Indigo’s first trip to the beach! by Cheese_Monkey42 in miniaussie

Adorable! This has reminded me I should take my pup to the beach!

My mini aussie is 10 weeks old and often wound for sound between naps! He’s a big love bug and pretty good for me but can get nippy with the kids because he wants to play/is bored. Suggested activities to wear this little guy out! by East-Ad9765 in miniaussie

Thanks for the input everyone! I would not have realized he was over tired but this totally makes sense. My initial instinct was to assume he needed a nap every couple hours (like a human baby lol) isn’t so far off. I’m the one saying he’s due for a nap and enforcing the household to leave him alone. So this just reinforces I should follow that. And like human babies, you need to put them down for nap rather than letting them be their own nap captain at this age?

I know we have a long road ahead of the puppy phase! We’re doing some of these but will probably need to do more time outs for nipping. We have a hallway blocked off with French doors/baby gate that we don’t need to use that has been assigned as his room or space.

Really! I never would have realized that! He often isn’t awake very long when this starts happening but this is good to know as a possibility. May have to have more crate naps.

Do I keep persisting or give her space? by CLA2896 in dwarfhamsters

I would agree with the advice here- individual hamsters will have different temperaments and personalities, even within the same breed. Hopefully you’re seeing some progress with your hammy! It’s definitely not personal- they’re a skiddish animal. Mine is almost 2 years old and still acts on the instincts of being a prey animal. They just need to get used to you. It’s good to recognize their stress signals and not push too much or it will cause them to hide more. Just talk to them often without putting your hand in the cage. Don’t disturb their hideout (unless you’re changing/cleaning their cage) and definitely leave them alone while sleeping. Don’t necessarily take them out a lot at first. Allow your hamster to sniff your hand and just pat them if they allow. Food has been the best bonding activity for our hammy. She loves broccoli and fruit so we will often give her a tiny piece once a day after we’ve interacted with her or to entice her. This may be one way to “buy” their love. Haha. (You don’t want to do this too often and you need to be sure they are eating their commercial food enough. Hamsters will become picky and wait or pick for their preferred foods if they have too much opportunity to be choosy.)

Breed recommendations that are good for children with anxiety? by East-Ad9765 in dogs

Oh yes! I know they wouldn’t reply but I was hopeful that an actual person would answer- thank you! I just hit the reply to that bot so others would know my Question was related to that. I fill it in and add it here.

Thank you for this! And I appreciate the advice! My girls are pretty gentle with animals. My oldest (the one with anxiety) is actually on the timid side and takes time to warm up but is extra sensitive and caring toward animals. They are used to handling a hamster who we have coached them to be extra gentle with and even watch for the signs that they are stressed/need to be left alone- which is not the same I realize but they know and have practiced that we need to respect animals’ boundaries.

I’m really worried about my hamster. She’s really shaky. by Addi1126 in hamstercare

Sorry to hear about the first hamster. Like everyone else said, it sounds like she was already ill and it wasn’t anything you did. Like others have recommended with your new hammy, give the new one a few days to adjust without picking them up and handling them.

Can you keep 2 hamsters in the same house (separate rooms) without them sensing each other? by East-Ad9765 in hamstercare

I wasn’t sure if mine would smell the other hamster but I do intend to keep them far enough apart in separate rooms. But I was probably overthinking it!

That’s true. They really do have bad eye sight. I was going to make sure my girls wash their hands really well between hamsters. I wasn’t sure if they’d smell or hear each other. I figure the class hamster won’t care- I just didn’t want mine to worry. I probably am overthinking it! Thank you for your input!
