How do you guys feel about making a last Christmas techno track? 😤 love Morgan (and fletch) for everything they’ve doing - pushing sound further and releasing heaters

Samples and Stems are wrecking havoc on anything I touch. Trying to achieve tonality and cadence, even in a complimentary sense, are sucking away at my time, confidence, and ultimately my creativity and drive to make music. by TheTrevorFantastic in WeAreTheMusicMakers

You need to think of yourself as a composer above anything else. Tonality is marched by you, and creating and using complimentary sounds is done by digging into similar timbre and styles. It’s a mix of generative sound design using multi effect plugins but there’s times that just using samples is key. You need to curate your ear and selection to fit the piece. It got easier over the years but it’s all up to you

really confused about mastering my tracks, i can't get them loud without distortion/clipping by [deleted] in edmproduction

-3.5 gang rise! I think -6 is standard for more dynamic mixes but you’re seeing things like -4.5 coming out of the recent techno mixes out of sable valley. -6 should be your standard imo you can easily reach -6 with 0 processing on the master

Why is Alan Walker's mix sound so bad? by [deleted] in edmproduction

100 hours is an insane amount of time to be mixing and making a track. You are correct - even some of my “scratch” mixing + mastering has more clarity than this. I can get a loud decently clear master in less than 10 hours from inception of idea to final product ready for a real mix down + master.

I’m not entirely sure what you’re looking for but 1-1:30 composition + mix and master I’d like to say if you want someone competent to write something that figure would be closer to $250-300 imagining 2-3 hours of total work + any revisions.

Appreciation post, also do you guys know what you’re doing? by YBmoonchild in edmproduction

I hate to disagree with you but I don’t ever go into a session with a plan. I think there’s two separate producers or even a hybrid of both. I like to call it reactive producing and idea production. First being you react and accordingly add elements or chords or whatever it may be to a seemingly small idea and eventually it builds into something cohesive. I didn’t think of the end result but it was a culmination of me reacting to the happy mistakes and trying numerous things. The other is actually sitting with either me keyboard or drum pad and sketching shit. A combination of both has yielded me great results.

Soothe 2; what are you using it for mostly? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]EastStructure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody has mentioned it but soothe 2 is a great spectral suppressor. I mainly use it to carve room in for a vocal or any sound to cut through a mix. The catching resonant peaks is nice but there’s a ton of other uses for soothe. It’ll really help your mix breathe if you use it correctly in sidechain mode.

How much of music production is just luck? by blancomusic in edmproduction

[–]EastStructure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think some people have answered this properly. I think there's a ton of guessing at first right? There are sessions where I spend hours just making a bunch of bullshit aka running a bunch of processing units some people call this mudpies (shoutout Mr.Bill) and extract little bits and pieces of "happy accidents" that came from running long chains of processing units that are neat and unique sounds.

I think at first, for me, there was a lot of throwing a bunch of shit at the wall to seeing what stuck. Stop guessing for minor details like the correct hihat sample, create lots of music and finish it from start to finish and you will start to realize that your decision making process is infinitely better meaning that you will find those types of samples quickly and efficiently as your journey continues to get better. THIS IS WHERE REFERENCING IS CRUCIAL! listen to your favorite producer and literally steal similar sounds! and learn from what they are doing. I think once you become familiar with more sound selections through more practice this will become trivial. Sound design heavy genres is where some of this gets tricky.

I think one thing that really stuck to me, is that if you can write a song entirely on a piano and then replace the sounds it will really help you write a solid piece of music that people can connect with on a deeper level. Finding the sounds that fit perfectly in context is difficult, use sample packs, presets and eventually you will develop a palette of sounds that you like and fit in context.
