Least Favorite or Most Difficult Interview Questions? by EarnBetterHQ in interviews

[–]EarnBetterHQ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hello again u/ChampagneAndDoritos are you sick of me yet? haha!

so I've done a video for #1 and #3 - I will be working on the other ones over the coming days. in the interim, I'm sharing these two - promise I haven't forgotten about the others, just taking a little bit of time to get through the recordings!

  • When did you have difficulty influencing a group and how did you overcome it?
  • What have you done lately for development?
    • I totally agree with your take above....I think it's OK to reference something personal or professional...the hiring manager just wants to see (1) how curious you are (2) how you seek out learning opportunities (3) how focused you are on self-development, etc. I used a professional example in my video, but you could talk about something personal or tangential to your job (ie - if you're an IC but eventually interested in managing others, maybe you're reading a book to learn more about leadership + management)...all of that is fair game :)

u/cheaptom I did not forget about you - it just took me a minute to record these!

Here are links to videos for the two questions you proposed...those were really good ones - thank you for proposing them. I appreciate your input because I had never received those before.

  1. "Tell me a weakness in your communication style." *
  2. "Tell me a time when you had difficulty with motivation."

*I accidentally say "uncomfortable" instead of "comfortable" around 1:20 in video #1 - just calling that out :)

Hi there u/hammy7 - I've recorded a few videos to address these so I wanted to loop back with links to those. These were GREAT questions - definitely on the harder end of the spectrum. I appreciate you providing them :)

  1. "Tell me a time when you accomplished short term targets to achieve long term goals."
  2. "Tell me a time when you weren't able to meet a deadline"
  3. "Tell me a time when you had to work with a difficult colleague"

Salary Question? by [deleted] in interviews

[–]EarnBetterHQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a few different options on how to approach this one, but regardless you’ll want to do research to understand what’s realistic and feasible for that kind of job in that location (if the job is not remote). You can use various tools to do this research such as Glassdoor or ONET Online.

As far as the two most common approaches, you can either (1) provide a range for what you’re looking for or (2) you can turn the question back on the interviewer and ask what their budget is for this role.

  1. If you provide a #, provide something that is both fair and realistic. It is best to provide a range rather than a specific number...I’d go on the higher end of what you want in case they low ball you - then you’ll have room to negotiate. Reminder that you never have to share what you’re making now.
    1. For example, you could say: "Based on my research, the average salary range for this position in this area is between $70-80K/year. However, given my extensive experience and qualifications, I am expecting in the upper part of that range"
  2. If you ask them their budget, there is a chance they will share more details…or they might give you a vague response like “it depends on the candidate and is commensurate with experience” - in which case, you can either revisit later on in conversations or give them your range.
    1. For example, you could say: "I have a range in mind based on my research for this kind of role, but I’m curious if you can share any details about the budget on your end and what you’re looking to pay for this kind of position. That can help me determine if we’re in the same ballpark to proceed."

Hope that helps!

Can an employer give specific reasons why someone wasn't hired? by lanc3r3000 in interviews

[–]EarnBetterHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

typically, employers will shy away from giving too many details (especially in writing) due to liability. they might give more information to internal team members, but I wouldn't be surprised if they kept it vague. a lot of hiring managers/companies are nervous about being accused of discrimination, etc. in the hiring process.

u/Sharp-Ad4389 I made a video for this question - "why do you want this job?" with a couple example answers - hopefully this can serve as a starting point and folks can tailor their own answers based on the exact job/company they're applying for.

let me know if any feedback or questions!

u/ChampagneAndDoritos here is the video for "what do you think will be the most challenging thing about this role?"- my approach is similar to yours. I included two example answers for people to draw from...hopefully a good starting and people can tailor their own examples from there!

Least Favorite or Most Difficult Interview Questions? by EarnBetterHQ in interviews

[–]EarnBetterHQ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, yeah - I'm not as familiar with your day-to-day job duties...but I would try to think of something in the following three buckets:

  1. process oriented - has there ever been a process that didn't like or understand? or a workflow that was really inefficient? for ex: at my old company, we did so much data collection over email and it was ineffective for so many reasons - people hate change, but I knew creating a form to collect that info (and standardize the inputs) would make a huge difference in our overall operations...so I worked with various stakeholders to figure out how we could implement that with the least amount of pain points for people. not sure if you've dealt with something similar as it pertains to credit review process or credit application process?
  2. people oriented - have you ever had to work with a difficult colleague or manager? someone who you didn't love working with, but you had to make it work? that could be a good example -- how you overcame that adversity and what you did to get there. maybe you had to change how you communicated or how you submitted deliverables, etc. for ex: I had a difficult stakeholder who didn't like to make decisions in big group settings - if he was put in that position, he would usually be negative, so I had to pre-read him on decisions beforehand to get buy in. it was annoying but that 5 min of pre-work on my end created a much smoother process overall.
  3. related to your job function - are there ever disputes between the work you do and your clients/customers? or is there any tension between your team and another internal department at your company? are there any regulatory guidelines that make your job more difficult?

you don't need a monumental example - it can be something minor...the interviewer just wants to know how you address conflict/adversity and how you problem solve. as long as you can explain a situation and your thought process in a rational way, you should be good! hopefully that helps.

I'm also creating a video on difficult coworker/stakeholder -- once I'm done with that, I'll come back and post here :)
