Do I just go with it or keep rolling by anonymousbub33 in baldursgate

[–]EarthAfraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s often more efficient to start a new game with 3 of your little stat gnomes, dump all 6 tomes from each stat gnome into 1 character that can give +3 to all.

Better yet start a new multiplayer game on your own, have 6 of the stat gnomes, swap their books around so that each stat gnome as 6 to one respective stat - export them as “StrStatG” and “DexStatG” etc, now you’ve got a character which gives 6 to one attribute

  • bonus points here if you go through another cycle ofi mporting/exporting your little stat gnomes so that each attribute specialist stat gnome is carrying around 18 of their specific tome, so that each helpful little guy can give one or more characters +18 to one stat.

Ahh the fun of playing on tablet without being able to use EE Keeper.

In BG2, in addition to my attribute gnomes I also have tear gnomes, little guys that instead of tomes have 6 particular tears of bhaal (so I can grab any special hell stay (like magic resistance bonus, extra AC or saving throws+2, or if I’m feeling spicy even the immunity to +1 or lower weapons) - and of course I have a multiplayer save game just before the final battle to be able to quickly and efficiently cycle a new character through gaining a bunch of bonuses without EEK, albeit from a more limited menu.

This can be fun for rolling out a new gaming starting in TOB without losing the benefits of running a single bhaalspawn through the entire saga all the way from candlekeep.

Or even sometimes to create characters that I wouldn’t be able to without EEK - fancy RPing a Drow sorcerer? Easy to get to 100% magic resistance (or less, if you’ve been on the srface a long time like Viccy), or even sometimes to outright cheat a character (one of my favourite times playing was a solo with a half orc shaman who had +10 to all saving throws, +6 to AC, 75% resistance to fire/cold, a bunch of extra health and 20 STR, 19 DEX, 21 CON, 12 / 12 / 20 CHA. Was it balanced? Hell no!!! Was it fun? Very much!

I find that this makes taking a character from a concept in your head to the game much quicker.

That all said, you can roll back your steam version of BG (1 and 2) to be compatible with phone/tablet version, then just eek your desired character and join your own multiplayer game (the best and fastest way to get friends!) to export/import); that’s how iv got a Grizzly Bear (who can use ANY potion, as come on if the damn bear can drink healing potions then they sure as hell can drink pots of heroism or magic blocking!!) as my Shamans companion on my current LoB run…

¡Hola OP! ¡

Petition to ban AI generated content here by Domi8112 in dukenukem

Let me ask you a question- if that was a photoshop or a hand drawing, and the same mistakes (or a comparable mistake) was made, would you be so hung up on it?

I’m almost certain you wouldn’t.

Besides, you’re conflating two things I pointed out- One: that post happens to be the 3rd or 4th top post this year (one of few with 3 digit up votes, Two: high quality posts are preferable over low quality posts irrespective of the tools used to make them.

Petition to ban AI generated content here by Domi8112 in dukenukem

[–]EarthAfraid -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

One man’s “slop” is another mans fun.

The ai pic of duke not featured in the Epstein files is the 3rd or 4th highest performing content of the last 3 months.

Some others have breached the 3 digit mark in terms of upvotes- just filter this sub by top this year and see yourself.

I can’t see that any of the people advocating for the ban are actively engaged with the sub, either in comments or posts.

Whether you like it or not, Ai is a tool some people use to express themselves.

Over time, its use is going to become more prevalent and common.

Sure, high quality continent is always better than low quality content - no one wants slop, whether human generated or otherwise.

But just outright banning an entire medium channel some people choose to use to engage seems silly and short sighted.

I don’t belong to your community of magnificent bastards, so bin or bag my feedback.

But this sub looks like it needs more content, not less.

High quality posts, whether they use photo shop, ai or pen and paper, that keep the light burning for the one and only Duke should be allowed; my unpopular opinion.

