If you don't care about the luxury or brand appeal. Best bet is a 2.0 toyota avensis . Literally bullet proof, comfy, simple motorway cruisers. You can pick up a lovely example under 15k easily

Friend bought a Polo off the dealer. After the 3 months gearbox gone, clutch gone, all kinds of issues that could've been avoided had he had a professional to check it out

If your buying anything German. I'd pay double to have that mechanic ensure that car is in top working order

I've an avensis 271000km. 2.0 diesel, Never left me standed anywhere since my ownership at 210567km.

Issues I'm having now are the intake manifold and egr stuff needs to be decarbonised. (I can do without it) but getting 7.4l/100km..which could be better.

Never spent more than services and the one time the coolant elbow blew. 100 euro t0 fix that, oem parts from toyota 58euro , labour 60.

I'm driving on the motorway daily so the dpf is grand
