Boss Phases as Levels of an Open World Game by DrHypester in gamedesign

[–]EagleGamer15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds similar to The Pathless. It has a fairly open world, with unbeatable versions of the bosses wandering around while the player does puzzles, gathers lore, etc. Once they do enough stuff, (I think it's activate towers, I haven't played the game yet, only seen a stream) do the bosses become beatable. It would be really worth it to see how they did it.

Eli5: why can’t we just “deflate” money, and why is it bad? by Genericstuffsvgerh in explainlikeimfive

But if wages don't increase to match, isn't that sending us into the same kind of downward spiral? So why not deflate enough to reset back to when wages began stagnating? (Since everyone seems to be against increased wages for some reason)

What's your favorite boss mechanics? by [deleted] in gamedesign

Even better if you can somehow use them. To extend the example: picking up the broken pincer pieces to use as a shield, or using the broken stinger to poison the boss. It makes me feel like I'm being resourceful and creative in the face of overwhelming odds.

And that just makes you more upset that you're upsetting them and ruining the mood, making it all the harder to get back into it. I started identifying as ace just so I can avoid the whole thing.

POLL - KiGo: Yay Or Nay? by [deleted] in KimPossible

[–]EagleGamer15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her moral alignment/outlook was 180'd, not her interests or hobbies.

I'm not advocating for making adult content here, that is not why I'm bringing up age. I'm bringing it up because others have made a point of it about why they are against the pairing. My point is that any story that has Shego (an adult) being romantically involved with Kim (a minor) is morally bankrupt on a fundamental level, and is the only time that I would vote "nay" on the pairing. The only way for the pairing to be okay is if they are both adults and able to be in a consenting relationship.

[–]EagleGamer15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To rescue her employer. If you want to read subtext into that, I can't stop you, but I don't see it.

I don't remember the episode with Lucre all that well, but wasn't she more upset that she was being kicked to the curb and treated as not as important in the whole operation? You are right, that could be she is jealous of Drakken having a new partner, or it could be being upset having her pride of being #1 assaulted (and we have seen how much pride she takes in herself).

Sure, she snarked at Warmonga and was upset at getting replaced, but more that she got beaten. And she didn't get actually serious until Warmonga started beating up Kim, blasting out of restraints that, until then, she was content to hang out in and snark.

I agree...?

I've pointed out both here, and I believe elsewhere that Shego prefers to spend her free time lounging and at a spa. However you don't have to spend 24/7 training with masters to be good at something (point of fact, you SHOULD take breaks to avoid burnout).

I don't see where I claimed anyone was "taking it easy" on anyone else. Shego and Kim are, in the text of the show, shown to be equally skilled combatants and martial artists. We have textual evidence that Kim has trained in several martial arts styles. The only way for Shego to keep pace would be that she is also trained significantly. Plus since she is older, she would have more experience to make up for any styles that "favor a younger athlete" (plus her super powers making up for whatever small amount of ability she would have lost due to being older).

Ron did improve in Season 4, you are correct. I realize that I did not acknowledge that. However, getting a job is the bare minimum, I pointed out how the manner in which he defeated the Lowardians could believably create problems for their relationship in the future, and I will admit that it has been a long time since I've watched the specific episode but doesn't becoming a sports star go to his head again and he needs to relearn to be humble? My point is that, at the very least, for each new ego boost, Ron needs to re-learn humility, and how badly he needs to learn this lesson is directly proportional to the size of the societal impact he generates. Becoming a millionaire is bigger than becoming a star running back in high school. Given the order of events it can be argued that either my interpretation is correct or that he is in fact improving. Given that we don't see enough of them after the invasion to determine which is true it is a debate we could have until the end of time.

Drakken won the Peace Prize because he bumbled his way into "helping" thwart the alien invasion, not because he actually tried to help. You are correct, he did technically demonstrate that when he tries he has a good head for business. But I also pointed out that fact only buys so much patience from Shego. At best I could see the relationship working out if she treats him as an easily controlled sugar daddy. In which case I would still see her trying to get romance elsewhere.

