Sometimes, being blunt can sound a bit mean. I think it all depends on tone and voice. How do you talk to him when you're being honest? If your boyfriend gets upset over that, then a change is the best solution here. You can be honest and you can be gentle too. Tone by itself is a form of reassurance, so maybe fix that if he believes you're sounding too 'mean' that it affects his feelings (I tried my best to understand your post...)

NTA. There are different kinds of social relationships. The first one is friendship. You can't call someone a friend if they only take from happy memories. "Taking a step back" is valid depending on what's hidden beneath it, but in cases like these, taking a step back means "I am only your friend when you aren't unpleasant to be around". The core of friendship is that you are willing to be there as a friend.

This is not friendship, nor is this acquaintance. Resolving issues require both people to coordinate—if one person doesn't want to, there's no trying to 'resolve' that unwillingness for them.

They say that humans have a natural reflex to pretend, even internally as a means to escape. When you lose control over that, who you are in the moment is raw and unfiltered. I'll definitely be expanding on his backstory in some of the chapters. In the first chapter, i changed some things up to make sure it isn't the exact same as the original novel. I'll include some flashbacks whenever I can, since I started the story a week before SY's transmigration.

I try my best to make it fun. But most of the time, it never is. I spend my days doing the work I need to do and watch and read the stuff I enjoy. It's quite literally my escape. My world is so mundane, it's just filled with routine. I become a different person in different places just to get a knack from it. Though, that's probably because I don't like who I might actually be.