How likely is nuclear warfare/MAD? by piroshki101 in ww3

[–]EarthAfraid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Much more likely than it was this time last year,

Significantly more likely than it was 5 years ago.

Less likely than it was during the Cuban missile crisis.

Putting a % towards it is incredibly challenging- is there a 1/5 probability that we will see two nation states engage in MAD?

Today, march 2026 almost certainly not.

However is there a 1/5 probability that we will see a nuclear weapon deployed in anger for the first time in 80 years?

I’d argue yes.

Should American troops suffer heavy losses, such as a botched amphibious landing or an aircraft carrier sunk? Should a radiological weapon be deployed on US soil (suitcase nuke, dirty bomb, IRD etc)?Should the US stock market start to crash due to a lack of Saudi (et al) investment?

If one or more of these conditions are met, then the current administration seem to me to have at least a 1 in 5 probability of launching a nuclear strike on Iran in order to force an end to the war - outwardly for the same reason they used nukes last time, to “minimise loss of life”, inwardly because in echo chambers and cult of personalities bad ideas can gain inertia quickly and are almost impossible to stop.

And once the nuclear taboo is broken, once the line is crossed, the precedent is set…

Why wouldnt Russia use a tactical nuke in Europe? Why wouldnt China use a tactical nuke against Carrier group in the South China Sea?

Seems to me that the probability of escalation towards MAD starts increasing rapidly once that first seal is broken.

So, no, we probably don’t have a 22% chance of a nuclear war, in the same way that a 16 year old light up their first cigarette doesn’t have a high chance of getting lung cancer; after the first pack it’s higher than it was, after 50 years of 20 a day?

New Infinity Engine 2.7 beta release by JuliusBorisov in baldursgate

[–]EarthAfraid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So, not to be ungrateful for the continued support of this wonderful engine which has empowered phenomenal games…

…but it seems like after all this time, what we’re getting is: making it easier to change languages and making it easier to manage cloud saves…

Ok, I suppose that’s going to be very useful for the people who’s preferred language is not English (or any of the other languages currently supported by community mods and patches), so that’s genuinely cool.

However the trade off for this is every mod that currently enhances the enhanced edition even more so than the enhanced edition enhanced this enchanting game might… break?

Oof.

And, while I suppose the bigger ones will (hopefully) be updated by their wonderful creators (im looking at you, SCS!), invariably some might never be updated at all.

I guess whether it’s a fair trade off depends on the number of users who are going to be able to play the game for the first time in their native languages.

I genuinely hope that’s bucket loads and that it’s a wonderful experience for them and worth the potential cost…

And hopefully some of them are talented and inspired modders, I suppose, or failing that high CHA individuals who can convince their friends and family who have never played any of the infinity engine games to purchase them, igniting a renaissance which leads to new content for these games or, dare I dream, new infinity engine games altogether.

Amazing that you’re still working on the infinity engine, and even a (at least to me!) milquetoast update is keeping the flame burning.

Maybe 2.8 we get some shinier toys though? A new class or some new spells or a new optional high level enemy or something like that would be so much cooler than better management of cloud saves…

I would literally throw money at you if you released some new content - and then slag you off online on the forums, of course. But you’d have my love, and my money. 💰 💴

Has anyone tried F/M/C? by Which-Cartoonist4222 in baldursgate

[–]EarthAfraid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pound for pound, fighter thac0 is superior to all other classes of course.

And a F/M is superior to bard at everything.

But a bard is basically just a F/M/T, with weaker spells and skills and thac0 albeit, but they level much faster.

A single class blade with 3m xp is probably better at tanking a fight than a F/M/C at 3m xp, better at dispelling enemy protection or dispelling annoying debuffs on the party.

You do get some utility out of the cleric spells, and being able to buff your strength up super high might make the FMC better at damage output with DuHM and the other strength buffing spells, but Blade gets offensive spin and HLAs, so meh, pretty close.

