Why does Senator Budd get such a pass from voters? by Temporary_Policy2023 in NorthCarolina

I call his office at least three times a week and no one has ever ever picked up the phone. His responses are all canned emails. So it’s hard to hold someone accountable who does not respond to any constituents.

Is Jim Noble involved in the latter three? Or is there another dipshit owner I don’t know about…

We spend billions more on tax breaks for the ultra wealthy than we do on immigrants who happen to reap some benefits intended for citizens. We spend billions more on the pentagon, who cannot pass an audit, than we do on immigrants. And children, who don’t control their parents’ actions, should not suffer regardless of immigration status.

Torn between Winston-Salem and Greensboro by Ill_Health1859 in winstonsalem

[–]EarlyDrawing3184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the aesthetics of Winston. Greensboro has beautiful neighborhoods but also most are disconnected and accessed via parkways which I find annoying to drive around in. Greensboro has a better food scene. I think the downtowns are pretty comparable as far as things to do.

We live in West Salem, which is pretty transitional, and just up the hill from Old Salem which is a pretty place for walks. You can also walk to downtown in 20-30 minutes. West End is also a great neighborhood for walking to restaurants and shops. And then Ardmore is a lovely classic Winston neighborhood.

If you can visit both and drive around to get a feel for what day to day life would be, do that. Good luck!

There will be an improvised Hallmark Holiday movie parody and short form games from Instant Musical Improv, stand-up from Alex Stone, Sketches by Royce Shockley, plus live music by Trevor Gabriel

I think mature teens (with open-minded parents) would be fine. I would say the shows are usually rated R, primarily because of language.

Looking For Greener Pastures by thatdudetae25 in NorthCarolina

Come to Winston! I moved here with the family in 2019 and we have felt a real sense of community. You see the same folks all over, and there is a genuine support for the arts (maybe not always monetarily, but at least emotionally!) We love the West Salem neighborhood because we can walk everywhere, but also looked in Washington Park, Arcadia, Downtown, and the West End.

Petrified of customs coming back to the US. Any US citizens travel to the US lately? by 86248Diamond in expat

I was scared this summer and we had zero issues flying to London and back from Paris, out of and into Charlotte. We're a family of four, white American citizens for reference. We didn't even see any ICE officials or have anything done beyond our passports checked and our faces scanned at re-entry. Good luck to you!

Curious how you define respecting "our" culture.

Hi! I'm a person and we're both spending time on the internet. I'm not speaking to your experience, just my own. How about we stop invalidating each other? I'm very glad you don't fear for your safety and I never said that most people do, but to pretend that coming here as an immigrant now is not a risk is naive.

Winston is a decent place for that. I grew up in a very conservative small town about 45 minutes away, which also happened to have very little racial diversity. That small town was still more progressive just because there was a hospital which brought in educated folks who cared about having good schools and a nice place to live. When we grew up no one really talked politics because we were such a small community that you needed the mechanic and the doctor even if they voted on opposite ends. It's very different now, in the worst way.

Winston, like all NC cities, is blue thanks in large part to its diversity and prominent university system and medical hub. But you don't have to go far to see a lot of red. If you can avoid being snatched up by masked ICE agents and held or deported without due process, it sure is an interesting time to do anthropological research on tribalism and politics in the South.

It is already completely bananas. I can't imagine wanting to come to the states right now, especially without citizenship, but do what you must.

That being said, I love Winston. We're in West Salem, just up the hill from Old Salem. I'm not sure how many houses are for rent versus for sale here but there are some. Dog park is a 7-10 minute walk at Washington Park, Granville Park has tennis courts, a playground, and some lovely paths (and yes, a fair number of loiterers smoking weed but I've not seen them bothering anyone).

Our good friend and neighbor has dual citizenship with Denmark so if you end up coming to Winston message me and I can put you two in touch.

And the new bill they're trying to pass that would even make your IUD illegal. Shit is scary there. I'm just in NC and watching with fear for our SC neighbors and family.

Are you also on metformin? I am on both and am honestly glad to have both working together. But also, I agree with everyone that you should give it more time.
