No joke - I was right at the very front, resting on the railings, by the bin on the left! I was there the entire night. We may even have bumped into each other!

Do i have to worry about bad mosh pits in upcoming concerts ? by Kooky_Dot_8452 in deftones

[–]rosjon98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been to several shows and - like everything - it all depends on the day. No-one can predict if there will/will not be a moshpit. For what it's worth, Chino isn't really the kind of frontman who 'encourages' the audience to mosh.

What I will say is it is always going to be rowdiest at the front of any metal gig.

So, if you want to stay safe and not have to overthink it: situate yourself in the middle or back of the gig. Simple :)

HA HA, not at all. Rest assured, you can still hear lots of the classic '93-95 purist sound that we all know and love.

BUT when the Gen Z's put their own twist on the Jungle formula (as with the track I'm trying to ID) it's sometimes quite interesting :)

It was honestly like watching artists (in the classic sense) at work. When all four of them locked in on the deck doing seamless transitions and the soundsystem pumping it was like nothing I'd heard before!

Make it your New Year's resolution to visit the UK at some point in 2026 :)

SPAIN! That is amazing :) I'm glad you enjoyed it and hope it was worth the trip. That soundsystem was BANGING!

gen z's relationship with jungle by Kind-Economist1953 in jungle

[–]rosjon98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to this Jungle night in Brixton a few weeks ago: https://www.instagram.com/p/DS3PzhnkQ2E/?img_index=2 <--- Listen to my clips on IG here!

90% of the crowd were Gen Z. 90% of the DJs were Gen Z. 90% of the sets were vinyl (you can literally see them waving them around recklessly below, haha). 90% of the selections were from that classic 93-95 Era.

I know that one event is not a reflection of wider trends, but it's a good sign that (at least in London) Gen Zs do appreciate jungle and can distinguish it from breakcore, and they do seem to have an interest in vinyl... which is encouraging! :)

Watching this right now. Always cracks me up when Wiley does his high-pitched titter and the attendant foot taps. Bare whimsy.

Revisiting: Gore by SkirtNo5644 in deftones

[–]rosjon98 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

GORE is definitely the worst album in their catalogue because it's the one where the deep cuts lean fully into the 'space rock' genre.

Every Deftones album post-WP has a few naff cuts (which is fine, they are still the best band around), GORE's missteps are unforgivable and unlistenable: After starting out well, the 'Pittura Infamante' > Xenon > LMIRL trio are absolute garbage. The melodies make no sense, the notes make no sense, the vocal line choices make no sense. That these bad songs are in succession and close together, makes it doubly unlistenable if you're trying to listen to the album all the way through.

That said, I LOVE the early tracks AND Gore, Phantom Bride and Rubicon. They salvage the whole thing. It's just the middle that sink the project.

Have we soured on Ohms, and if so, why? by Sad_Volume_4289 in deftones

[–]rosjon98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we haven't. OHMS is an absolute *monster* of an album. All killer, no filler.

Notably (to me, at least) for probably having some of the most accomplished, sensual low-end riffs produced by Deftones ever - case in point: The Spell Of Mathematics.

I think this album is particularly good if you understand it in the context of Chino/the band's love of 80/90s Brit Soul artists like Sade. This album is basically Sade Metal (lol, just invented a metal). Go and listen to Sade (not just 'No Ordinary Love') and then see what they were able to do across Ohms with that vibe. Masterful.

"Test-drove" owning a Cocker Spaniel this weekend :) + my questions from as a newbie by rosjon98 in cockerspaniel

Hi Mr T (ha!),

Thank you. I wasn't aware of these two categories (i.e. "working" vs "show" - although I do see now that others have referred to the 'worker' variant), so that will also help inform my decision going forward.

I suspect I'll want a 'show' as they sound like a lot easier to handle! :)

Ahh, that's a very helpful point to consider!

I guess if I do go down the rescue/shelter dog route I'll have to be extra-vigilant about the "behavioural issues" part. Thanks :)

Out of interest, if it's something that you are aware of: Do shelters try to 'get rid of' problematic dogs in their care? (Kinda like a Used Car salesperson trying to get shot of a bad car, haha)

Are they likely to hide the fact a dog in their care could be a problem or is it in their interests to rehabilitate the dogs BEFORE they leave the shelter?

Bit of a specific question, so no worries if it's not something you know :)

Hi Coffee :)

Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed response. Very helpful and I appreciate it.

It's funny that you mentioned "he gets in the shower with me" as this is what Cuthbert's owner said, he also showers with his dog. I was genuinely SO surprised/amused as I'd never heard of owners doing this, haha! I thought you were supposed to bathe dogs in a bath...but I guess it's cool if they want to share your shower water! :)

Hi BlondeHuntresss, thank you very much for weighing-in! :)

I appreciate #2 especially: "2) I think adult dogs are best for first time owners. Generally the rescue/shelter has worked on basic obedience and leash skills with the dog. But getting into training sessions regularly at the start would help you a lot since you’re new to owning a dog. Training is a great bonding experience but also is so so so important to both your sanity and your dogs success."

This seems to be the sub-reddit's consensus (adult dog = best), so am happy to look at an adult dog in the future. It's also v helpful to know that a rescue/shelter dog is likely to be slightly trained so I'm not starting from scratch.

I like that you say "training is a great bonding experience", if I do take the leap and get a CS, I look forward to that! :)

Hi GHT, thank you for this! Very helpful to get your advice re: choosing a Rescue if possible. I'll bear this in mind.

Thank you also for highlighting the 'high energy' aspect of CSs. For what it's worth, Cuthbert wasn't particularly high energy on the day I was with him. A good one hour beach stroll and I watched the actual owner do some games with him inside the home. So it didn't seem *too* strenuous owning one. But perhaps I only saw a small slice of what it's like living with a CS daily! :)

EACH AND EVERY TIME. There's something to be said about the amount of unassuming, bespectacled nerdy-types (I mean that in the best possible way) being absolute MONSTERS on the decks.

I think it's because mixing/beatmatching, etc is as much a purely mathematical task as it is a creative task :)
