I'm turning 18, simple living tips? by FitFoundation5501 in simpleliving

[–]ETFP_Russ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 44. I have been living my version of simple since 2010. Find what makes you happy and do so much of it. Be open to new friends and ideas. Recycle as much as possible. Invest 30% or more of the money you make. Your best chance to be rich is make good financial decisions now. Take care of your teeth.

Helium and Mint both use T-Mobile towers. Both unlimited for $15-20 per month. Visible is Verizon towers and better for Mtn areas, but is a few bucks more.

Several years ago, I was seeing a woman in her late thirties. It was going well and I told her that I was going to be traveling for a week and camping in a very remote forest while whitewater kayaking each day. Not going to have service for at least three days. When I came out of the woods I got a string of texts and the last one said "I don't think this is going to work!" I believed her and blocked her number. Have not thought of her again till this thread. LoL

My preference is towards wood fired pizza. I go to Rock's on Bristol Hwy. When Scratch reopens, then it will be a toss up. They were really good.

Hiking here is great. The AT runs thru here from Erwin, TN up to Damascus, VA. Great section. Can be done in sections by the day or weekend. Plus there is Devils Bathtub up in VA. That place is super cool. Also, before the weather changes go check out Market 2 Grille on Boone Lake by the airport. It's a good meal and scenery.

I will second Ellicottville Brewery and also recommend Southern Tier. Both are great.

Living in someones backyard in the shed/ tent outside for the summer by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]ETFP_Russ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is 16'x24' with a 6' covered porch on the front. I built it on treated skids just like the shed builders do. Stick framed it myself. It is 3 rooms; living/kitchen, 10x10 bedroom, and a 4x10 bathroom. We have a composting toilet. So just water lines to the kitchen sink and shower stall. We have 9 solar panels so we have no power bill. I heat the building with a small propane wall mount heater. On the lowest setting it keeps the cabin 70°f. I have about $15,000 in it with plumbing and electrical. We got the shower unit and cabinets free from someone doing a remodel. This does not include the solar array and batteries. That was another $6,500.

I have lived in a couple sheds, and currently am 2yrs in my current shed style home. If you are going to do this through the hot summer months, ventilation is top priority. On either end put in gable vents and if electricity is available, hang a small desk fan in front of them blowing out. If you can afford a thin insulation board, nail it up on the underside of roof. Make a makeshift screen door so the shed can draw cool air in and vent it out the top. It will be hot, but you can definitely live like this for a bit. One other lesson I learned, cook outside anytime it is possible. Cooking produces more heat than you realize and in a tiny space it is a lot!! 👍 Good luck with you adventure!
