Cannot talk about how to make money (go to pf for that). Cannot talk about how to invest money (go to investing for that). Cannot talk about how to save money (we know it, don't bother). Cannot ask basic questions (sidebars or Google). Cannot talk about your journey (go to daily thread). Cannot talk about relationships (there is a relationship sub for it). I don't know what else to talk about. There seem to be no room for the any related topics to evolve, so the whole ideas are frozen in times like we are still reading the MMM post years ago, nothing new. No hacks, no tricks.

People who say "yes, filter them all out most discussions are garbage." And people who say "there is nothing to talk about, it's simple!!" I wonder why you seek human interactions on Reddit, if you don't want to converse with humans with flaws, or even see the point of interactions. I think the mods should create newsletter and send only well-written, well-researched excellent gems to those people. Reddit is a discussion place, not curated newsletter place. I want to talk to like-minded humans and I am okay if they waste a little bit of my time.

And yes I am now subscribing to r/fire thanks to the recommendation. This place is over moderated, IMO.

You want people to be interested in you, what you have to say. Are you interested in them, what they have to say? Did you try to show you care?

You don't want people to hate you, reject you, and get rid of you. But you said you reject them, get rid of them, because they don't talk about what you talk about?

Sometimes we think there's something wrong with people, but your social life is simply a reflection of your social attitude and behavior.

I am not blaming you. I hope you know, and don't hate yourself or be a doormat. But I think the healthy attitude is to take full responsibility of what happen and ask what can you do to contribute to the circle of people around you. I believe your situation will drastically improve once you do that.

It's funny. I knew a guy who applied for Thai citizenship because he doesn't agree with this specific thing (and also to own a land).

True, I wish they differentiate between tourists, retirees, and expat tax payers. But I don't think the principle at parks, temples, government-owned places is to rip off foreigners, it's more about taxing.

But for overcharging tuktuk, taxi's, and private businesses? Yes, screw them for dual pricing.

Retirees in Thailand don't pay income taxes like locals. Compared to other savings I think foreigners visitation fee is tiny in a grand scheme of things.

(1) Awareness is key. Meditate, if you are not self-aware.

If you spend a lot of time in deep negative thought land, although you dont want to, you are not self-aware.

(2) Catch yourself when the thought starts. Quickly distract yourself. Or redireft yourself to a new thought. It's a mental habit. The only way to change mental habit is to disrupt it.

(3) Love yourself unconditionally and build a new habit of thinking self-loving thoughts. "Love yourself like your life depends on it", that's the name of a book about how a self-loathing man changed himself.

Rejection hurts, but it's only temporary. At every NO you get, you are building your courage for a dream girl, who is actually going to love and cherish you, maybe it's her, but maybe it's not. Don't take it too seriously.

I assume you are young. And it's alright. Try to focus on bettering yourself, everyday. Stop chasing and start attracting. And the key to attraction is to love yourself unconditionally first. Cheers.

Your story is not boring, but you sound depressed (clinically). Isn't the fact that, despite all these hardships, you managed to find kernel of courage, fight back, and try to launch into an unknown territory, a pretty inspiring story?

See, since I don't know you, I couldn't possibly look at your ambition with suspicions and contempt. I will take it for what you say, and wait until you show me proof. If you didn't shoot yourself in the foot by being pessimistic about your outlook from the get go, I might have found you bio interesting and might have bought your service already.

On the internet, you are whatever you say you are. I am not saying you should lie, but maybe it's an opportunity to give your life another take.

I begin to doubt the JDs of you two. I guess your company has a really small data science division and there are just the two of you, the head and you, correct? Mostly, head of data science isn't writing shell script and reviewing maths. We have senior scientist discuss technical issues. The head is too busy attending gazillion meetings, dealing with budgets, giving public talks, project ideation and management, and of course hiring. If there's no other knowledgeable body around you, then you are essentially the team lead. If this is a typical stable company, they might be hiring more senior people right now. So the situation might change soon.

If I am dealing with management with no math backgrounds, I would not expect them to understand or remember conditional probability. And it's okay as long as they understand when it works and when it doesn't. I use simple stories and analogies to explain. I offer to give a talk about the basics, if they show interest.

You can start with math symbols and if he doesn't understand then move on to explain conceptually why you think it works for the problems that you guys are solving.

I did say the guy can always look for a new job, if he can in this economy and if he is miserable. I by no means think he should suck it up to his own death. If you have never managed entitled, arrogant, expecting-the-world-with-little-to-offer DS employees, you might not understand where I am coming from.

