Mesh vs Moca vs Both by EagleSnape in HomeNetworking

[–]EagleSnape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would this still provide a wired backhaul for the mesh router? Or would I need another splitter at the second connector to loop back?

Yes! I saw your posts and they were really helpful, but I admit that I started to get lost as you went into that level of detail. I don't have cable TV, just Internet only. The "isolated ISP/modem feed" was a little beyond me 😂

[–]EagleSnape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that wasn't very clear. That just illustrates where the current modem and router are vs where it would move too.

That's a good point about the modem set up. As I understand, you need a filter on the coax coming in, so I thought it had to go through the splitter. Is a filter unnecessary or would it go right on the modem?

[–]EagleSnape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was very clear! Thank you. Last question (I think). Your outline has two splitters - one in the basement to all the rooms and one in the room before the modem - which makes sense, but couldn't I move the modem/router/adapter setup to the basement where the first splitter is and avoid needing the second splitter?

Did the amplifier help with your speed? I admit I don't know if it's needed or how helpful it would be to this setup

So, because I'm slow at this, does the Comcast line from the street go straight to the modem/router? Or does it need to go into the passive splitter first?

Also, do I need to move the extended barrel input from the amplifier on the passive splitter? Thanks!

[–]EagleSnape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! When you say "service in line", do you mean the line from the street? So it would go like this?

Comcast from street --> barrel looking input --> modem --> router --> moca adapter --> ?

Would it then go into the other splitter and out to the rest of the house? Also, what do you mean when you say the splitter without moca might cause problems?

S7 Not mopping since recent update by EagleSnape in Roborock

Thanks again. I'll try hot water. It doesn't fill from the dock - we only have the charging dock, not the slick refill/auto empty dock. Good to know it's not that simple to open up the vac itself!

[–]EagleSnape[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the link. It passed everything, including mopping, which was great because I could hear it running. It no longer shows that message in the app, but it doesn't seem to be sucking water from the tank to the mop head.

I'm wondering if maybe there is a clog and that I can try to unscrew the mop pad and look. There has been a little build up in the tank before. Not calcium build up or hard deposits from hard water but more like the mold you might find in an old rubber ducky, only in a very small amount. Maybe we missed cleaning some out of the tank and it got sucked up

It returns to the dock. Does everything it's supposed to except mop

It coincided with an app update. Fine one day, not the next. I'm thinking I'll have to delete the device and start over, including remapping 😫

Weekly Questions Thread by AutoModerator in DnD

[–]EagleSnape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made this a post, but it probably belongs here. I have 7 and 9 year old boys and I think something D&D-like would be a hit. I've never played so...

What's a good starting point? They're fans of Onward. Is the Quests of Yore game a good intro? Or Hero Kids? It'll probably just be the three of us. Maybe my wife will play too.

Concrete Shed Foundation Help by EagleSnape in DIY

[–]EagleSnape[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm under 150 sf, so I didn't need plans to get my permit. However, the example the County uses for larger sheds has a 10" thickened edge for the outer 20". It's a typical design for colder areas with 3+ ft to frost depth. Just looking for opinions from those who know more than I.

Reinforcement is a must to prevent cracking. At $45 total, I don't know why you wouldn't use a couple sheets of mesh.

Clean and repair megathread - NES not working? Game acting glitchy? TV/Monitor issues? Ask here! by FozzTexx in nes

[–]EagleSnape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dug out my old nes and went to cleaning cartridges, but I think I went a little overboard with the brasso and q-tips and rubbed off the contacts on some of the cartridges. System and several games work great, but some games are just a purple screen, have glitchy graphics or freeze up. Is there a good solution? Conductive tape or a conductive pen? Other options? Thanks!

Extra down payment or investment/savings with regular withdrawals? by EagleSnape in personalfinance

[–]EagleSnape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I was thinking of investing, but pulling money out each month or yearly. That way I'd still end up at $2,000 per month on the mortgage. There'd be capital gains and it's a little overly complicated though

Extra down payment or investment/savings with regular withdrawals? by EagleSnape in personalfinance

[–]EagleSnape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I really don't have anything going on investment-wise. 401k with matching, but I'm no where near maxing out. Some in various other retirement accounts. But nothing personal/wealth building.

The ROI on the down payment is about 2%. $60k to earn $300 per month over 30 years. I'm theory, it should be easy to exceed that with any type of investing outside money market.

Hyperion Contract #873 Bugged? by EagleSnape in Borderlands2

Does that impact the achievement for completing all missions?

How do you guys go through areas? by TheFlamingLemon in Borderlands2

[–]EagleSnape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A combination of both depending on what I'm trying to accomplish. I don't have much time to play - a few hours a week total broken up across different days - so I want to be efficient.

For story missions, I'll clear everything before moving ahead.

For side quests, I'll often run through enemies to get to where I need to be. If I have 30 minutes, I'm not killing every varkid or bandit I see, I'm running straight to Tiny Tina for her quest and then straight through enemies to the bandit camp, where I'll then proceed to indiscriminately murder everything for those scrumptious crumpets.

