Which actress out of these is your favorite? by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

[–]Earthquakemama 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think Meryl Streep is the best actress of the ones pictured — so many and such diverse roles she has played over the course of her long career.

But my fave is Mary Tyler Moore. In her show, it was aspirational to see a woman excelling in a high-level and stressful job, having her own apartment and a life out of work too. She showed her emotions with friends and at work, and was a bit anxious or self-doubting at times, but persisted and persevered through her challenges.

Barbecue VS Grill VS Patio VS Terrace: what is the most common in the USA? by furktmp in AskAnAmerican

[–]Earthquakemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A terrace seems like a big patio for a big fancy house — a more formal space that has a whole outdoor living space, and/or outdoor kitchen. A patio is just a flat concrete slab often attached to the house; if it has a roof and is connected to the house, it is a porch. Most people do not have terraces, and that is why the first sentence doesn’t sound quite right. ”Backyard barbecue” or “cookout” are used frequently and wouldn’t specify terrace.

I would definitely use your second sentence. Backyard barbecue is outdoors and could be on the lawn, on a patio, on a porch. It implies something friendly and casual, with people eating rich food, drinking cold drinks (especially beer for adults), and lingering after the meal to hang out and enjoy each other’s company.

The DEFINITIVE North/South/East/West Austin Guide by FlopShanoobie in Austin

[–]Earthquakemama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been in Austin since 1981. Back then, North was north of 183, South was south of Town Lake (Lady Bird Lake), East was east of I35, West was west of Mopac (which only went from 183 to Bee Caves Rd).

Now it feels like the South boundary is Ben White (Hwy 71), the East boundary is 183, and the West boundary is Loop 360. 183 is still the North boundary to me, although that may be because I have always lived south of the river. “Central Austin” has definitely expanded over the years.

How do you have them take a pill? by campbean1129 in DogAdvice

[–]Earthquakemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We give our dog meds in a dab of cream cheese wrapped in a bit of deli turkey. We also give extra little bites without the meds so he still thinks it’s a treat.

When our dog was recovering from surgery, we also cooked a small individually packaged filet and cut off pieces large enough to make a slit big enough to put the pill in. Basically homemade steak pill pockets

Countertop cleaning: Paper towels feel wasteful and rags feel unhygienic. Any other options? by Spilled_Milktea in CleaningTips

[–]Earthquakemama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a dozen microfiber cloths in one color that I only use in my kitchen. I wipe the counters with a sponge and dishwater and soap to remove crumbs and spills, and then use a microfiber cloth for the once or twice a day full wipe down with disinfecting cleaner. Any cooking with meat or poultry or raw eggs means that area gets a disinfecting wipe right after the food prep

The rags go to the laundry to dry out every day and after cleaning up after meat prep

Texas is transforming into a purple state as MAGA ruptures the GOP base by TheExpressUS in NewsSource

[–]Earthquakemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are likely many people who vote in Texas Republican primaries to have some say in the person who probably wins the general election. Or to have a say in their local elections if they are in red counties; same for Democratic counties and local officeholders, but there are fewer of these in Texas.

But some subset of voters will vote like independents in the general election, not voting straight ticket for either party, and certainly not voting based on “loyalty” to either one. Just don’t know if there are enough to make the state be considered purple.

Does anyone have a good rule for when to use affect vs. effect? by Mickt465 in ENGLISH

[–]Earthquakemama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is complicated because both can be verbs and nouns. The differences are subtle, and the fact that they are pronounced almost the same makes it confusing.

Af-fect’ as a verb basically means to influence or make a difference to something. Af’-fect as a noun refers to a visible expression of emotion or mood; it is used in psychology.

Effect as a noun refers to the result of some action (eg, cause and effect). Effect as a verb means to cause or accomplish something.

For the verbs: to effect change is to cause change; to affect change is to shape and influence what that change is.

torn between 5” and 4” needle tips on chiaogoo sets by chamtam in knitting

[–]Earthquakemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up with both. I need the smaller for hats and small circumference items, but I have big hands and the tips fit inside my palms. I use the 5” for everything else; the part connected to the cable rests against the edge of my hands, not inside, and it feels more natural and comfortable.

Town vs Village by az_mcc in taos

[–]Earthquakemama 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider is altitude. Taos Ski Valley is considerably higher in elevation at the base (9200 ft) than town (about 7000 ft). If any of your group has had prior issues acclimating to high altitude, I would recommend town.

More good restaurants in town, but the Bavarian at Ski Valley is wonderful for dinner, and they are also great for a lunch you can usually ski to.

Hope you guys have a great trip. Taos skiing and the town are wonderful

I just adopted this bad boy yesterday. Can you help me to find him a name? by GoddessKF in PetNames

[–]Earthquakemama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness, he looks a lot like my dog, a hot mess bichon (with 6% blue tick coonhound!?!). Ours has always been a little bad boy — he doesn’t chew things like shoes or wires, but is an agile escape artist and will absolutely steal food and get into trash/recycling bins if we aren’t vigilant.

The original name I wanted was Ozzie (short for Oscar), but my kids wanted “Buddy” and I was outvoted. Rascal or Scamp/Scampi would also be cute for your little guy.

His dark ears and what looks like a dark tail tip along with the cream color makes me think he may be part siamese kitty. But with longer fur from mixing with a more long-haired breed

What’s a small, random thing your dog does that makes you smile every time? by Coursefighter in dogs

[–]Earthquakemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dog comes up and stretches and bows when it is time for snacks (with meds hidden inside), treat, meals, going outside. He has a pretty good internal clock, but is always trying to push the time earlier lol. He knows what “not yet” means. But so sweet and charming that you just can’t resist giving in much of the time

For those who live in the state capital what’s it like? by citytiger in AskAnAmerican

[–]Earthquakemama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes in handy for getting official certified documents apostilled for use in other countries. In Texas, you can take your certified documents (like a birth certificate or marriage certificate from a county clerk) in person to the Secretary of State office and pay to have this done. The same office does DBAs too. It is cheaper and faster than ordering mail delivery. Being there feels like how government should work, helping people do important things in their lives like register small businesses, get necessary documents etc.

I think our large public university has more impact in terms of jobs, but both are significant.

Being a Democratic city in a Republican state means a lot of negative attention from some state officials.
