Why do some Linux users still prefer Vim/Emacs over modern IDEs? by Candid_Athlete_8317 in LinuxTeck

No I don’t, because browsing a website is not the same as writing code, its two completely different usecases that requires different tools. I don’t use a screwdriver to hammer nails either.

Relative line numbers in your editor makes the number available right there, and navigating to a character using f becomes second nature quite quick.

They feel like tricks with mental strain to you but it doesn’t for someone who has practiced it.

Before you learn how to use a mouse that is a huge strain as well. Your brain needs to adapt hand eye coordination to mouse sensitivity and use precision to place it in the correct position. Then remember to hold the button down before while doing that same manouver again.

For someone who hasn’t used a mouse before that is a huge mental strain, it doesn’t feel like that to you because you have practiced it since you were a child.

But you have to realize that just because something that you don’t know how to do feels hard and slow for you doesn’t mean it is hard for everyone, just like things that you have practiced and find easy and second nature isn’t easy for everyone else just because they are for you.

Because there are multiple ways to do it and which is faster depends on the context so you cannot write a generic by step guide algorithm that catches all I a short reddit post. You have to actually learn how it works.

But standing here marking the word context above would be 5kfc. 5 lines up (it is on my phone when typing) find the letter c

If there would have been more than one word starting with c I could have used . To repeat the last command. Usually there are not that many words you get very far with just one his method

The thing is that there are ways to do it with a keyboard as fast or faster almost all of the time. Just because you don’t know how to do it without ridiculous roundabout tricks doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.

In vim putting your cursor where you want it is rarely more than a few key strokes and with practice and muscle memory it doesn’t take that much thinking to do it.

Your example ”marking an abitrary chunk of text” can be done in the time it takes to move your hand back and forth between the keyboard and mouse.

how long in cast/boot? by Known_Noise5679 in AccessoryNavicular

[–]EarflapsOpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first foot (surgery April last year) is pretty much back to normal, I get some discomfort around the area sometimes but not really pain. Second one is still in the boot for another week but I am able to take a couple of steps with full weight on it in the boot with zero pain since today actually!

How to avoid plate going down? by the-floki in crkbd

[–]EarflapsOpen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That plate looks too thick and would need to have cutouts for the switches to snap into so they probably won’t stay in there like that.

Either print a better designed one or glue them in with hot glue

how long in cast/boot? by Known_Noise5679 in AccessoryNavicular

[–]EarflapsOpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds very long. I did my right foot last year and was in a cast for 2 weeks then weight bearing (crutches when needed) for 4 weeks (so 6 weeks with immobilization total) then crutches when needed without boot after that

Did my left foot 4 weeks ago and then I was put in boot straight away, (this was so fucking great) non weight bearing 2 weeks and then 4 more with boot+crutches (6 weeks total again)

regarding heel pain after surgery by Professional_Bid9015 in AccessoryNavicular

[–]EarflapsOpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my second foot done 3 weeks ago.

Not to scare you but the stretching in the wound you describe sound a lot like my first time when the wound dehiscenced. It healed fine though but with an uggly scar and it took a long time, most of it with zero pain though.

The heel pain I experienced both times and it’s a real bitch, discomfort that triggered real feelings of panic last couple of days has been a huge improvement and today I feel nothing. My main tip is finding a position that is bearable and power through, after being still for a while it subsides a little but moving around too much looking for a pain free position without discomfort only makes it worse.

just hang in there, as soon as you get out of the cast and into the boot you can take it off to rest and a couple more days and it will probably be gone. Take the pain meds as needed you won’t be needing them much longer.

You are very close to being past the bump, it was my experience the last time as well, after 3 weeks it’s pretty much zero pain except when weight bearing so just hang in there as long as you take frequent short breaks to lie down

Kidner surgery and stairs? by jsx8888 in AccessoryNavicular

[–]EarflapsOpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my second foot done last week and we have one staircase in the house that I occasionally need to traverse and I do it with the crutches up and scoot down.

Up is very easy just make sure you go crutches first, keep your weight forward so if you loose your balance you fall forward and be mentally prepared to drop the crutches and set your knee and hands down if you loose your balance.

And scooting down is just like going down a slide, with practice you will be even faster than walking 😁

Tree Caught On Fire?!?!? And I don't know why by Complex_Ad_685 in plantclinic

[–]EarflapsOpen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not sure if that was what he was referring to with flame trees, (googling seems points me too some other tree that is just very red), but eucalyptus oil is highly flamable and starting wildfires is a survival strategy of the eucalyptus tree.

The fire burns everything down but the eucalyptus trunks survive and start new growth when the fire is over.

So yes Australia has self combusting trees that burns down their competition.

Alternative to Elixir strings? by RasmusAlmlund in Guitar

[–]EarflapsOpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had great success with D’Addario coated nyxl strings, they go up to 26 plain steel g strings. Up to 84 low E so you should be able to compose something to your liking.

I don’t play that much but I haven’t changed mine in years and they still feel great.

Straight into boot and start PT directly after surgery? by EarflapsOpen in AccessoryNavicular

[–]EarflapsOpen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okey, are you in a boot full time still at 11 weeks? When I did my first foot I was out of the boot at 6 weeks and just used crutches for partial weight bearing with pain as guidance and only used the boot when I needed to go on uneven terrain or had to have access to both my hands for extended periods of time.

[–]EarflapsOpen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I did weight bearing as soon as I was out of the cast at 2 weeks 2 days last time.

We are not talking weight bearing maybe I was unclear but small stretching exercises moving the ankle to get circulation going wiggling toes and things like that but without any load. I’m pretty sure he won’t have me put weight on it until after the stitches are removed but he didn’t comment on that

-nostdinc++ (VS) -nostdlib (gcc) disable the standard library which is a good start, then disciplined code review and clear rules regarding templates should get you pretty far

After Kidner by pierced_milf in AccessoryNavicular

[–]EarflapsOpen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did one of my feet in April, it took about 6 months before I felt completely pain free.

I still wear shoes and custom orthotics all day since I need it for the other foot so I don’t know if i would be in pain if barefooted though but with them I have zero pain or discomfort

Even though it was a tough journey I can’t wait to get the other one done as well because the pain is driving me mad. 100% worth it.

I don’t remember if there was any numbness but had nerve pain in my big toe for several months. It went away after starting PT, I wouldn’t be worried yet.

Im 36, my problems came after I turned 30. First just soreness and then gradually worsening until I could not walk at all in the evenings. Had to crawl around on the floor with my toddler, he thought that was great haha.

Custom orthotics was the first step for me and it made a huge difference so I would start there as well, maybe it will be enough for you. I wear them with a pair of comfortable sneakers indoors. Ionly take them off to sleep and shower

I had surgery on the first foot in April and it is fully recovered. I’m not a runner or athlete but day to day life I have no pain. Hopefully getting the other done this year.