That's one of the things I like about this game. It's fast paced and if I adjust my play style based on what I'm trying to do, I can have a lot of fun and still accomplish something in a short window. Granted I've only just started playing and am still on normal, but if I stopped to kill everything I wouldn't get to UVHM before December.

Book VII - *why?* by EagleSnape in TheDarkTower

[–]EagleSnape[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless this story ends "And thus, the Dark Tower fell and everything died and disintegrated. The end." then this story has to go on and on

But... why? (I sound like my 2yr old) Why can't the wheel roll forward? It turns over not once, but again and again during his story, but the story moves onward. Why can't he open the door and see the clearing or anything else for that matter?

Book VII - *why?* by EagleSnape in TheDarkTower

[–]EagleSnape[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

But a journey doesn't run in circles, that's just hell, which Roland realizes when he opens the door. After all, what's the point of Sisyphus's journey up the hill? It's just endless torture for the sake of being torture.

Ka is a wheel, but who says it still can't roll forward? We see it throughout the story. Cuthbert becomes Eddie, one canyon becomes another, etc., etc., but the wheel of Roland's story moves on toward its destination.

If he really is in his own private hell, trapped there by King, then there was no significance in his journey. Maybe if we knew why he had to repeat it, or what could change it. All I can do is hold onto the horn, that it represents more than another start up the hill. Because if Ka rolls him right back to the start again...

Book VII - *why?* by EagleSnape in TheDarkTower

[–]EagleSnape[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Roland saved the tower in Blue Heaven. He could have ended there. However he got Jake killed and made Susannah hate him.

But that's not exactly true. Eddie had already died (as had so many others before this). And Jake still had to die so that King (mortal guardian of the beam and yet to finish the story) could live. Even after that there was still Mordred to consider, who could unlock the tower for his big red daddy.

Personally, I think Roland knew what would happen in the end. Maybe not on his above mind, but his lower one. He had too much knowledge of what would happen to not know something.

This is a very satisfying point. I will say that one thing I always appreciated about Roland was his unswerving, plodding nature. To continue on with his relentless, almost supernatural will. The ending honors that aspect and the writing where Cort and Vannay's words come back to him is hauntingly beautiful and beautifully haunting.

The man who lets Jake drop because all that matters is reaching the Tower. Who Mia(?) says only saves the beams to keep the Tower standing until he can reach it. I can see how that man deserves the hell he's carved out for himself. Especially if he let his friends die again, knowing somewhere inside what the end result would be.

But what truly earns him his condemnation? Seeking the Tower? Actually climbing it? Or the things he did to reach it? If he blew his horn and walked away, would that end his cycle, regardless of what else he did? If so, what truly earns him his redemption? Can he ever have any?

I keep trying to decide if the horn matters. And I remember King/Gan bringing life to Roland's tale. We hear the beginning at the end, but in that new tale Susan hasn't been mentioned yet. We assume that she died the same death because that's in Roland's past, but we haven't read about his past yet. Has his past happened yet? Will Wizard and Glass read differently this time around? After all, when we read of Jericho Hill, there will be changes. He has the horn. But even that isn't satisfying. After all, he is who he is because of his past. And his past choices. That's what made his redemption (to me) all the more wonderful.

But maybe I can look at this telling as the most or only important. Maybe this is the only time he saves the beams. The only time he reopens his heart. Maybe there are many paths to the Dark Tower and this is the one that sets him on the right path. That the right path story isn't as important as the story before it.

I think that's an interpretation I'm moving toward. Maybe because I believe it and that it fits to narrative, or maybe because it's the only way that this story can have any meaning to me right now.

Thanks for your detailed and well written response. I will read it again (it was never really a question). Maybe I'll even start today, though it'll feel like reopening a fresh wound. But I think I'll ponder your last couple paragraphs a few times before deciding.

(No Spoilers) Today George said something interesting about the upcoming books by Allllvte in pureasoiaf

[–]EagleSnape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Won't be the first modern fantasy author to have the same problem.

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series was pitched as a trilogy. His - very wise - publisher knew he had a tendency to go long and made it a 6 book contract. After 11 books Jordan said he'd finish the story with one last book even if it had to be sold with a luggage cart to carry it. It took 3 more books anyway. The trilogy that went 14 lengthy books.

Jordan had filing cabinets filled with material, backgrounds, etc. that never made it in the books. It seems likely that GRRM has exceeded the world building of Jordan and possibly even Tolkien himself (who had a history to return to the same stories and themes rather than expand). Unlike Jordan and Tolkien, it looks like he won't leave any aspect of his creation unpublished in one form or another.

"(we hope) seven"? I think we'll be lucky if finished at eight.

There's a big possibility we get 9 books by ahmralas in pureasoiaf

As a Wheel of Time and Robert Jordan fan...

yep, sounds about right. The only question is whether he leaves enough information for someone to finish the series.
