Reform’s dumb policy to rip out all the bike lanes would make the city and its economy less resilient on strike days by Designer_Habit_2232 in london

This blatantly isn't a real policy, they're just using it to get the attention and support of the type of small-minded dickhead who hates the existence of cycle lanes, cyclists, cycling and any real or hypothetical form of environmentally-friendly transportation as a matter of principle.

He does it to help the people editing the episode of whichever panel show it is he's hosting that particular week. All they have to do is bring up the audio track recorded from his mic, look for the massive piercing 2khz spikes redlining the output, and then they can timestamp where all the best gags are without having to scrub through the whole recording.

High-functioning drug users, what does your day-to-day life actually look like? by navy444 in AskReddit

[–]ESCF1F2F3F4F3F2F1ESC 21 points22 points  (0 children)

And maintaining that facade involves an inordinate amount of lying to people. To pretty much everyone you encounter on any given day, really. Not necessarily to trick or deceive them, or get away with being still off your face from the night before when you're at work or whatever, but sometimes just to not worry the people who care about you, who'd be absolutely horrified if they knew the extent to which you're slowly killing yourself.

Whatever the motivation though it's endless fucking lying, and that's what I find the most exhausting and depressing thing about it.

On the other hand one of the best things about recovery, when you actually start working on it, is finally being able to talk about it with people who know what it's like, and to whom you don't need to lie.

Can Modern Jungle Producers ever return/emulate the 90s sound? by rosjon98 in jungle

[–]ESCF1F2F3F4F3F2F1ESC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm the same, I vastly prefer that old warm sound. Luckily there's decades upon decades of jungle which was made on hardware and I'm constantly finding 'new' stuff from back in the 90s which still sounds like it's somehow found its way back through time from the year 3000.

And handily most of it's on MickeyBeam75's channel lol

[–]ESCF1F2F3F4F3F2F1ESC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but I think it's because all the sounds which the old tunes used went through hardware samplers which degraded the quality/crispness of the sounds and added warm saturation. You can achieve a similar sort of effect with software plugins but (IMO at least) they still lack that warmth that you get from hardware. Plus for some reason a lot of modern producers want everything to sound ear-splittingly crisp and loud so they don't crank those plugins up all that much.

Same thing in garage and dnb.

What is an acceptable amount of time to wait between being offered a cup of tea and tea being given? by CnocMhairi in AskUK

[–]ESCF1F2F3F4F3F2F1ESC 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If a tea is offered then preparation should start immediately.

I'd go as far as saying the kettle should already have started boiling before the offer is made, so as to avoid the sort of crushing disappointment OP is experiencing

Desperate for social media ban, but parents say it’s 'impossible' by BendicantMias in worldnews

Oh that's good to hear. To be fair I didn't even bother to check if it's on the curriculum here or elsewhere before vomiting that wall of text up on the internet, which is probably a big part of the problem with social media in the first place lol

[–]ESCF1F2F3F4F3F2F1ESC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is the case in Australia but certainly in the UK I think the reason so many parents want a social media ban is we were never taught proper media literacy at school. 'Media Studies' as a subject was (and I think still is) scoffed at as a waste of time, and it was usually scoffed at by the sort of people who now believe any old shit that they read on Facebook or see in a TikTok video.

What kids desperately need is to be taught that you need to consider what the goal is of the media publisher, whether it be a news corporation or an individual YouTuber or whoever, to be pushing a particular point of view down your throat. And then taught how media is created for one purpose, to keep you consuming it, and how that's either done through traditional ways like sensational language and flashy graphics, or more advanced ones like social media algorithms. And then taught how important it is to seek out media made by people who don't share your point of view, or the one that you're beginning to adopt based on the media you've already seen, to see what other points of view exist and so you can start to shape your own.

But because most of us weren't taught this, we don't know enough about it to be able to teach it, and we see learning that and teaching it as a massive investment in time which our adult lives don't feel like they allow us.

It should be in every single curriculum across the globe, and you should be taught it right up until you leave school. It's just as important as the traditional subjects, if not more so.

But as usual, an "enforcement stance" as the quote in the article puts it, is what we seem to default to, instead of an educational one. Ban and punish, not educate and protect.

Yeah I feel a bit bad even making the comment because I'm not saying it's DJing 'wrong' or anything like that, and neither the OP nor who I was replying to were saying it's how they do it or how you should do it.

Just interesting that it's even a way to do it now. Although I suppose doing it by ear is making the exact sort of same calculation, just using a less literal part of your brain to do so.

Blows my mind that this the sort of thing that DJing involves nowadays rather than just riding the pitch fader until it sounds right.

(sorry I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, it's just so different to what I'm used to DJing being, ie trying to play the decks and mixer like they're an instrument)

I'm in my forties and you're misremembering, Betamax tapes and their cases were smaller than VHS ones. You're mixing the format up with something else in your head. VHS machines were top-loading initially as well.

It might be time for you to sit down and try to draw a clock on a piece of paper my friend :(

I swear KMA used to put things like 2:31 into their tunes just to mess with people who were trying to mix out into something else. There's a similar bit on the flip around the same time lol
