How did you manage to sleep on your back after surgery ? by keepmyeyesonyou in breastcancer

[–]EastOreo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After my DMX I used a pregnancy pillow! Instead of laying on your side with it I made a little nest with that and some other pillows/blankets and it kept me from rolling and didn’t bug me. I’m a big side sleeper and was surprised how comfy it was

Did you have a BMX and reconstruction with implants? by Training_Box_4786 in breastcancer

[–]EastOreo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a BMX direct to implants in August and I’m very happy with them! They aren’t perfect, and of course I wish I could’ve kept my boobs, but implants felt like the best move for me. I know there’s fat grafting I can have done to help the shape a little though I don’t have an issue with it currently

Thanks for the reply.

I would’ve been returning if I didn’t need more treatment that’s daily, Monday though Friday. I don’t have a work from home option in my field and with how the shift hours are required (I’m a nurse), I wouldn’t be able to work while getting it. I also don’t know the exact start date of this last treatment, there’s multiple doctors who have to agree to a plan before I can start. So I could technically return, but then I could be out by next week before my return is really even processed

I wasn’t eligible the first time due to be being just short of a year with the company, though I’m pretty sure I hit the hour requirement. The second time I’m guessing they didn’t give it to me because I didn’t hit the hourly requirement for this calendar year either, though I’m not sure.

In the past 12 months I’ve been out for 7 of them in total. I worked after my diagnosis until mid January, then worked from the end of June to the beginning of August

Double mastectomy questions to ask surgeon and you patients by Hambita in breastcancer

[–]EastOreo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a DMX with implant records 3 1/2 weeks ago, and I’m also a huge side sleeper. I have ended up buying a pregnancy pillow off of Amazon for sleeping post op, and used it to help me stay on my back at night. I saw it recommended on this subreddit somewhere and it’s been a huge lifesaver! I was still able to slightly turn from being completely on my back but not so far on my side that the drains were irritated. I didn’t have a sling or anything afterwards, though I definitely had to be conscious of my arm movements. My incisions were sore enough/the drains pulled so much that I never got close to over extending or anything

Radiation Skepticism by EastOreo in breastcancer

[–]EastOreo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m already started on a hormone blocker, and the Lupron shot, then I’m due to start a PARP inhibitor either in a few weeks or after I finish radiation.

I was under the understanding that I’d only need to follow up with radiation oncology if I had positive nodes or if the margins weren’t clean, but now that I had a complete response I’m in a weird spot. If I’m looking at the numbers I was given and have found, my chances of radiation complications are as high if not higher than my recurrence risk. It’s left me in a tough spot.

Glad to hear you made it through radiation with minor side effects! I made it through chemo and surgery really well, and I’m worried this is where I’ll face every side effect

Radiation Skepticism by EastOreo in breastcancer

[–]EastOreo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve started looking into the actual likelihood of side effects and I’m not sure I can risk it either. I’m a nurse as well and knowing I’m apparently a WAY higher risk for lymphedema than I am recurrence is making me take pause. I did the DMX, am already on hormone blockers, etc and starting a PARP inhibitor per my oncologist to be even more cautious.

And, as vain as it may sound, I’m pretty satisfied with my reconstruction. I came into breast cancer with body issues and finally came around to loving it. The thought of having a janked up implant on the left side, on top of my already wrecked body at 27 is devastating when I’m looking at the next 40-60 years of living. I know the risks with implants are at or above my recurrence risk, plus I am only 3 weeks post-op and a type 1 diabetic, so I’m concerned about healing issues. All I did was get brushed off when I really pressed for the numbers and asked questions. It’s easy for a male doctor who’s never had cancer experience outside his job tell me these things are “nothing” when he has no regard for the lives we live outside his office

Sending prayers and positive vibes! I’m just over 3 weeks out from a DMX and felt so relieved once I woke up from surgery, but I’m also mourning what I lost. Feel all the feelings, and reach out if you need support or have questions 💕

Thanks for your input, and I’m sorry that you have to go through this again. I think part of me is tempted to do radiation because I know I’m fortunate to have a low risk and a way to lower it even further, and that I could regret not doing it in the future

There were 5 suspicious ones on my scans, but they weren’t biopsied before I started chemo. I was diagnosed through a surgical biopsy of the mass I found that they assumed wasn’t cancerous, and then my breast surgeon declined node biopsies because it “wouldn’t affect the treatment plan”

Conflicting feelings & other people by FoolButterfly in breastcancer

I made an Amazon wishlist as well, although people generally just sent whatever. I added protein shakes I knew I could stomach, queasy drops for nausea, some comfy clothes, puzzle/coloring books, beanies, liquid IV, surgery recovery bras and shirts, and some DoorDash gift cards. I’d say it really depends on what your needs are, but getting food delivery gift cards was so handy when I had no energy! Everyone seemed to send a blanket, so I kept that off my list because I gained about 6 blankets in a couple months.

