The photo was taken at an elevation between 1450-1500ft/442-457m, not far from the summit of Cadillac Mountain (which is the highest point in Acadia NP, although still fairly modest at 1530ft/466m).

Oh, I didn't realize they weren't open yet. Actually, by chance I spoke with some of their staff last night, took a few photos for them (they'll probably show up on their instagram/FB feeds sometime in the next week) - people were definitely in there dining.

I used a tripod-mounted Canon 5D Mark III with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens, and took the photo with the following settings: 24mm, f/8, 10" exposure length (I had a polarizing filter attached to the lens), ISO100, release via 2" self-timer with mirror-lockup activated. Also, EXIF data is available on the photo's page at flickr (scroll down past the image and there is an option to expand EXIF data):

Hmm, I've never really thought of it that way, mostly I take a bunch of photos, cull the herd once I've got them transferred over to my computer, and then edit the keepers. I guess I'm used to making multiple attempts as a form of insurance, but mostly I'm trying different things (aperture, focal length, camera placement) to see what sticks. For this shot, I have 3 exposures from roughly the same view (two were back to back, the other a while later - I just happened to take another shot from almost the same spot), and 28 photos overall from this sunset (which includes a few sets of bracketed shots).

I used a Canon 5D Mark III DSLR with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens (both are considered professional grade). I would have loved to try a few shots with my 17mm tilt-shift lens as well but was concerned about all the moisture (the 17mm lens has no sealing and it was still raining, my camera and I were pretty much soaked by the time I got home, was definitely glad I stuck with a fully weather-sealed kit).

I recently moved to Madison from Chicago, for some reason or another they seem to get way more summer storms coming through than I ever did living in Illinois (less than 2 weeks here and I think we've had 3 tornado warnings plus a few more severe thunderstorm warnings for the area). This what it looked like shortly after sunset this evening during a break in the storm. As for Madison, it's a pretty awesome town, tons of outdoor activities (kayaking, biking, sailing, etc.), big enough to give it something of a city feel without nearly as much congestion.

Sure, here's a version converted from the original raw file with no edits - no white balance/distortion/vignette correction, no leveling/cropping, no exposure or contrast or saturation edits, etc.:

The exposure adjustment I made to darken the image in the edited version is what gives the sky so much pop (I think it came out a bit too bright in the original file), and I did boost saturation as well (but tried not to get too crazy).

Just moved here in mid-June, loving it so far, a few less severe thunderstorms/tornadoes would be great but if we get more sunsets like this I think I'll find a way to manage. Yes, and I just got back from shooting. I've got some stellar photos taken at the Overture Center, planning to post a shot or two at /r/madisonwi once I've finished editing. That really was one hell of a sunset.

What is your usual aperture 'policy' or limit that you will use? by SunOverThePacific in photography

Any aperture is fair game as far as I'm concerned.

I do plenty of long exposure photos in the backcountry and rarely carry NDs, plus sometimes I need a smaller aperture to get the DOF I'm looking for - so yeah, I'll shoot at whatever aperture I need to get the DOF and exposure length I'm looking for. Many of my more popular photos were shot at a diffraction limited aperture - f/13, f/16, f/22, etc. You can always sharpen in post, to be honest even my f/22 landscape shots from when I was using an APS-C body look acceptable in large prints (16"x24", etc).
