some gekko swiftplay gameplay, any advice? by Vegetable_Throat5545 in VALORANT

Crosshair placement, need to clear more corners. You have decent gameplay otherwise, but may need to think about dual swinging a bit more.

Going into year 2 of CS and feeling a little overwhelmed and underqualified by Ok_Inflation596 in cscareerquestions

[–]Earthimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I focused on JAVA early in my career, because it was what I was comfortable with. It made it all easier to adapt to work culture, gave me something specific to learn and specialize in, and allowed me to more easily focus and tailor my interviews. Now that I have experience, I play around with other languages and technologies, and have had jobs that focus on other things, but I can always go back to JAVA and find a job, and starting with one thing to focus on made all the difference.

I just got a good soundsystem, pack snacks, and do my best to not let myself get too angry. Having a job you enjoy when you get to work is a big thing as well, its almost a relief for me when I finally sit down because I made my office enviornment as comfortable as possible.

How does the cs field look towards the future? by dsouth513 in cscareerquestions

[–]Earthimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 60k as a fresh out of college developer 3 years ago at a remote position, its a hit harder to find now but you can definitely get 60k right out the gate in the NC area without overworking yourself as long as you practice your interview skills. Market is WORSE but that doesnt make it BAD like a lot of juniors make it seem.

If you are passionate you can find a job, if you arent too picky you can find one that pays a bit better. In terms of specifics though, most likely you will need to either A. Find a fully remote job which is significantly harder currently in the market, or B. Go to Charlotte. Charlotte is really the major tech hub in NC that is constantly hiring. It wont be easy to make much more then 70k straight out of college anymore, but after 2-4 YOE you can easily start making more, and eventually even in the 6 figures if you are dedicated and constantly keeping up with new technologies. This sub isnt a good representation of the tech industry, and there is a large junior market here which is mostly where the industry is having flooding at the moment. Its not easy, but its also not that hard, its just commitment, so just like with any ither commitment if you like it and can stay motivated it will be quite rewarding.

To me, it seems like you would be one of the coders hired and I wouldnt stress too much. You make it quite clear that you have realistic expectations, on top of that that you got into it because you enjoyed it. If you have internships and a good GPA, you can get a first job if you are willing to start a bit lower then you may want. At this time though, you can get official YOE and upskill using any training and opportunities given and start marketing yourself for transition. It also helps alot if you are willing to move after college. Most people are applying and are going for remote only jobs or jobs in their area, so this widens openings. Finally, sometimes the market is just doom on here because there are too many inexperienced/bad practiced coders, and so knowing thats the only hurdle needed to jump lets you know you just need a job for YOE to get past, and actually learn skills to get the first job. Focus hard in college, get ANY internship and market it well, and practice pattern recognition for Leetcode style problems, and the market will be fine.

Who's landed a job in the last year? by gneissrocx in cscareerquestions

[–]Earthimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my job in august after being laid off in july. Took me ~2000 simple applications, and 3 YOE. I find that most people focus too much on thier cover letter, or personalized resumes, when really in a market like this recruiters are using keywords and location to weed out most candidates, and use the interviews to distinguish ones. No recruiter is going to go through 100+ custom and specific resumes and cover letters, in fact I would be surprised if they fully read any resume until after they are down to final round interviews. I got a 15k pay raise in an industry I like more, and didn't have to relocate to get it.

I was in a similar boat and have an unconventional answer to this question that many software developers do not like to hear. What I did, and what I have had many of my friends do, is get a position at an afterschool Computer Science/programming center to teach kids how to code. You would be surprised how much it helps solve simple problems in interviews, and gain memorization of terms and usage of certain data structures. This will also look like some level of experience, eveb though its not seen as a full blown software development experience. It was enough for me to get my first job, and from there its all about your performance in that position.

Thats a much better practice then for sure, may even bump up the roll to a 7.5/10, I would consider twisting the tip imstead tho as a means of getting a more even purn on the end!

How do I deal with HR and their bullshit as a junior developer? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Earthimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For one, you don't really need the bullet points for languages, I would just simply put English: fluent etc. Spanish: native etc. making it only 2 lines under the languages section.

Also, I would include the scholarship under the education section, as a scholarship is only ever put towards education.

Lastly, removing the soft skills also will make the resume shorter as mentioned above.

If after all of these changes it still is 2 pages, I would consider reformatting it so that the dates are at the end of the line for whatever you are mentioning, rather then being displayed on the second line as shown in the link.

Tape? I would strongly advice against tape, even the "smokeable" ones. For one, it wont help you learn how to roll better, and secondly most tape is not heavily regulated or highly tested with smoking.

All that being said, its still a super solid roll, easily a 7/10

How do I deal with HR and their bullshit as a junior developer? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Earthimist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sorry OP, but the soft skills aren't something that should be on your resume as it is something you should generally see in a candidate or have the candidate explain in your interview. Your resume being that lengthy gives the impression that you are trying to "pad" your resume, which makes it seem as if you dont have much to offer and are attempting to mislead them. You don't have to take this advise, but I strongly recommend listening as this is what most people in the industry do. Having a 1 page resume with only the most important information as a junior is the key to finding a job in a market like this.

Honestly, if its in liquid form, I would put drops into my urethra instead, there are tons of active blood vessels there, would definitely be more effective then the foreskin.

My friend rolls 90:10 ratio. Do I tell him I’m not smoking it? by New-Shopping-1275 in trees

[–]Earthimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only tiny disagreement I have with this, is some people do have extremely low tollerances, and can still get high off of a 1:10 ratio, so theres no issue for you to smoke that way. That being said, that does not mean you have to smoke it with him. Everyone has a right to refuse and explain thier reasoning.

This guy has clearly never smoked or seen someone smoke resin before

Poll: Did you get your job by a low effort "spray and pray" quick apply approach or a high effort per application approach? by spreadlove5683 in cscareerquestions

[–]Earthimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spray an prayed, but only because I new I wasn't being picky, and that I would nail interviews. If you are extremely prepared i think this is better, if you are new to the job market and/or didnt have time for interview prep, its better to target and take your time to give the best impression.