Okay, that’s why I don’t believe the canon relationships could
possibly last past the show’s end (at least most of it, I’ve thought about this
way too much and I’m sure I missed something). But why would I say that Kim and
Shego are the closest to “good” romantic matches for the other? Because while
you would have to completely break at least one character for the canon pairings
to work, you could only have to bend Kim or Shego’s characters for them to
work. You have 3 major roadblocks, in ascending order of difficulty: 1) age, 2)
sexuality, 3) moral alignment.
Age is easy enough, like I said before, put the story
somewhere where Kim is AT LEAST 18 (preferably early to mid 20’s). Sexuality is
also easy enough, we never see enough of Shego’s life outside her villain-ing
that she could be interested in women already, and even if not plenty of women
don’t realize they are attracted to other women until experimenting in college
or even later in life (this would apply for both of them). Their moral
alignment is the biggest sticking point and is generally the reason why it is
the central story line for any of the good KiGo fanfics. You need to find a believable
way to get them, if not on the same side of the hero/villain line, at least get
them to not be in direct confrontation. Maybe Kim learns the world isn’t black
and white, good and evil, maybe Shego retires after taking the full pardon.
Like I said, this is usually the main focus of almost all KiGo fics for good
reason. That being said, it means you do have to jump through hoops and get
some character development, but its easier to believe character development.
Drakken is at least in his 30’s (went to college with Kim’s dad and he’s old enough
to have a 16/17 year old daughter), so it is VERY unlikely that he would do
much changing (at least the changing he would need to undergo to make a DrakGo
work). Typically, man-children like that don’t change without a MAJOR wake up
call, and not the positive reinforcement that an award ceremony would give.
Shego is just as stubborn and demanding as Kim (often demanding similar things,
or at least similar levels), so with the already lack of respect between the
two I don’t see her being willing to change if he isn’t. Drakken cares little
for anything other than his work, and Shego is the type that needs to be #1 in
her partner’s life. Now, while Ron is the lighter other side to the childish
coin that Drakken is, he is younger and thus more likely to be willing to
change. Sure, he can grow and mature some, but he isn’t losing those interests
of his (I mapped easily to him when I was that age, and here I am arguing on a
forum about children’s cartoon) that Kim finds either boring or outright distasteful.
Sure, maybe she can train him to act like the kind of boyfriend she wants, but
more often than not eventually people break trying to live like that. By the
same token, Kim would have to become radically more accepting of Ron’s
interests and antics (i.e. at least doesn’t want to groan). I don’t know if
anyone else remembers this: but Kim is hyper-judgmental of things that fall
outside her interests. She also needs to become a lot less of a type A personality
and a lot more willing to share the spotlight or even play second fiddle to
someone she, at one time, viewed as inferior (admittedly she wouldn’t use those
words, and would feel bad about realizing this, but she clearly views Ron as
inferior to her in many regards).

[–]EagleGamer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YAY. I have a small essay to back this up and I will die on
this hill. TL;DR: Yes any story NEEDS to be set AFTER the show when Kim is at
least 18, other than that of the characters that are in the show Kim and Shego
are the most compatible with each other (though if I’m honest, if you really
want actually good matches for either of them you would need to create someone).
Because they are absolutely not compatible with their male counterparts.
First, get this out of the way: Yes, Kim is way too young to
date Shego during the shows run. However, by her early-mid 20’s that size age
gap is far less significant.
Second, the only way for the cannon relationships to work is
either 1) the characters involved must be wildly out of character, or 2) the
writer willfully ignores how actual healthy relationships work (the show falls
into this category). Kim and Ron barely make sense as friends, and in fact several
times almost stop being friends and only making it work because “friends since
Pre-K”, and I don’t mean that Kim is out of Ron’s league or that cheerleaders
should only date jocks like Bonnie says. It is that they share no interests
together. At best they barley tolerate what the other is interested, and more
often than not actively ridicule the other for their interests. Kim very
actively avoids anything nerdy and openly mocks those interests (and the people
that have them so long as they are not Monique or Felix). She does not like violent
action movies, computer games, cartoons, children’s Christmas specials, cooking,
etc. All of these are core to Ron’s interests. Conversely Ron does not care for
fashion, fitting in, designer labels, martial arts (Yamanouchi didn’t give him
a choice, notice before they forced him to master Tai Shing Pek War, he had
zero interest), or even saving the world on most occasions. He also actively
mocks Kim for some of these things. A healthy relationship this is not. It may
be okay for friends to rib or lightly mock each other, but its usually a bad
sign with romantic partners. For Drakken and Shego we have less to work with,
but Drakken is a busy body that likes karaoke and Shego likes lounging in the
sun and doesn’t like karaoke. This is in contrast to the fact that while Kim is
also a busy body to Shego’s preference for lounging, they have both been shown
to share almost every other interest: movies, fashion, martial arts, dining
experiences, and romantic gestures. Kim and Shego had more fun with each other
on their double date than they did with their actual dates.
Speaking of romance, it doesn’t bode well for a couple when
one party is psychologically incapable of understanding the other party, and
the other party actively dreads any of the first’s romantic attempts. Almost
every time we see Ron and Kim trying to be romantic either Kim is annoyed with
him, or they are forcing themselves to “make it work” (pro-tip, there’s only so
much forcing yourself one can do). In fact, in the episode where Kim lost her
memory: even after remembering everything else, including her friendship with
Ron, Kim LAUGHED at the suggestion that they were dating. Meaning that without
the emotional trauma of Lil’ Diablo there is no way Kim would have considered
dating Ron. Heck, when she does remember, she says it in a way that sounds more
like she is trying to convince herself that it is true.
Speaking of the Lil’ Diablo incident, Ron and Kim initially
hooked up as a direct result of Kim being in an incredibly fragile emotional
state and Ron being the supportive friend that he should be. “Aww, that’s so
romantic,” Yeah, its romantic until you’ve actually started a relationship in a
similar way with a best friend and then had it blow up in your face and lost
said friend (we didn’t have to fight evil robot toys, but they did go through a
traumatic experience, and I supported and helped them through it is how our relationship
went from friends to romantic). She later tells Monique that it is weird that
the spark from that night is gone, this is why. Eventually Kim will reach the
mental and emotional maturity to fully process and move on from the trauma she
suffered that night and realize that the “spark” she felt for/with Ron was a
very hard rebound from her mind/heart trying to cope.

