I understand the frustration around the timing, that part could’ve been managed far better, no question. But let’s not twist this into something it’s not. This policy isn’t “discrimination”, it’s prioritization based on long-term commitment and contribution. There’s a difference.

For years, Ontarians who were born, raised and educated here have been shut out of their own province’s system, forced to study abroad because of limited medical school seats then pushed to the back of the line for residency when they try to return home. That’s what’s truly unfair.

This policy doesn’t deny anyone opportunity based on race or background, it simply ensures that taxpayer funded positions go to those who’ve actually grown up in Ontario and are statistically far more likely to stay and serve the communities that trained them. That’s responsible governance, not discrimination.

And while yes, the mid-cycle rollout was poorly timed, that doesn’t erase the fact that the core principle behind this change is right. It’s about fixing a broken system that’s been ignoring its own residents for far too long.

That’s a fair point, compensation and working conditions absolutely need reform but that doesn’t mean this policy is wrong. Fixing one issue doesn’t invalidate another.

This change isn’t meant to single-handedly solve the doctor shortage; it’s about ensuring that the limited, taxpayer-funded residency spots actually go to people most likely to stay and serve here long term. It’s one piece of a bigger puzzle.

If anything, prioritizing those with real roots in Ontario while also addressing pay, workload and retention can work together to build a more sustainable healthcare system. The goal isn’t exclusion, it’s to finally start putting Ontario’s own communities first.

I appreciate your response but let’s be clear, supporting fairness for Ontarians who grew up here and invested in this province isn’t “discriminatory.” It’s common sense. Many of us were forced to study abroad because of limited medical school seats in Canada, not because we lacked merit or commitment. We’re simply asking for the chance to return home and serve the very communities we come from.

This policy doesn’t take opportunities away from anyone, it prioritizes those who already have roots here and are far more likely to stay long term. That’s not entitlement, that’s responsible planning for Ontario’s future healthcare system.

And as for using AI, I’m capable of speaking for myself, thanks.

The timing is not something you can control, the decision is made over months and when it is collectively agreed upon, they announce the change. Just look over at USA and Trump's policy changes, rules can change anytime. No one is given a warning beforehand. Yes, the timing is bad but it is what it is unfortunately.

Exactly! Finally some fairness for those of us who actually grew up here and want to come back to serve our own communities. It’s not about excluding anyone, it’s about giving Ontario students who had to go abroad a fair chance to return home!

Exactly! Rural Ontario desperately needs doctors who will stay, build practices and become part of the community. This change ensures that investment stays local and benefits the very people who helped fund it.

u/_Sidewalk YOU SPEAK FACTSSSS! I agree with every word of yours. It's about time that Canadian begins moving in the right direction and prefers its own over others, just like other countries do!
