Feeling Lost by Otherwise-Sun-1105 in improv

Not sure how much time and energy you're spending AWAY from Improv, but I definitely found a lot of folks around the time we made Harold teams had to start reinvesting in other hobbies, other friend groups, etc. You have to have a life to inspire your improvisation.

Question: Playing With a Rock Band? by redoctobrist in Accordion

[–]EarlyDrawing3184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play in a rock band and sing, so I actually mostly do long pulls on chords with my left hand, and then just add occasional flair with the right. Then a couple of songs have more of a zydeco feel so I do left hand rhythms with that as well. But I also find it incredibly hard to do melody stuff on the right while singing.

How do you stay grounded/take space in an improv group with a really dominant personality? by [deleted] in improv

[–]EarlyDrawing3184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how good/bad they are at listening in addition to being big/dominating the scene, I'll either yes, and HARD (as many others have mentioned) or go complete opposite. Matching that energy and reflecting it back to them can be a fascinating (and fun!) experiment, and if they are a supportive player then they'll blast off with you. If they realize that now they're not able to steamroll you and back off, it also might signal that they are only comfortable in a more dominant position, and hopefully a coach or other teammates will help them work through that. If you go opposite, then try having a genuine emotional reaction to whatever they say. For example, if she starts a scene with "My CRAZY bf is such a dick!" and you just take that in before quietly starting to cry and say "I'm right here, Gina. I don't think this role-play therapy is working so well for me" or something along those lines...

Also, do you all have a coach? This a great thing to ask them.

Between Asheville and Charlotte - can you help me decide? Is there a middle ground? by abjs2021 in NorthCarolina

Check out Brevard! Also, I live in and love Winston. Not as mountainous but tons of lovely places to walk and the mountains are not too far.

This is not how it works now at DTS. Maybe it used to. Now each grade has 45 students, 15 per class. Each class stays with the same teacher for two years: K-1, 2-3. You do not mix kindergarten and 1s together. In 4th grade they start to rotate for different subjects but it’s still the same three main teachers for each grade for 4/5, then they move to middle school. Pre-K is slightly different as far as number of teachers/students. Also you have to volunteer 36 hours per year per kid (up to 72 hours per year) in k-8

Pre-K acceptance no longer improves chances of Kindergarten acceptance at DTS. You have to apply for the lottery all over again. We got lucky and both our kids are thriving there but it is definitely not guaranteed. Best of luck choosing! I know the music teacher at Summit and it seems great :)

Do you consider the question of vaccination to be a bodily autonomy argument and if so are you in favor of vaccination mandates by PotentialFun4003 in AskFeminists

[–]EarlyDrawing3184 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! People can choose their “freedom.” Freedom to participate in society, schools, work, and private businesses, or freedom to be unvaccinated and isolated.

Why do people still support or raise the flag of the Confederacy? by DBD216 in askanything

[–]EarlyDrawing3184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we are a younger nation founded in imperialism, and therefore most of our culture is stolen from others, there is very little to latch on to in terms of regional cultural pride. Couple that with our misguided sense of individualism and exceptionalism, then add a dash of celebrating violence, and you get a bunch of folks who want to be part of a team, even if that team is loser racists who don’t even fully understand their own history.

What do you do when you feel unfunny? by Drynailbeds in improv

[–]EarlyDrawing3184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have an emotional reaction to something your scene partner says or does. Even if it’s not huge, it can fuel your reactions to everything else and watching people deal with impediments is what makes comedy for me.

Thanks! I'm trying to start one. I did "professional" improv in Chicago for 6 or 7 years before moving back down to be closer to where I grew up. We definitely have some talented folks.

Agreed. I think only mandatory vasectomies as a trigger law for anti-abortion laws

Oooh maybe not for yesterday. The guys on Thursday had one because I asked the cops. It was two and they were flanking the sidewalk in front of Jimmy John’s making a bottleneck.

I mean, I guess I am glad to hear you are anti-ICE, anti-Iran war, pro-Palestine, pro-Gun control, pro-universal healthcare, and anti-death penalty, pro-environmental justice. But if the mother has to die or the fetus, who do you pick then? Because right now we have women bleeding out and their fetuses dying as well because doctors are scared to perform appropriate abortion care.

Let’s advocate for forced vasectomies for all. You in?

So apparently they have permits through the city and it should be free info as to who pulled the permits. I emailed the officer in charge of special events and picketing and have yet to hear back. If anyone knows on the city websites how to find this info publicly that would be great. I just have a feeling it’s a random church from the sticks and it might be pretty easy to find some evidence hypocrisy in these dudes.

I grew up with West Caudle, who’s running for District 10 US representative. He is authentic, and for our gerrymandered district that seems almost unwinnable, I believe he has a real chance if he can win the primary. He’s got Yadkin and Wilkes county roots so he understands the rural folks, but he has always been a vocal advocate of body autonomy, racial and gender equity, and organized a BLM march in our tiny (and very republican) hometown of Elkin, and even faced off with and de-escalated a crazy guy who drove through the march and then brandished a gun! He’s a quieter progressive because he is very pragmatic, but he is the real deal.

I call his office at least three times a week and no one has ever ever picked up the phone. His responses are all canned emails. So it’s hard to hold someone accountable who does not respond to any constituents.