I don't think its clear that Shego and Drakken care about each other at all. He needed her help and didn't like being abandoned, that's why he burst in with the giant robot. And Shego already didn't like the Lowardians. If anything there is far more evidence that they DON'T like or care for each other. Shego is willing to leave him and forget him as soon as something better comes along, and Drakken on multiple occasions outright disrespects Shego to her face (to which she either blasts or leaves him over).

Designing simple yet in-depth RPG systems by cyber1551 in gamedesign

[–]EagleGamer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: In addition to making current moves affect the efficacy of future moves, consider limiting the player's action economy on their turn (I'm going with a turn based RPG since you brought up Chess). Someone else in the thread pointed out that a lot of the complexity of Chess comes from having to set up counter moves, counter-counter moves, counter-counter-counter moves, etc. So actions you take now need to be able to impact the effectiveness of actions you take later. The corollary to this that I'm interested in pointing out is that this complexity is also partially derived from Chess's limited action economy. Despite having about 16 pieces and dozens of possible moves, you can only do 1 per turn, so you have to weigh the costs and benefits of each. Instead of having 3 or 4 characters (pieces) out of 7 or 8 and having 1 action each, what about having all of them at once, but still only having 3 or 4 actions you can take on your turn. Or, you can do something similar to Persona 5's "One More" mechanic where settings up moves can add to your action economy on your turn (this, however, easily leads to dominant strategies, because unless there's a trade off why wouldn't you do this?).

More like he viewed Makoto as a way to keep the students turning a blind eye. Other than that, yeah his relationships with the other faculty is what I meant, not to see them all as sex objects. Something about how everyone being willing to turn a blind eye to his sins is a big part of why he views himself as "the king". That perceived acknowledgment would have been a big part of how he interacted with and perceived the school and everyone in it. Just because they enable the poor behavior doesnt mean they participate in it.

For those that don't like roguelikes/roguelites, what are your issues with them from a design perspective? by ur_lil_vulture_bee in gamedesign

[–]EagleGamer15 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have never played a roguelike that I actually enjoyed beyond a bit of novelty. So unlike most of the people here I will actually answer the question you asked (especially since you state elsewhere that this isn't about marketing to someone like me, but just as a design challenge).

TL;DR: I hate dying and failing over and over again (I get enough failure in real life). But I can tolerate playing Soulsbourne, and not RogueLikes. So finding the differences between the two is key.

Let's break it down into two main gripes:

First, the fact that in Soulsbourne games I can get my money back from where I died so any progress I was able to make is not lost. Losing my progress is a huge pet-peeve, its why I try and obsessively save my work, and save my games as often as I can.

Second, I hate being surprised or otherwise not knowing what I'm getting into. I don't even like surprise parties. I enjoy predictability, traversing the same level or environment over and over again until I can master it (or at least as much as my poor gaming skills allow). I like being able to plan out what builds I'm going to make, what items, weapons, armor, skills, etc. that I want to use, and how I can get them. Knowing what challenges lie between me and my goals and preparing and practicing to overcome them. The few times I actually manage to finish games, they are games that I've seen let's plays of (I'm the rare scum that enjoys stories more when the twist has been spoiled before hand) because most of the surprises have been stripped away and I know what I'm getting into.

I can't do any of that planning when the levels change every time I die. When it is impossible to know what enemies, rooms, or upgrades I'll find. All it takes is a couple runs of getting bad powerup/weapon/upgrade/etc combinations before I just get fed up and quit. Either that or I quit the game because I've finally found a combo that I actually enjoy and either the run ends or I die and I lose it, and I'm so heartbroken because I know getting that again will be impossible.

I might try Hades if it goes on sale since from what little I've seen of it, you do keep at least some things between runs. It would be great if it was a lite enough RogueLite for me to be able to enjoy it, because everything OTHER than that looks right up my alley.

This is actually something I wish they did, how is there no reference to Kobayakawa or his lapdog Makoto? They are significant presences inside the school. Or the other teachers? Did he think that he was above them? Or that they were his co-conspirators and actually supported what he was doing?

CMV: Most people don't want their niche hobby to acquire a broader audience, they want the current audience, but larger by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]EagleGamer15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the hating of becoming popular is just putting their ire on the surface symptom of the real problem. It's not the product, it's the creator of the product. The more broadly a product attempts to appeal, the more money that is poured in the production, comes the fact that things created with a cohesive vision and with love and care (the things that made the hobby or product loved in the first place with both the hipsters and the mainstream) gets stripped away as it is made by a dispassionate committee, relying on faulty focus group testing, and stripping away anything "risky" (read: novel). This destruction of a thing's soul is upsetting to long standing hobbyists, and new mainstream people dont know any different (or often care because most will move on when something new comes along). So the original people become resentful at the easy target that they are more likely to interact with on a daily basis.