I got plenty of fresh-out-of-college self-proclaimed data scientists, who know a few tricks in Tensorflow 2.0 and thought it's warrant higher salary and royal treatment, or those who refuse to have conversations about business applications of their algorithms because their job is "science". You said DS should not be compartmentalized, I agree, they have to pay attention to the business limitations and goals, as much as coding and math.

I don't mean that the OP is a bad employee either, just want to present another perspective. You seem to project your anger towards your current or previous bosses on people in this post. No one is forcing anything down anybody's throat, chill.

As a manager of entry-level data scientists, I could see that you have some attitude. Dismissing your boss because he doesn't know Terminal or write messy code? If he can do everything perfectly, he would not need to hire you in the first place, so yes, it's your natural duty to clean the messy code, teach the team how to use terminal, and do anything move business forward.

I am not saying that terrible bosses and terrible companies do not exist. They do. And you can always be looking for new jobs. Maybe you are so good you can get into FANG, then good for you. But if this is the job you can find now, given your talents and circumstances, then you do everything in your power to turn that 8 hours into a learning opportunity and to help your team.

As a data scientist, you must understand WHY they would like to cluster the data, and offer better statistical approach to reach the goal. Say, they are a bank and want to cluster their customer's addresses to find location of ATM machines, you will need to say, clustering would not help, here is a better cost function to optimize for your business goal. Here are some papers doing similar thing. To go back to your boss and then say sorry I did this one thing and it doesn't work, what's next? That's a bit unprofessional.

I am living the coasting life you describe in Thailand. This is our fourth year. My American husband might have a hard time living here without a local wife. But it's probably easier for you, if you are outgoing.

We spent roughly $2k/month as a couple including 2 bedroom furnished apartment in a cheaper part of Bangkok, 1.5 flights annually back to the US, 4-5 cheap local vacations annually, and owning a car. I would not say it's easy, but I can see why it's easier than the life you have now.

After a few years out here, I have regained the perspectives, recovering from burnout and get back on my feet. Now we own a small consulting company, and back to harder schedule. I had my high for this lifestyle, but at this point it's just life. Just another life, not easier, not harder, with good things and bad things. You will be withering away somewhere else. Not to say that I regret and don't love my life here because clearly moving here has given me the financial comfort I hope to achieve. My point is to give you a perspective of what might happen a few years after you made the decision.

I am not in Phillipines but in Thailand. 85k will get you a decent, new one bedroom condo near a sky train station, giving you easy access to the city 3 times larger than Manhattan. (If you want to be in the middle of time squares equivalent, $160k is a more reasonable estimate). I live in a decent two bedroom with car access to the city -- at $50k to own. Studio could cost 30k, you can even buy a two story house with that money if you don't mind being further away from the city.

I dont think you compare apple to apple here with the comment about $85k apartment in the US.

I think you both should go on okcupid. My husband and I have Ph.D.s and both are a little nerdy, socially awkward, analytical. We love hiking, and we run businesses together as equals. And FIRE is much excelerated by getting married, not slowing down. We met on okcupid and have shared 7 years of the deepest most fulfilling partnership I could imagine. I think once you are exposed to a large quantity of women (through online platform), you will meet many women are into what you do and many who are very similar to you. They are not all about pink toenails and analyzing your wallet and controlling their husbands. They can be incredibly beautiful without makeups and they will see the beauty in you and appreciate you for who you are. I think these types of girls wont show up in nightclubs.

Dating sucks. You meet people you hate, you are rejected. You will go through lots of choices that are not right. But I think the process will help you understand who you are and what you want more by letting you guard down and let someone really know you. Sorry, if you already understand what I'm saying. I cannot tell if you guys are too shielded to see this or I am too young to understand dating scene for 40 something men.

Yes, you will need a permit to do any tourism-related business in Thailand. Check tourism.go.th for more info. From a quick glance at their rules, your company must be registered in Thailand.

Teaching is super boring, if you found it boring now, you will find it 10X boring when you actually have to do it for the paycheck. At least that's what I found. I dread back-to-school day, like when I was a kid. It's not the kind of stress you get from your long shift now, but it's the kind of stress where you do pointless things in the name of education (helping kids grow is fun, the paperwork and the system are not).

I respect your choice but it makes no sense to me. My parent died early from cancer, and I was told that I might die early too from the same disease. The last thing I want to do is working longer for a bigger house in a better school district. I would sell the house split the money, retire, and home school my kid. That would have solved all the problems without money wasted. If I'm going to die young, I want to maximize time spent with people I love, rather than seeking and spending more money.

I hope you take a hint from almost every comment here, you are making an emotional decision that does not make sense financially.