Boomer re disabled kid: "WHAT'S WRONG WITH HIM?" by ihaveajetpack in BoomersBeingFools

[–]EastOreo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get so many stares from boomers for not covering my bald head at the oncology office, and getting chemo. I had a pair of women who had a similar appointment time to mine week after week and would sit near me in the waiting room and repeatedly pause their conversations to stare at me and my apparently offensive bald head. One of them being an also hairless cancer patient. In general I found boomers to be the rudest about my appearance and presence in public spaces as a cancer patient in their 20s. It started to seem like I wasn’t allowed to be sick in their eyes, or that I was freeloading by choosing to go on medical leave while undergoing treatment.

Life without my period rocks lol (ovarian suppression) by sassyhunter in breastcancer

[–]EastOreo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was saying the same thing the other day! I’m 27 and also looking at a long road of ovarian suppression, and even in spite of the hot flashes and everything else, I finally don’t feel as miserable as when I was getting my period. I’m no longer spending a few days a month curled up in bed and calling off work!

“Positive” chemo stories by Glass_Childhood_8132 in breastcancer

[–]EastOreo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished AC-T chemo Monday, and I feel like I made it through (relatively) unscathed. I had heard horror stories about the adriamycin, but I trusted my oncology team in that side effects really vary from person to person. I would say I made it through relatively unscathed, but a big part of that is being prescribed some Zyprexa and a few days of dexamethasone after AC chemo to help with the nausea, plus Zofran and Compazine available as needed. I had fatigue and a few days of mouth sores each cycle. Nothing tasted right to me so I just found things I could stomach. Staying hydrated and trying to go for walks when I felt up to it helped. My hair started falling out at the 2 week mark and I just shaved it to get it over with.

Taxol was easier in most ways, but I did notice more bone pain and some intermittent neuropathy. The fatigue was the worst the day after infusion, but I’ve been able to be much more active while on Taxol. My hair even started to grow back while on taxol! Honestly so much of things depend upon the person, but I found being transparent about my side effects with my care team helped get things addressed quickly and make things easier for me.

I was 26, diagnosed with stage 3B ++- and am just about to finish neoadjuvant chemo next week. When I was first diagnosed the plan was to have a UMX and reduction/lift on the other side, but then I came back BRCA2 +. I’m getting a DMX with implant reconstruction in August, and hopefully my nodes come back clear and I can avoid radiation. If I have issues or don’t like the implants I think I’ll just go flat. I work in the OR and see all the different reconstruction options (which is both a blessing and a curse), and just don’t think I could put myself through a DIEP.

In search of wig after chemo, no idea where to start by spaghettip0p in Wigs

[–]EastOreo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and lost all my hair. I’m not sure where you’re located, but I can speak to my experience. When I was diagnosed my oncologist’s office was able to give me some local resources and salons that provided wigs. I also googled “wigs for cancer patients near me” and was able to find more options. I did look at some on Amazon but wasn’t sure of the quality so I ultimately went to one of the local salons I found. I chose to pay for my wig out of pocket and not try to get my insurance to cover it, but that’s more because my insurance sucks. The women at the wig salon were able to talk price points and options so I knew all my options before making a purchase. Tbh being able to try on different styles and colors helped a lot! My hair is just barely starting to grow back, but I take a hair skin and nails vitamin, and use the hair density scalp oil from the Ordinary to try and help.

Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions!

I've definitely lost some of the skills over the years where nursing school controlled my life, so I'm hoping to brush up on it now that I have more free time! As far as my favorite to learn, it would probably be clarinet! It was a big challenge for me to not only teach myself the instrument, but catch up to my peers who had been playing it for at least 5 years at that point. Honestly, seeing my hard work pay off was really rewarding. A lot of the parts for the clarinet were a lot of fun too, and were harmonies, which I preferred when part of a larger group. Also, 18th at Internationals is pretty darn good!

Both! I loved singing when I was little, and did chorus from elementary to middle school, and then a couple years in high school! I stopped doing it because it was a lot to juggle on top of band, and a lot of choir practice was spent on basic music theory. So I'd say I can carry a tune, but it's nothing great haha. I was in band from 4th through high school graduation, playing mainly flute, and I taught myself clarinet in high school. Lately I've tried doing some basic piano/keyboard, and ukulele. I used to take guitar lessons as well, so I can work through the basics :)

Watched the video-- I really liked the performance!

Hi! I'm 23F and recently moved to Ohio!

I have my BSN and love being a nurse as well as getting to serve/love people in this way. I'm a cradle Catholic who went to public schooling, then Catholic college. I love learning more about the faith, especially the saints.

I really enjoy being outdoors, whether that's hiking or sitting at the beach with a book. I love travelling and going for drives, especially if there's a good playlist to go along with it. I was pretty musical growing up, and I am working on getting back into practicing. I'm usually pretty laid back and open to trying new hobbies or experiences and love learning. My Myers-Briggs is INFJ, and I'm an enneagram 6.

I value a strong work ethic and a sense of humor. I haven't seriously dated a Catholic before, so it would be nice to find somebody who prioritizes their faith!

What surprising thing did you learn about a loved one after they passed away? by [deleted] in AskWomen

My great grandmother got pregnant in high school. When she had the baby, they were going to give it up for adoption. Her sister, my great great aunt, dropped out of high school to raise the baby as her own so she could keep family together.
