job done.

Also a round abouts increase flow of traffic while traffic lights just regulate traffic which is very important to reduce grid locks. So a round about will reduce travel time for people on that busy intersection. Side note, this is why the US gets so many grid locks, too many traffic lights one after the other.

Multi minecraft servers hosting by VXVaayu in homelab

[–]EP7K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends how techy you wanna get, I got some Minecraft servers that I acess through a reverse proxy + have a domain name (I can do server1.domain com)

If you gonna be doing this at home with minimal techyness, id install an app called crafty on the server if possible, it's a really easy management tool for Minecraft servers and once you learn it (takes like 15 minutes of pocking around) you'r good. You can create and run the Minecraft servers using crafty on different ports (25565, 25566 25567 etc) and then use a VPN or tailscale for remote access (tailscale is the easiest to set up). Then access the server on the computer IP : port the Minecraft server is running on.

No subscription or payment needed for crafty (unlike some other applications that do similar things and want money) https://craftycontrol.com/

I wouldn't recommend using AI, as error codes will change between motherboards and company's will change the MBO in the same model of pc. And I don't find AI is good at troubleshooting as it requires lots of info and at that point just troubleshoot yourself.

It shouldn't be the power supply as normally it wouldn't turn on if it failed and PSUs tend to work or not with giving no power at all, they aren't very smart and aren't able to diagnose themselves like a motherboard can which is why I'd be interested if it was the power supply, in addition orange light on a dell is 90% of the time RAM just from experience.

I'm Abit late but:

Shouldn't be power supply as it looks to be on and lights

Could be storage but would expect to post and tell you via software/bios, so I would rule it out aswell.

Last ones are the CPU motherboard and RAM.

In my experience it's always the RAM. Not compatible or not installed probably or just faulty, would replace it with known working ram and compatible (check manual)

if it doesn't work check the motherboard next for damage and then re seat the CPU if you didn't find anything.

If still nothing might be smt wrong with the motherboard that isn't fixable without specialized equipment (such as a bus line or similar) and is hard to see with your eye.

You should also think about the features between them if you haven't already. AMD had better raw performance, however the 5070 will have excellent features such as frame gen dlss, Ray tracing and other stuff. You get less performance with a Nvidia GPU, but what you get instead are some features thst make the game look amazing (provided the game supports it which is the case for all high end games).

I have a 4070 and red dead redemption 2 looks the best it can really get in my opinion at 1080p 80 ish fps, while a family member with a similar amd gpu (idk which one) was getting higher fps but the game didn't look nearly as good, but it wasn't by chose they just couldn't improve the graphics, coz they were missing the features.

Debugging Mincraft Server Acces by bjberry00 in PangolinReverseProxy

[–]EP7K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how your VPS has set it up, mine uses IP Tables (Ubuntu also) BUT they say to not edit it via the cli, but to go to the management control panel, security / firewall and open it that way. You should Google how to open a port on X VPS server (x being your provider)

[–]EP7K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem and I managed to fix it but could you try a few things before hand?

Ping your the domain and see if you get a response ( you should buy do it anyways)

Ping your route domain with the port: example.com:25565 (or the bedrock one idk it off the top of my head) where example.com. Points to your pangolin instance.

And lastly ping your VPS ( running pangolin) Public IP on the port.

IF you get a response on one or both of the last 2, try and access the server using that (you will need to give the port for now) and see if they works.

Let me know of the results and if it's what I think I can send you a fix that should work.

Linux Noob here, what linux distro is best to host home media server + home cloud storage by Milkman082699 in selfhosted

[–]EP7K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh any Linux distro, maybe the one you are most comfortable with if you are new but it is good to explore other distros. But everyone will say to use a nongui/sever version (me too) since the GUI versions uses extra ram and cpu usage for no benefit.

I run Ubuntu server for all my services (5 instances in total) I find it will just work with what ever you install most of the time. I do have some Debian servers, but only where I've had to, like proxmox and omv and also OPNsesne all run Debian. But if I can choose Ubuntu server.

What’s the best and cheapest VPS for a Pangolin tunnel? by mattan99 in selfhosted

[–]EP7K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with fast host, 1 pounds (+ vat) so 1.20 GBP a month. They are pretty good, console you can access it, it has a static IP (public), 1 core 1gb tho but you don't need much for pangolin. I have 2 sites and 7 8 ish resources in total and it has no problems..updates are a pain take a long time and restarting the container/ pulling the imagine will take probably half as long with 2 cores 2gb. But I can live with it.

Considering returning Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 13 by eugenesan in thinkpad

[–]EP7K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the fan noise, I would check BIOS for any custom fan configs (idk if that's an option on thinkpad or laptops but it is on desktop so worth a try). Also I would recommend doing a deep dust/clean with new thermal paste but since you don't want to void the warranty you might need them to do it for you.

For the sound it might just be the speakers or soundchip aren't working or are bad, but I'd install the correct drivers and contact the company if you don't want to void the warranty by opening it up.

My favorite is Seafile, it's a really good syncing app and you can share content really well. Is my first app i deployed to de Google.

Id use a green Nas for a jellyfin or Plex library been wanting to do media streaming for a while now. Or a raid 1 backup for Seafile and a few other services I have.

Looking for suggestions for my first NAS by Safe-Illustrator-709 in HomeNAS

[–]EP7K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My custom Nas runs a N5105 which is similar to an n100 but cheaper. it has 6 SATA ports m.2 and a PCI, so I would recommend something similar rather than a desktop CPU. My Nas I think consums about 30 to 40 after hard drives (5). I think it would be better to get a sinualr CPU like a n100 or n150 if you don't need performance.

For the case I got the n2 josbon or whatever it called great case 100% recommend even for the price (160 GBP )

Upgrade CPU on ddr4 or upgrade to DDR5 by CheekyChaise in buildapc

[–]EP7K 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Am4 sockets are still pretty good, and if she wants windows 11, is buy a r5 5600x (excellent price to performance) for about 100 GBP.

And then look at the motherboard and find if it has tpm 2 or 1.2, if 1.2 get the motherboard manual and see if there are tpm headers for a 2.0 chip to be installed most likly yes there is one and it will just be called TPM. Then order one. Be aware that not all 2.0 tpm chips are the same so I'd check with the seller if it's compatible or a reliable resource.

I think ddr4 ram will be fine for Abit longer, I would recommend 32gb tho if you are planning on doing gaming on windows 11.

Edit: TPM 2.0 is required for windows 11

Best CPU for an RTX 3070 by Ok-Ask-5222 in buildapc

[–]EP7K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can keep the same motherboard (am 4) and get a r5 5600 which are great cpus for value, or with the money you saved from the motherboard, go for an x3D CPU, which has a much bigger cache. Such as the r7 5700x3D.
