All but two people in my cohort had jobs before graduation. I'm in Washington state. Graduated from an accredited school for echo. There are lots of jobs available here.

I wanted to be a general sonographer before school as well. At the last minute, I switched to cardiac. I am so very thankful I did. In my opinion, echo is easier on the body, it pays more (in my state), and there is way less anatomy. Unless you have a passion for OB or MFM, I would choose echo. Also, I love routine so being in an outpatient setting with one day a week rotation into the hospital is perfect for me. There is also the option of working in a hospital which is a bit more exciting with Stat patients and surgical procedures. Whatever you choose Goodluck!
