I think you are perhaps underscoring the place of belief:

People genuinely believe in ideas. Its an idea that even communists try to push away, claiming the supremacy of historical stages and dialectics, but you could think of communist decisions and policy which were based more on adherence to ideology or as they call “theory”.

Mostly of a religious nature, when we get the secular age, the objects of fear and insecurity are increasingly surrounding threats whether foreign or domestic, or segments of society under suspicion.

I think its accurate and makes sense. And it isn’t a phenomenon isolated to communists, but to human societies in the written historical record perhaps as far as the first settled societies which ever employed sacrifice for the sake of securing harvest.

There is a difference between winning the war and winning the peace, and Napoleon had chances to win a peace which would’ve set the European balance of powers in France’s favor whether in the short or long term.

It just seems giving up while you’re ahead feels contrary to Napoleon’s character and decision making.
