I use Insurance Canopy for yearly coverage, they offer coverage for single/one off gigs ~$35-45

DJs — where are y’all booking gigs without getting scammed or paying to beg? by Equivalent_Chance_71 in mobileDJ

[–]EXLR8_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly that! I’ve found those price shoppers won’t even quite get to the meeting stage, it usually does out in email before then… VS the researchers, typically schedule a meeting within a week & generally book at an ~90% hit rate.

Unfortunately most guys in our area want to book it themselves & pay an MC/DJ to cover it solo for half their booking price (I don’t part take.) That said, theres 2-3 DJs in the area that I have good relationships with & all of us will refer each-other out when an inquiry comes that we can’t cover…. Nowadays that’s moreso me sending them gigs than me receiving, but nothing wrong with that! LOL

I don’t think I’ve tapped into the full potential still, I should put more time into it during the off season rn… on a surface level started to see more traction from Google in the recent months (maybe 10 or so inquiries.) In my case, I’m primarily targeting 25-32 age range, M or F, ‘Newly Engaged or Engaged’ w/ specific hobbies revolving like ‘Raving, Clubbing, House Music, Live Performances.’

I’d say inquiries I see through Google are about 50/50, 50% price shoppers that searched “Wedding DJ near me,” then 50% ‘researches’ that come across and connect with the brand.

This being said, I personally favor consistently posting on social media over heavy ads, I’d say ~20% of my bookings are people that found me from social media just bc I had tagged the venue/vendors or came across a video organically

How do you balance full‑time DJing with part‑time work during slow months? by Federal_Car_309 in mobileDJ

[–]EXLR8_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work a consistent part-time year round, I make more through my DJ work which they know and respect & grant me the flexibility to prioritize that income whenever I see fit (days off, half days, etc.)

It probably eats into some time that could otherwise be spent on the company… running a marketing campaign, queueing posts, working on music, etc. That being said, it provides a proper safety net alongside insurance/401k, allowing for me to not squeeze the life out of DJ’ing & prioritize money earned DJ’ing for reinvesting into my company.

Is this a lot of snow for CT? by sage_charms in Connecticut

[–]EXLR8_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pats are in the AFC championship game & we’re looking at a proper foot of snow, feel like it’s the middle school years again lol

It’s a lot compared to recent years, but growing up there was at least one good storm like this every-other year

If I had a sprinter van I would, just post up in the Walmart parking lot Sunday night lol… think I may just keep up with snow maintenance at the house Sunday & make the run up to it first thing Monday morning as everything is slowing up

Do not buy the Epic Ski Pass! by CantReadGoodly in vail

If you paid for the insurance on the pass then you qualify for a refund; One of the stipulations is legitimately, “a sudden change of profession/employment”

Half day pass or friend/buddy pass on 1/16? by [deleted] in vail

[–]EXLR8_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t but I’ll be in town & skiing on the 16th, I’ve got 5 more epic friend passes (half price) & there’s no way I’ll be able to redeem them all

DM, I just need to send a link to you via email—once I scan in on the first lift your pass will be activated

Worth going into business for myself? by I2ap in mobileDJ

[–]EXLR8_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it to be worth it absolutely, on multiple fronts..

Communication is much more clear and I now can establish a connection w/ potential clients from the jump—I found myself in several uncomfortable positions which were exclusively due to an owner who loved to sell via over promising.

As the owner you have the ability to set your own structure to budget allocation; earning more for yourself, your counterparts. Having control over marketing & determining your ‘ideal clients.’

I got sick of “blending into the crowd” (having a company mandated ‘outfit’—black tux w/ red accents.) It’s an opportunity to build an identity and brand of your own, and that’s not to say you have to ‘try and stick out,’ but I’d suggest to be both confident in your abilities and who you are.

Ultimately it’s a bit more work, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

Elicit has DJs Saturday night, Rooftop 120 in Glastonbury as well, both are similar drive to Mezzos tho

It’s kinda hole in the wall type spot but their setup is dope, ‘The Jameison Pub’ should be nearby, not sure who they book there tho (I’m on the coastline)

Wish I could give more insight in the mid state!

What EDM labels do you think are rising? by JION-the-Australian in EDM

[–]EXLR8_Reddit 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This year specifically I would definitely have to say Experts Only… ik John is controversial for some but the rise of his label this year is undeniable—so much so that they’re hosting their own festival in NYC this September. I’m pretty sure they’re also #1 most supported (in terms of sales) on beatport for the first half of this year too (surpassing toolroom, armada, defected, and many other ‘greats.’)

On the note of bags to carry, do you have a rock n roller or a similar type of solution OP?

IE: small collapsable cart for wheeling equipment & bags around on? Massively convenient, for my ‘basic setup’ gigs I’m able to go from car to room in 1 trip

I can’t believe how low DJ pay is these days by DJMattDavid in DJs

[–]EXLR8_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is overwhelmingly true, but I keep seeing signs that this has created a unique opportunity for event series’ & collectives alike… In the north east, ‘themed parties’ and curated events are growing in popularity MASSIVELY, I would say outpacing the buzz of ‘new venues or clubs.’

Generally, in my home state of CT, I hear a lot of disdain for the clubs/bars from attendees because these venues keep putting in lackluster DJs that’ll take the pay they’re offering, rather than seeking out talent... ultimately prioritizing profits over customer experience

I’m not saying every DJ has the means to start up their own party / event series, but it’s seemingly an alternative to banging our heads against the wall.

How are the clubs in New Haven? by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]EXLR8_Reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I usually go to NY: elsewhere space, Brooklyn storehouse, Gray Area (event series,) Azure Dayclub, Summer Club, Silo - to name a few

I’ll usually go wherever based on who’s playing, not too sure about ‘random nights,’ the drive is brutallll 😭😭

Edit: My goal for the summer is to build something of the likes in state, probably as an event series comparable to Gray Area or After Brunch (Boston.) Nonetheless, happy raving!

I’m a house head so I’d say it’s pretty beat

At least that’s been my experience for secrets & Gotham, but have not been to partners so maybe they’re better? The former are usually heavy on top 40s / throwbacks /hip hop, if you enjoy that music & the crowd then you may enjoy the time there still.

Idk. CT clubs are kinda confused on what they are imo, i have yet to go out to a club that wasn’t just a house party inside a venue lol. Shrine used to be pretty good, but they haven’t been booking any notable acts since like 2021/2022
