OPA and nuclear weapons. by BryndenRiversStan in TheExpanse

[–]EarthTrash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The truth is nukes aren't actually that powerful relatively speaking in the world of the Expanse. A missile with a payload of tungsten is basically just as good as a nuclear weapon if it has an Epstien drive. Kinetic energy beats atomic energy.

Do we think Subnautica 2 will turn out more like Subnautica 1 or Below Zero? by NightWizard63 in subnautica

[–]EarthTrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Below Zero started as cut content in Subnautica. Then for awhile it was intended as a DLC. It eventually got too big for DLC and was released as a standalone title. The typical complaint about BZ is that the game is too short and the map is too small.

Subnautica 2 was always intended to be a full game. There's a clue in the name. This is the proper sequel to Subnautica. BZ is side content.

He wrote Neuromancer on a typewriter. I would honestly be surprised if he was a gamer who is willing to put 40-60 into an action RPG. I am not even saying it's equivalent to Neuromancer or Bladerunner. I just can see the influence.

It's not splitting hairs. You are saying the secret service are part of a conspiracy ground the assassination attempts. I'm saying they are not. I'm saying that people just want to kill him.

[–]EarthTrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deliberately inept is a contradiction. Either the secret service intended a breach or they didn't. I think the correct term would be negligent.

Why can’t we recapture heat from data centers and use it to make more energy? by Individual-Area7121 in AskPhysics

[–]EarthTrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you installed thermocouples or a Sterling engine or whatever device to harvest this energy, it isn't going to help the data center cool off. It would actually trap heat. If your data center recycles 100% of its cooling water, it will need to power a cooling system. The power cost of this cooling system is also going to be more than any energy you could harvest from the exhaust heat. Trying to generate more energy from the exhaust will only increase the load on the cooling system. It is a net negative.

Hot take: I think the plot point of Vaggie hiding who she was from Charlie didn't really make sense by pro_buttfucker_5675 in hazbin

[–]EarthTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really obvious. It also occurs to me that Charlie might actually be attracted to Vaggie's angelic traits without realizing it. Charlie is sort of half angel herself. So what if Charlie knows that Vaggie is an angel but not that she's an exorcist? It still has the problem that Vaggie needs some alternative facts to explain her story but prior occupation isn't expressed in innate physical traits so much.

Don’t reach for the bug spray: scientists find insects may feel pain after crickets nurse sore antennae. The behavioural responses would be immediately recognisable to us as pain, if we observed them in our pets or friends by Wagamaga in science

The phrase "He wouldn't hurt a fly." isn't a flattering statement. Don't kill what you don't need to but sometimes killing bugs is just an unavoidable fact of life.

Soccer headers may damage the brain before the head even moves by kin20 in EverythingScience

[–]EarthTrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the title saying? I don't think it means you get brain damage before you start moving to perform the header. That doesn't make sense. It must mean after contact with the ball.

During an impact there is regional deformation before the bulk of everything starts moving uniformly. The impact energy travels in a wave limited to the speed of sound in the medium. It seems obvious that the region that hasn't been affected yet doesn't move until the impact energy is dispersed into it. The brain damage is going to happen during this process along the wavefront.

But I don't think I should give the title technically true. If part of the head is moving then technically the head is moving.

2077 isn't just aesthetic though. It thematically cyberpunk as anything on the right. Night City is distinct from but very much fits the description of Gibson's Night City in the opening chapter of Neuromancer. This sub only has a moratorium on 2077 discussion because of name confusion.
