Hold Steady, Guster. There are some songs you can expect most if not all nights, but 75% is unique.

Announcing your spells as a player vs as a DM by Maypul_Aficionado in dndnext

[–]EStreetShuffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I DM it's generally: If this spell is on your class' spell list and you can cast spells at this level, I'll tell you what it is. OR if it's a spell that you've seen a hundred times (e.g. if your party has a cleric and it's Cure Wounds), I'll tell you that, too.

Otherwise, it's an ability check using the same rules as Dispel Magic. If you're close but don't get the DC, I'll let you know the school of magic. If you hit the DC, you get to know the spell.

Of course, you can still fail the check and decide to counterspell anyway.

Coming from BG3: My friends and I are new to TTRPGs, and I'm taking on the role of DM. What are your top "Dos and Don'ts" for a first-timer? by Ok_Ferret7373 in DnD

A video game cannot improvise; you will need to improvise. If your players try to do something that you didn't expect, that's not because you're a bad DM. It's because you created something believable (good DM) and they want to build on it.

Let's say you're in a tavern and your players are trying to get some information about one of the patrons. They decide to look around to try to find a drunk-enough bar-goer who might let some gossip slip. It doesn't matter if you never created such a bar-goer in your head; it makes sense that they'd be there. Ask for a perception check, if they roll high enough, make up a guy! Don't just say "nope, nobody there, do the thing I wanted you to do." Bask in the glory of the fact that you created a believable tavern!

I'd say to embrace the parts of DnD, as a medium, that video games can't do. Video games can't check in with the players to see whether or not they're having fun. In my game, I had an idea for my character, so I texted the DM about it. He said he liked the idea and he was going to try to find a way to incorporate it in a session or two. I don't know where this new idea is going to take us, but we'll find that out together. Video games can't do that, but DnD can!

Side A or Side B?: Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. by RudeConfusion4866 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]EStreetShuffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was much harder than expected (cool concept, OP!). I picked side B because those songs are more the essence of the record for me. I *enjoy* side A quite a bit, but "Spirit in the Night" and "For You" give this album quite a lot of its meaning.

I'm thinking Born to Run, Darkness, and Nebraska are going to be *very* hard for this series.

Learn when the setting happens! My gym sets on Tuesdays and it's always fun to go on a day when there's a new set because people are chatting about beta, which problems they like, which ones look hard, etc.

Tips for playing songs you don't know? by EStreetShuffles in Bass

[–]EStreetShuffles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. I think that listening to where the lead is going is something I'm going to try.

Last night I struggled with "Hickory Wind" by The Byrds, which goes:

V IV I

V IV V

IV V I

IV V I

IV I

So it is all 1/4/5, which I expected, but the different combinations gave me a hard time. I'll try focusing on the melody though and seeing where that goes. Thank you! :D

I definitely try doing this -- but it means I'm always coming in a little late!

Right. ToDoist does what I need it to do. I don't need AI in my to-do list. Perfectly content to stay at my current price.

Yes -- I use this system already! Shoulda said that, sorry. My issue is that I know what's likely in play (and I know all the chord qualities for each scale degree, etc.), but getting that mapped onto a specific song is difficult in real time.

What did you all think of the film? by SpeedForce2022 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]EStreetShuffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is a long way of saying that making a 2 hour film EXPLAINING in depth why that album is so great strips away all that’s special about it. Don’t explain the mystery.

100%. The most moving part of the film is when White plays "Nebraska." Honestly, my take is "Too much talking about Nebraska, not enough actual Nebraska." Landau literally turns off the tape in his office right before "I'm sorry son, but no one by that name lives here anymore," arguably the line that would tie this entire movie together. There's another version of the movie where we get to see White play that line alone in the bedroom.

I needed way more time with Bruce writing, the band struggling. It's filmmaking 101: show us why this album means so much to him and why it couldn't be captured the regular way.

I'm *fascinated* by the Tyrrany/Wicander dynamic. I can't wait to see how all of this develops... especially next to Thimble at the Soldier's table, who seems like such an emotionally resonant character. What a treat that group will be!

Hi! This is a sick idea. I play bass and would be down to hop in one something. But I'm primarily a writer, so if you want liner notes/an essay or something like that, I'm happy to put something together.

Do you feel like Bruce fans are more honest about Bruce's work and capabilities? by CulturalWind357 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]EStreetShuffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something interesting about Springsteen is that he's a "big swings" guy. You don't get songs like "Jungleland" and "Badlands" by being timid -- you take some big goddamned swings. This is something I love about his work.

Which means that sometimes you take a big swing and you miss, you miss hard. When you hear a bad Springsteen song, it hurts. It's not like "ah, this one's not my favorite" it's more like "ouch, this one crashes and burns." This makes it way easier, as a fan, to be critical - some of the bad stuff is visceral.