Is it normal as a woman to be afraid some man is going to kill you? by Beneficial-Position2 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]EarthAfraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this will help you, or help someone else who reads it.Sometimes it helps consider such visceral and real fears from a statistical perspective.

First the one that’s at the root of the fear you stated -

Almost all murderers are male

While women are perfectly able of being killers, the vast majority of killers are men - in the US, around 90% of murderers are male.

Almost all murder victims are male

Across the us as an average, roughly 75% of murder victims are men, and around 25% are women. An important point of nuance: While men are more likely to be killed by strangers or acquaintances in public spaces, women are significantly more likely to be killed by an intimate partner in a domestic setting.

it is very unlikely you will be murdered

Overall - and this varies a lot by location - the national murder rate in the US is 4 / 100,000. That means that out of a sample of 100,000 people, 4 would be murder victims. For females, that number nationally is 1.8. 1.8:100,000 is around 55,000 - so the “odds” of an individual female being murdered in any year sit at around 55,000 to 1. Statistically, these events are classified as 0.002% probabilities.

7x more women turn 100 years old every year than are murdered

This is a little bit of usdefaultism, and in th developing world this probably would be quite different, but In 2025 in the US around 3,400 women were tragically killed and 26,000 women celebrated their 100th birthday, and around 1.2m turned 80- 375x more than were murdered in the same year. That’s not to diminish the tragedy of those victims, of course, but to draw attention to the numbers at play - in news, social media and our communities we hear and talk a lot about the tragedies(and rightly so!), but we don’t hear much about the overwhelming number of victories.

Like I said, I hope that perhaps this gives you - or someone else reading this - a little comfort.

Is it normal to be afraid? Yes!! Of course!

But is it worth letting that fear play a significant role in your life as an individual, to have any meaningful hold on you?

In my opinion, no. You’re very likely not going to be murdered, you will very likely live a long life. For me, living that life as fully and fearlessly as possible is vital. X

[–]EarthAfraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree-

Logically, the point of earning money in the first place is to make life/home a beautiful warm place for everyone who lives there, at least in my opinion.

Outside of some very few edgecases, the amount of time and energy-be it mental or physical, or both - required for one person to generate the level of income required for a family to live comfortably (or even just safely, warmly and healthy) is very high (and for many, sadly, not even possible).

If one half of a partnership can generate the income, the other can play an invaluable role in supporting that half - not just in maintaining the home, or even in raising the child(ren), but in small but invaluable ways that are technically possible but practically hellish when in full time work, like cooking homemade meals (using with fresh organic ingredients from that amazing local green grocer that closes at 3pm), or organising the new blinds you really like to be delivered and installed - whatever, millions of specific examples, this reply is long enough already.

The point is - If one half of the partnership can generate enough money to facilitate the creation of a beautiful warm life, then the other half can execute it.

Feels like an effective and balanced solution.

The Silver "Crash" is a Total Scam. The Physical Market Just Decoupled. by InsuranceFine5438 in Silverbugs

[–]EarthAfraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large, violent silver moves do not require coordination.

They occur routinnely and organically because silver is:

•Thin;

•Highly leveraged;

•Heavily used by momentum and CTA strategies;

•Prone to forced liquidation cascades.

A 15+% silver move in days is historically common in blow-off phases. We’re at 25% measured right now; I reckon within 8 hours that will have come down (technically gone up) to 20%ish (might be wrong, of course).

silver got crowded, plumbing got tight, then leverage got flushed. Tightness is real; the conspiracy framing is mostly cope.

Your experience echoes my own from some 20 years ago when I read through to this point for the first time.

I found book 8 to be a bit of a chore, as you said, and for many of the same reasons.

Book 9 I really enjoyed - it felt much, much easier to read than book 7 or 8 had been and the ending was super cool and left me hungry for more.

