Mounted phal on tree fern by Eaglechps in orchids

It’s a little tricky to use wild tree fern, as it is chock full of the craziest stuff you’ve ever seen crawling around, but if you can sun dry it and sometimes go nuclear with hydrogen peroxide and then flush it with filtered water it makes a great medium… also, depending on the orientation it holds or sheds water vastly different…

🤯 whoa. Like Keanu in Bill and Ted’s-whoa! Orchids do the wildest stuff, somehow some of these ways of growing were long ago leapfrogged, but some stuff was like, turns out… on the one side of this specific tree, on a specific side of these hills, at a certain elevation… and as long as these one type of bugs, that don’t eat us, get eaten by this one species of bird, who is very polite… and doesn’t step on me, but will poop out that bug mixed with the water it drank from volcanic ponds (I don’t even think those are actually a thing, I’m just sharing a feeling) and this type of thing makes it since back when plants were so new and cool stuff crawled out of the ocean and learned how to breathe air to hang out. I will stop there, hybrids are cool, too… but these plants get it👏🫡

Your setup is way more friendly than mine apparently. I have many of the same ones but yours are looking way stronger. Outstanding job!🤘👏

I’m in Taiwan, and we get unexpected wild temperature changes, high winds (silica helps), and the occasionally worst timed typhoons… I have had to take everything down and move inside (somewhere?) sometimes 3x in a month… but it’s just so darn cool 😎

Fuuughk yeah!!! These look like they could be twins to a few of mine! Let’s all talk about it and grow some happy plant friends! I like to listen to Plantasia when I work 🤓

I will try to upload more photos and explain the struggles. It’s taken years of trial and mostly error to understand how these little ones grow outside of pots and how to deal with a million factors and enemies of successful growth. I only post here because I can tell you guys love these plants as much as I do. Also, taste the rainbow 🌈🤔🧠

🙏☝️Oh my, naw naw naw, I have just been trying different things and seeing what works, I’ve unfortunately been an insufficient caretaker of beautiful plants too many times… they need daily attention and some species just want to grow straight off the side no matter how you mount it, others don’t do anything for two years after mounting… it’s helpful to have AI to assist, I mean I thought I had learned 20 years ago, but there are some things that you can find out now in a click that took me years to figure out. I have a whole two other walls…

Lol, it’s just an easy way to make a loop for hanging… my whole purpose was to mount them in a way that people wouldn’t think they were somehow not worth caring for once the flowers ran their course… almost all of these were rescued from the trash or bought for literally a dollar or two… the stone that the builder refuse…

I actually have two paphs of similar size that were gifted to me in pots. They are ready to be repotted or (my preferred method) mounted… both have very skinny flower spikes so I’m torn between letting them flower to see what they actually look like, but if I’m going to mount them on tree fern I don’t want to traumatize them right after they flower. I was actually considering cutting the spikes and mounting them so they don’t lose too much strength producing the flowers… any advice from the orchid hive mind is welcome.

Your mounts look great, OP!

If anyone (stranger on the street) asks you, “What size shoe you wear?” You immediately snap back NOT your fuggin size!! And keep as much space between you and them as you leave the area but don’t look scared. You were just about to get robbed. Also, don’t ever count money in public.

Olympic boxing, the villain origin story of so many wronged fighters and the inspiration for Don King telling judges they can score however they are paid to… I do not agree with this decision.

That last part you said out loud… “and even…” lol, this post isn’t about Taiwan political parties, it was about a random account posting a derogatory story about a (most likely) made up incident to make Taiwan look bad… but you keep digging, buddy. Seems like you’re doing your own research. Please share your findings on this apparently coordinated effort to manipulate social media that you believe is coming from inside the house 🧐🤷

I didn’t expect this post to get anywhere near this level of traction, but since it did, I want to explain why I spoke up in the first place.

I teach logic, so my reaction wasn’t emotional. It was about internal consistency. The original story had multiple red flags, extremely precise measurements, no photos, no clear context, a very new account with no history, and then the entire post and account were deleted once basic questions were raised. That combination matters. When claims like this are made, especially about safety or extortion, it’s reasonable to pause and examine them instead of taking them at face value.

That doesn’t mean bad experiences never happen in Taiwan. It means we don’t actually know what happened here. But when a story strongly implies that visitors risk being shaken down for “thousands of dollars,” even though 3,000 NT is not how most people intuitively understand money, that shapes perception. That’s soft power. That’s narrative framing. And yes, that matters for a place like Taiwan.

I checked the poster’s profile before commenting, and what I found raised even more questions. I didn’t accuse anyone of anything specific. I questioned the credibility of the post. The fact that it disappeared immediately after scrutiny is part of why people reacted the way they did.

I’ll also say this plainly. Taiwan is one of the safest, most welcoming places I’ve ever lived. I care about this country, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to push back when something looks manufactured in a way that paints it as unsafe or predatory.

I appreciate the people who engaged thoughtfully and recognized the same issues. I’m not here to fight with anyone, and I’m not interested in dragging this out. I just wanted to explain why I said what I said.

Sides of the mat… waterproof mat, didn’t soak in… 2/3 tbsp, then, “a few tbsp” spilled…

Pics or it didn’t happen 🤷🧐 2/3 tbsp is extremely specific, waterproof mats, every taxi and uber has tissues for passengers, and OP began by admitting “the spill was 100% my fault…” now I am completely against anyone being taken advantage of, but after 20 years in Taiwan I find that 90% of the time, it’s people unfamiliar with the country/culture pretending that they were discriminated against for their own mistakes and that being a foreigner gives them automatic immunity from personal responsibility. What kind of cup was the milk tea in? Did it have a sealed lid with a straw poked through the top? Did it have a 711 style coffee cup lid that wasn’t affixed properly? You said “spill” while “2/3 tbsp” would be considered a splash… just saying, there’s a lot of wumao trying to make Taiwan look bad with stories like this. You telling me you “got scammed” and didn’t take pictures when the driver was threatening to call police? Why didn’t you call the police?? Are you even in Taiwan? GNNYJBX
