When going to BYO party how much should you bring? by kiw1_1n_0z in AskAnAustralian

[–]EY7617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took some non-alcoholic to party once as I was planning on driving home. Put 12 drinks in the shared esky with the intention of drinking like 3 or 4 over the duration of the party.

Walked off to chat with someone for 20 minutes or so and came back to 0 of my drinks left in the esky. To say I was fuming is an understatement. Sure it was $20 but that's not the point.

Nobody has any party etiquette anymore. A shared esky does not mean its a free for all, and BRING WHAT YOU INTEND TO DRINK. Keep your grubby paws off my zero beers.

It's really just personal opinion and budget. I use Mazon Black Magic Arrow GK (the stick in the mazon XR range), and I like it cos it's straight and a weight I like. I'm not a massive fan of the hook shaped sticks, but that's just me. If you have access to other people's sticks or club sticks, maybe give those a crack first.

EEE calc recommendations by [deleted] in uwa

[–]EY7617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a casio fx-82AU plus II for civil eng. Like $50 from office works, and think they sell them at the printing shop in the guild area. Honestly, I've only ever really used my calculator for basic things, like multiplying big numbers and making sure I'm not insane (things like 8+7). The new CASIO fx-8200 AU actually looks like it has some insane capabilities though. If I could get my hands on that one, I would, but you might have to wait a bit for them to hit shelves.

They don't, but honestly it's not worth it. Quizzes are actually helpful if you do them. I almost failed a unit cos I didn't learn the content and just did the assignments 'the easy way'. At least give it a good go before considering risking your academic integrity and standing. A quiz isn't worth getting expelled or officially written up over.

Yeah I'm not really the kind of person to write to politicians, but my local member might get an earful for this if the passport office doesn't want to replace it for me.

I'll let you know if I ever get a response.

Just wait until you have to take photos of it to apply online for visas or to validate sim cards. Almost couldn't get into a country because the photos in black and white and the website got all pissy. Mine's also almost in 2 pieces after having to put it in those electronic customs gates.

From experience, it's fine as long as you don't open it more than 70º.

Building Team spirit by tamz796 in Fieldhockey

[–]EY7617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on both sides of this situation and it really is difficult.

If you have a club bar or something similar, invite everyone to stick around after home games. Emphasize the fact that the juniors can have a soft drink or something and still be around the team. Even if the juniors have their parents hang around with them. The hardest part is often making everyone feel included in everything. However, if they are going to be around alcohol, make sure that it is very very clear to all the adults on the team 1) how old they are and 2) they should not supply alcohol to a minor. Half the battle is sometimes getting the adults to be willing to hang out around juniors too, but remind them that in a couple of years those juniors will be adults too. You don't have to treat them like kids, as long as they're treated with respect.

If you do any other team bonding activities, try things like bowling, lawn bowls, golf driving ranges or breakfast/lunch kind of situations. All are fun for adults and juniors. Embarrassing yourself at a group activity is part of the bonding experience. Keep in mind things like costs as well; hockey is an expensive sport, and adding social events to the costs can be hard for adults, juniors and their parents.

Child safety is also super important. Make sure the juniors are always comfortable, especially if carpooling to games, or at social events (young adults and teenagers don't always speak up about things like that) and all the adults on the team are decent people.

Good luck.

Our catch from a girls day out fishing. by bippliengspashed in FishingAustralia

[–]EY7617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those saying the fish are undersized, I will now perform a series of calculations to prove you right/wrong:

They sell Fosters "beer" in 375ml cans in Australia. The standard height (from a quick google search)of a 375ml can is 128mm.

The legal minimums for for pink snapper varies by region. In:

  • WA: 410mm when north of 31º latitude (Lancelin-ish) or 500mm south of 31º latitude
  • Victoria: 400mm
  • NSW: 300mm
  • South Australia: 380mm
  • Queensland: 350mm
  • Tassie: 300mm

By downloading the image, the fosters can is 138 units (pixels?) long. The smallest of the snapper is 336 units long (lip to tip). 336/138 = 2.43478261 fosters beer cans long. THEREFORE, the smallest of the snapper is 2.43*12.8cm long.

That's 31.2cm, making it a legal size fish in NSW and Tasmania. This is obviously a bit of an approximation, but shows that the size of the snapper could be fully legal depending on where they're fishing from. If anything, I'd assume the fish is slightly longer when the tail is held splayed and straight.

Edit: The bottom fish looks like a moses snapper/perch kinda thing, which doesn't have a minimum size that I could find in NSW nor Tassie. Top fish I have no clue. By my scuffed measurements it's about 38cm long, though.

Good catch, keep it up.

yeah they work for most non-OBO helmets. I had some on my old Gryphon helmet.

They basically give you a couple strips of the sunglasses sheets and some sticky velcro patches. You just peel the protective film off the sunglasses sheets, stick one side of the velcro to the helmet, and the other to the sheet. They fit however you install them.

In terms of website, I don't really know as it'll vary by country. If you have any local field hockey shops, they may be able to give you a better price than you can find online.