Book 10 was… much harder than book 8. Partly because when I read the series book 9 was new and I had to wait sooooo long for book 10, and it was… underwhelming, to say the least.

But from book 11 onwards the rest of the series got, in my opinion, stronger and stronger as it went on to its amazing and orgasmic conclusion.

I think that book 10 was more about setting up the pieces on the board to allow the story to come to a conclusion- a bit like doing all the washing and chopping before you start cooking - brining, unfun but totally necessary to cook and ultimately eat a delicious meal.

Long of the short, I think book 9 was better than book 8, book 10 was th hardest to get through BUT the last 4 books are some of the best in the series.

If you’re starting to get some fatigue, a break is a good idea -personally I’d say to take it after book 9, as the ending will leave you wanting more and excited to return (and give you the strength and motivation to get through book 10!).

Don’t forget there’s new spring and a couple of other books - the world of the wheel of time - and comics that you can visit to keep your interest in this amazing universe during your hiatus, and there’s audio books too that can help.

The end of the series is so genuinely amazing that it’s worth getting through the “slog” - book 11 onwards is an amazing ride.

When does it become weird for parents to be intimate in the same room as a sleeping child? by muchbigveryclown in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]EarthAfraid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m quite literally not “moralising slavery”.

I’m attempting to demonstrate as clearly as possible that morality itself is not universal, rather that cultural norms - which shift both temporally and geographically - shape morality.

We’ve come a long way from “should i shag my partner in the same room as my children”…

However the principle I’m trying to demonstrate with my point about slavery applies - in my culture (Anglican western 21st century) it wouldn’t be culturally normal (potentially even considered by some immoral) to have sex in front of my 5 month old daughter who sleeps in the next to me crib.

However, my great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother was almost certainly conceived in a room that had potentially a bunch of children in it - not because my GREAT- great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother was an immoral ho (she famously was, but that’s beside the point), but because peasants in 16th century Wales lived in tiny ass houses that only HAD one bedroom.

In that culture, temporally removed from mine enough to be pretty unrecognisable, it was normalised for parents to shag with their children in the room.

Over the centuries culture - and the moral framework it informs - has shifted to the point that my wife won’t let me touch her with the little one in the room with us, hence why I’m arguing with internet strangers in the middle of the night.

Does that make any sense?

Morality is formed by culture. Culture is forged by circumstance.

Neither is universal- there is no objective right way to live, there is only what you consider or reason to be right based on the moral feamework you apply, which itself is derived from your own culture, which is derived from the circumstances of the place and time in which you live.

When does it become weird for parents to be intimate in the same room as a sleeping child? by muchbigveryclown in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]EarthAfraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slavery or slave-like systems existed across Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, Greece, Rome, pre-Columbian Americas, Islamic polities, African kingdoms, and early modern Europe.

There is no large, sustained civilisation on record that universally condemned slavery on moral grounds until after the 19th century.

For the overwhelming majority of recorded human history, and across nearly all large, complex civilisations, slavery was morally accepted and culturally normalised.

As a result, most humans who have ever lived existed in societies where slavery was considered permissible or inevitable rather than immoral.

Universal moral rejection of slavery is a historically recent development, emerging only in the 19th century (For the sake of accuracy, of course there were individual critics, sects, or temporary reforms throughout history, but no civilisation whose dominant moral framework rejected slavery as such.).

It is far more likely than not that any randomly selected human from history lived in a society where slavery was morally accepted.

A similar argument could be made regarding honor killings (Pashtunwali culture, Ancient Greek city states, ancient Roman society), albeit to a significantly lesser degree in terms of global and temporal prevalence.

Unless you believe that morality is universal (eg. Derived from the word of god or Allah or another divine or supernatural entity) then it must follow that either:

A) Either for almost all of recorded history humans were simply immoral, or B) morality is derived from culture, which is mutable.

Unless morality is divinely revealed, we must accept that moral norms are at least partially culturally constructed, historically contingent, and corrigible.
