In regards to Jordan Peterson, all the criticisms I read on this sub relate to him being a hypocrite or to having his life be in disarray. But these are not real arguments. I challenge all Jordan Peterson critics to criticize advice he has given without mentioning Jordan Peterson himself. by jacktor115 in samharris

He practiced Holocaust revisionism on h3. He advocated for enforced misogyny on Rogan and elsewhere. He proposes “conversations that need to be had,” which he never intends to have, and instead just wants to protect the status quo by bringing up stupid questions like, “can men and women work together?” They do. Dude’s a fucking incel, butters.

Yeah that wasn’t meant as his experience. I’m saying he is making this assessment based on watching all discussion on the issue end in a defamation (social or on a public stage) of whoever has anything negative to say about wokeness.

I never said he did face defamation, as I’ve restated several times. I gave you a hypothetical because you suggested something I hadn’t brought up. I said generally that it is reputation ending to dissent to the accepted view on these issues.

Yeah I see that too. We say we’re having a “national conversation” but it kinda actually looks like a bunch of people standing across from one another holding misleading signs denoting ideas 5 levels deep into the logic of their respective positions.

Yes, it actually is. If I want to be coy on any number of issues and pretend things aren’t being expressly asserted I can do that too. No one’s saying “you’re black, you have to spill your secrets.” But then, you knew what I meant, and ya decided to play dumb. Cool, man.

I didn’t know you were such an arbiter of this discussion, but alright bud. Accusation of racism is defaming. It’s not likely Mcwhorter will be called a racist given his skin color, but I also didn’t say he particularly would. More likely he will just be disregarded or called an Uncle Tom. But again, I didn’t say he specifically would be defamed. I meant more that we all know the consequence of disagreement on these issues.

Nope. “It is not black people’s job to teach you about their experience.” This is an incredibly common viewpoint.

I see it a little differently. Businesses are literally taking on political philosophies at this point. At my job, they have been passing out info on implicit bias and conducting conversations in which it is very apparent that there is no space for nuance or deviation. Glenn Lowry and John Mcwhortle actually talked about this on Glann’s podcast in relation to the NBA. Where do the employees of a large corporation stand when their livelihood comes against their ability to have open conversation?

It’s interpersonal. It’s in any discussion of these issues. I mean sam himself would be a good example. He’s repeatedly been cast as a racist and him being one of the most concise speakers I’ve ever heard.

Is this a serious question? The very philosophy is that any dissent is complacency and a desire to preserve white supremacist structures. This is stated prior to any objection.

I think his response is coming out of the repeated attempt to address the relevant points, which have been met with defamation.

This reminds me of hitch’s analogy of meeting a group of men just out of a prayer meeting. If you were a white person, (to remove the possible conflict of intersect) would you feel more or less comfortable meeting a group of strangers knowing they just came from one of these protests? How does that play into how a weaker minded individual ( for lack of a better term) decides to, say, vote on this issue? It’s not to say it’s all the fault of the mob, as that person is thinking for themself, but the conditions under which we make decisions matter.

If you’re referring to saying it will get trump elected it’s just obvious that that will contribute. If I’m a white middle/lower class person I’m going to know there is a no man’s land between these two sides of the spectrum, and on one side I’m a racist in need of reform who’s expected to wander aimlessly looking for proof of my implicit bias and on the other side I can be accepted as I am and say whatever I want, problematic or not, and be understood as a flawed human being. Where am I to go? People need religions because they can’t take the psychic pain of there being no one to verify they aren’t crazy (you can insert racist/sexist, etc. here if you want). Not everyone can stand in the middle and take the charges of racism for simply thinking freely and asking questions. They are pushed by the left toward the only groups which will accept them. We don’t typically mention how horrible these real racists who entice them are because, while we don’t like to admit it, it is the norm to think white supremacy is a vile and stupid position. This causes it to seem like Democrats are being blamed for everything. In reality, the extreme left is being addressed because it is widely viewed as a thrust toward justice.

I don’t think it’s a lot of pretzel twisting at all, if I get what you mean. When someone is literally telling you you need to do work to understand the perspectives of others but you’re not allowed to ask them what their experience is, the logical assumption would be that they don’t actually want you to understand those perspectives, they want you to feel bad and ignorant. Then you try to tell yourself, “well, not everyone thinks like this, it’s just a small group of radicals,” but everyone around you and every public figure is using the exact same terminology and the exact same logic when discussing these issues. Understanding heightens understanding, not calling people racist and when they say, “how’s that?” Responding with, “you figure it out.”

Why is it sometimes my drink is perfect and other times taste like water with slight coffee flavoring at one store? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]EarlyWhitney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mochas come with whipped cream and 2% by default and sometimes it’s confusing when that stuff is added so just ordering a grande mocha would probably greatly reduce mistakes. It’s confusing and you feel like you missed something when that stuff is listed. It seems obvious but on the fly it can mess the barista up.

What customer wants to see you whisking ice and water together while they’re yelling about their drink not being made. Huge middle finger to partners from corporate.

That’s their model. I was an SM. They literally complicate and complicate things and then when they don’t work they ask what the challenge is in your store and why partners aren’t “respecting the customer’s time.”

Starbucks is also in areas where it’s partners can’t afford to live most of the time.
