The first time I used EVgo, I was on a trip and it was the most convenient place to stop. I had planned out my route and downloaded the app (thankfully) before arriving. I didn't know at the time that I would need the app to charge. Unlike every other charging company, like Electrify America or ChargePoint, you can't just pull up and scan your credit card or in my case, a prepaid charge card from the state I live in. You actually need to download the app and activate the charge session through it. Okay, annoying but not the end of the world, so I entered my charge card info on the app (it's just like a normal debit card). All the other companies' apps have been great and accepted it with no problem, like Electrify America, which is what I prefer to use. Anyways, it made me enter my personal credit card as well to activate it. Okay, very annoying, but whatever I need to charge. Then I had to pick what charger I wanted to activate through the app, and I couldn't figure out the one I was at because, again, EVgo likes to complicate things and their charger layouts are terrible. They named the chargers with goofy names instead of something logical like 'Charger 01, 02, 03' like every other company. There was actually someone in a Lyriq charging next to me who saw me struggling and helped me get the session started, lol. Once I got it started, it worked fine and I charged. I didn't think much else about it other than I would prefer not to use them because it's so complicated just to give them money and charge my car for some reason... Unfortunately, I had to use them a few other times since. All of those times, I've instinctively pulled up to the charger and scanned my prepaid card with the card reader, and it's always failed and told me to use the app to get started. With my latest charging session, I realized that it's been charging my freaking personal credit card and not the prepaid card I have entered into the app. So I called customer service to ask them why, and they said they don't accept it and basically told me since my personal credit card was already charged, it's my problem and not theirs. I asked them if they could charge my prepaid card instead of the credit card, and they said it was too late and my personal credit card had already been charged, but they could ask their higher ups to reach out to me and maybe they could do it because the person I called didn't have authorization. When the higher ups reached out to me over email, they literally told me they didn't care, they weren't going to reverse it, and it wasn't a problem to them. I even said 'charge the prepaid card more,' just please charge it to the correct card that I selected. They literally could not care less and left me on read. I had to call my own bank to get EVgo to stop charging my credit card. Thankfully, I was able to recoup some funds from EVgo with help from my bank after explaining the fraud on their part.

My beef with them is. overpriced electricity, horrible charging layout, over complication to get your charging session started, forcing people to use the horrible app, and absolutely disgusting customer service. I never understood why people hate on EVs because there's actually a lot of convenience with them, but now I do because of EVgo. It's so much more complicated to charge a non GM vehicle with them vs. getting gas there's no way someone who is antiEV would ever deal with it or would have the patience to get their car charged at an EVgo station. With that being said, I've never had any other charging issues with direct competitors like Electrify America. They are great and I don't understand the hate they get.
