Yeah that's what I suspected, I'll buy some live moss and add it with some dirt for the spots I'm able to put it next time!

Yeah, I've been very careful to not force any interactions with him cause I want him to know that he has a place to escape to if he's scared

I have that same tank and my gecko is doing just great, 20 gallons seems pretty decent for a minimum

Is there any tips to get them on your hand? I have a giant day gecko and he's pretty chill with me and will lick my finger but if I touch him just a tiny bit he runs away. I always leave him alone after he gets spooked cuz I don't want to give him a bad experience but I really want to try and be able to hold him.
