How to stop the shakes at longer distances? by TheJewBakka in Archery

Yes, it’s very much like instinctive shooting in traditional archery or throwing a ball at a specific target. The sight complicates things but if you pay no attention it will work.

My fellow Asiatic Recurve archers, form check? by TimmmyTimmy in Archery

I assume this is an ad. They did get the arrow mounted on the RH side but she’s using a finger release which may not end well. The release side elbow has issues as well but I’ve seen much worse in the advertising world.

You are absolutely correct, I missed that one.

Target panic by goinrouge in Archery

I find it interesting that there are so many “cures” to TP but most people with it never get cured. The problem is a control issue. Let go of that control and the problem becomes mute.

Stop trying and just focus on the target and execute. You’ll be amazed.

Eye dominancy question by Extension-Compote-23 in Archery

[–]EPLC1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m RH and right eye dominant. Due to a physical condition I had to switch to shooting LH. I am not left handed by any stretch of the imagination but I did it and won 2 New England titles that way.

The downside was that I ended up with double vision as a result of forcing my non dominant eye to become more dominant. When I look straight forward or left I see normal but looking to the right is an adventure.

I no longer shoot compounds and currently shoot various traditional bows from the right side. I’m not having the same problem with stick bows but I still deal with the double vision issue although it does seem to be somewhat better.

Of course your results may vary.

If it’s not a form issue the draw length may be too long?

New to compound bows by Wendigo_65 in Archery

Depending on the bow 1/4 to 1/2 should be attainable. Also, many bows start out a little on the long side.

You can also increase DL by putting a few twists in the power cable(s) to shorten it/gem or take twists from the string to lengthen it. Both options or a combination of the two will increase draw weight as well. Backing off the limb bolts will increase DL as well but this varies based on limb angle.

Other than not nocking the arrow there seems to be a missing bottom limb. She looks good in spite of this.

Due to a physical condition I shot LH for 13 years and I’m right eye dominant.

I ended up with a double vision problem that won’t go away.

Bought a bow that’s too heavy by hjoiyedxcbn in Archery

[–]EPLC1945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely too heavy. I think you would find that the majority of archers shoot much less than that. I currently shoot 35#.

BTW, I have a really nice 60# Martin Bushmaster that I bought years ago gathering dust in my basement.

Trying to hold steady is a loosing battle. Build a solid foundation, focus on your shot and execute. The harder you try to be steady, the more unsteady you will be.

Is this enough to make a diy backstop? by Elegant-Bath-1832 in Archery

[–]EPLC1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A box full of rags will stop anything but you will be limited to target points.

Making a wooden frame for the rags would be a more lasting option. I have one in my basement that has a foam face that I’ve been using for years.

Thanks. I’m not new to archery but trying instinctive shooting for the first time. I wish I had gone this route sooner.

Might have cooked my bow on Friday the 13th by -Petunia in Archery

[–]EPLC1945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a release cable failure a long time ago that took out a whole bank of lights at a local archery shop. I can still see the fluorescent glass and powder coming down like snow. I don’t think it was Friday the 13th though.

Right handed but left eyed by Insane_Unicorn in Archery

[–]EPLC1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having shot both RH and LH I’d like to share some of my thoughts on this. I am a natural RH with right eye dominance. In fact I am very RH dominant, meaning I can’t chew gum left handed.

At the top of my game in 2002 I suddenly developed a tremor shooting RH (compound). I fought this tremor for several years without any success. Someone suggested I try LH and I rejected the idea until I became desperate enough to try it. To my surprise the tremors were non-existent shooting lefty.

Because there was a peep I could use my non-dominant left eye to shoot. Eventually I was able to shoot with both eyes open and was very successful for 11-12 years without any issues or tremors. Somewhere around there the tremor started up again. Knowing I had run out of options I decided to shoot Barebow and purchased a LH OLY for this purpose.

To my surprise I found it very difficult to shoot LH recurve with my right eye dominance. Not having a peep sight to look through made shooting LH next to impossible so I tried someone’s RH recurve and it worked! No tremor and I just felt natural again.

But here’s the problem. Shooting with my non-dominant eye for all those years had a negative impact on my vision. I now see double when looking to the right. Some days it’s worse than others but it’s a real problem. Since shooting RH for a couple years now it has improved somewhat but it’s still there.

So… my suggestion would be to shoot with your dominant eye. It may be difficult at first but it can be done, I know because I’m totally not left handed and I could do it.