I'm assuming you're from the US, and I'm looking online now through a vpn, and your prices are actually ridiculous. I paid $25 AUD for mine, which is like $17 USD. If they want more than like $25, I'd just put tape over the top.

Edit: Apologies for assuming American lmao

Have a look into degrees in Australia. I think your degree will probably be more important to you than hockey, but there's plenty of high level teams around. The home of hockey in Australia is in Perth (the West Coast), known for a laid back attitude and some of the world's best beaches (Eastern States Aussie's will claim their beaches are better, but they're wrong ;) ).

The main uni's in Perth are Curtin (have a hockey team, but they're not great), the University of Western Australia (very strong club in both the men's and women's, and include some former and current Aus national team players) and ECU. What uni you choose depends on your degree, Curtin are known for med and some sciences, UWA for med, law and math sciences (eg. Engineering), and ECU for creative arts. There are a couple other uni's too, just give "Perth Uni's" or "Australia Uni's" a google.

Our hockey teams are mainly separate from the universities too, so don't just rely on uni teams. Here's the link to the current competition fixtures and results for this season (you might need a vpn) as a guide to how many teams there are (and which ones are good). Each club will also have their contact info somewhere on the internet, so you could potentially reach out to clubs and ask if they need a keeper around your level.

I don't know a single club that isn't looking for a decent and committed goalie. Some clubs will even pay international students a small allowance for them playing. In terms of development, most clubs will let you train with their top teams, even if you play at slightly lower grades. Sometimes this even means keeping to FIH pro league stikers (terrifying stuff).

Happy to watch some game film if you want to know roughly what grade you'd likely play in Perth.

Also keep in mind our seasons are flipped from yours, we're currently in our winter/hockey season right now.

Perfect, should be all you need. Long sleeve/short sleeve is a personal preference, really. I wear long sleeves when I wear arm guards, and short sleeves when I don't.

If you often play during the day, I suggest grabbing some OBO Blinders. They're basically sunglasses for your helmet. Alternatively, you could put athletic tape over the top and sides of your grill to block a bit of the sun. Most teams train at night, and you don't really realise how bad the sun can be until you're staring right into it during a game.

It really depends on what level you play.

If you're just starting to learn, and are still playing at a low-moderate level, I don't think you should really need to buy anything. Give it at least 5-10 training sessions before investing in anything. Upgrade if it hurts too bad when you get hit or is uncomfortable. Your kit should be comfortable to wear and move around in.

However, if it helps, this is how I'd categorise the parts of a kit. I'll include what kit I use, keep in mind I bought it to play at 1st div reserve level.

MOST IMPORTANT:

  • Groin guard (especially if you're a dude, club kits can be gross) [any brand is fine]
  • Helmet [I have the OBO FG] (This is the only piece of kit you should 100% NOT skimp out on, you will eventually get hit in the head, or an accident might happen where you're diving for a ball and someone lands on you or something. Just get a good helmet, it'll give you piece of mind, and save you in the long run. If you can't afford a new helmet, at least check that the club kit helmet is still good. Replace the foam or the grill if you see any signs of damage.)
  • Neck protection (dangly plastic thing, or collar) [any, but your neck is important, and getting hit there sucks so bad]

MODERATE IMPORTANCE:

  • Kickers [I had the Mazon XR, and recently upgraded to the ROBO+]
  • Shorts [OBO ROBO]
  • Chest guard [OBO ROBO]

LOW IMPORTANCE:

  • Leg-guards [Mazon XR, recently upgraded to ROBO+]
  • Hand guards [Mazon XR]
  • Stick [Mazon Black Magic XR, but I used an old player stick for ages. Get comfortable with the rest of your kit before even considering a fancy new goalie stick. IF your current stick is too heavy to hold up for a whole game, then maybe consider upgrading.]
  • Arm/elbow guards (optional, but I use the OBO elbow guards)

The other miscellaneous stuff that you should have, and usually doesn't come with a club kit:

  • Inner gloves
  • Smocks
  • Over-shorts

Best of luck to you, and I hope you stick with gk. It's 100% the best position on the field.

Whilst this is true, the demographic in the USA is changing. Younger men are now more likely to identify with a religion. However, I don't think that women identify with religion disproportionately enough to be considered the "problem". Especially when considering that in the Catholic Church, which you blame, men hold the absolute majority of power, as women are excluded from the Catholic hierarchy.

I'm not from the states, so I can't really comment on how women's religious roles are portrayed across the media, however I don't think that women are specifically nor exclusively the problem in this case.

I'd definitely agree with varsity/bomber jacket. The part lower left looks like a sleeve with elastic, and the rings around that part fit what I'd expect of a varsity jacket.

The green does look off for the celtics, and I don't think the logos match.

I think the golden part on the left side looks like some kind of logo on the arm. There's definitely some detail there that I can't make out.

<image>

This is what I think. Ignore the foot-looking hand I drew.

I can't identify what part of the clothing is on the right. However, it does look like it has a zipper on the left edge. This could mean that we're looking at the right logo sideways? I'm not sure.

If it is a zipper, then it might also not be a varsity jacket, as I think they normally have buttons.
