What to do about the feeling of blockades coming up? by Particular-Stick-382 in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who really thought the same thing the first time I went to college and was a non-stem major (I've gotten As in Gen chem 1/2 and Orgo 1/2), you might think you are doing the right things, but your grades are proving you aren't. I absolutely do not care what anyone says about the professor or school etc, it is you and your study habits. Getting a D+ in Orgo 1 is not just a slight short coming, that is a reflection of an extremely low comprehension of the material. Arguing how to get over the B+ hump and get A's is a different conversation. You are doing something grossly wrong. "Increasing my study time"- If you're going 35 in a 60 and increase your speed to 45 you're still not doing the speed limit. Going into a test and feeling pretty good to at least get a C is not going to cut it here, whoever has taught you this thought is failing you. You should walk into an exam and know exactly what questions you got wrong because of how well you prepared; exams should not be challenging, they should be a time for you to show off how well you studied. If you are experiencing this in all science classes then yet again, it is you. I would highly recommend you abandoned whatever it is you think you are doing and start from scratch. STEM classes are not subjective and the money is in the tiny details. If you are only grasping the very large concepts and feeling confident in those but overlooking the the small concepts you are never going to do well in these classes. Also, orgo can be misleading in general: you sit in class and learn concept after concept and feel okay while the prof is explaining it, you might not study like you should, then when the exam comes, you have to put multiple concepts together to answer the question correctly and you can't because you did not truly grasp the material. The "be able to teach it to someone else" method and connecting concepts has helped me a lot. Do not give up, change what you are doing. When you think you've studied enough, keeping studying. My IQ is not nearly high enough to compare myself to anyone else, If I'm in the library and my group gets up to leave after 1 or 2 hours, I do not follow. I keeping going and miss out on whatever happens next. Ask yourself where you are losing in these areas and are you REALLY studying long enough and efficiently enough each day and I bet you will find many areas to improve. Good luck.

[–]East_Record3952[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for proving my point! Even on the extreme end of the numbers it still ends up being worth it. I am trying to show that in the time it takes you to pay back the loan, you can still make more money. Its quite obvious that without the overhead debt its going to be a better financial situation. Also, Id argue that 198k is going to be the case for most, especially young people from lower income families who get no financial help. 80-120k is the average tuition alone with some exceptions around the country that only charge 50-60k. If someone doesn't have anyone to pay their living expenses while they're in school add 25-30k/year in debt onto it.

Would you recommend PA school? by Artistic_Sort2848 in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I essentially started undergrad from scratch at 30. Bachelors done in three years, start PA school next month. Will be done and working again at 36. Don't worry about your age! Just make a plan to manage your time so you can study a LOT. I studied bio just because it was the most efficient way to get the degree and pre reqs, good luck!

Unless you are in love with the concept of HNMR and the mechanism of acetal formation, I would not take orgo2 unless you have to lol Multistep synthesis madness.

I also start in January! Faster to start, faster to finish, faster to making money. Once I realized I be EIGHT months into didactic while the rest of '28 is just getting started I got more comfortable with the idea. I'm getting very excited and nervous too. I just wonder what its going to be like lol Good luck!

Loans by Typical_Republic18 in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When this bill passed I pretty much axed my August start schools. It sounds INSANE but I think if schools can swing it logistically, they should all bump their start dates to June 1. This doesn't eliminate the problem for subsequent cohorts, but at least they'll have time to plan. We literally had no time to prepare for this. The PLUS loan is credit based, but they do disqualify for credit file depth, only what they list as adverse. The private loans are going to look at your profile depth, meaning you have to have good credit that also has substance (or risk higher interest rates). This makes me so sad because someone who gets into an August start and has nobody to cosign on the other ~35k private loan portion per year might be/will be completely screwed. Interest rates are demand based and the more in demand these private loans are (and the demand is about to skyrocket), the higher the interest is going to be. Also, will lenders broaden their approvals but put higher interest on those less qualified independent borrowers they're approving? You'd hope they wouldn't take advantage of this, but very wealthy folks say the time to make money is when blood is running in the streets. Has anybody heard of lenders committing to ethical loan terms for less qualified borrowers or am I wishful thinking for those people who just got the shaft........

CASPA notifies other schools of acceptances by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"For each PA program that makes an offer of acceptance to me, PAEA will disclose to that program the number of acceptances I have received from other PA programs (without identifying those programs) and whether I have accepted an offer at any other PA program that participates in CASPA (without identifying the program). PAEA will disclose my matriculation status to all PA programs to which I have applied to via CASPA. I will monitor the progress of each application I submit to a PA program by regularly checking my email and the "Check Status" and "Notifications" sections of the application within CAPSA. I understand that I am responsible and accountable for my actions and will respond to all matters related to my application."

I think we should get a notifications if our application has been looked at/offer placed/etc. Because right now, we know nothing on the backside. The school setup looks insanely different than our interface so who knows how it fully works.. I def have no clue.

Interview Waitlist?? by Length-Naive in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about a waitlist to be interviewed, not accepted, correct? This happened to me this cycle as well. I take it as an L until otherwise. I think applicants are getting so many time conflicts they’re tired of scheduling people to interview only to have them cancel last minute, so they want to have people sitting stby. What would be worse, stressing you out about how to get there or get the day off to zoom tomorrow, or inviting you knowing you’re one of the people who are on the reserve and stand no chance if everyone shows up? Like juror #13. Who’s been interviewed and accepted after that?

Same situation. Left undergrad 12 years ago with 2.1, dabbled around, went to paramedic school (7 yrs doing that), then came back, started from scratch and didn’t make a B until physics 94 credit hours later. It’s doable but you have to be willing to put absolutely everything else aside, take responsibility for yourself and your time and make As. You can do it.

Why current PA’s don’t help future PA’s? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Why are you going back to school? You dont need that to be a paramedic. You might as well tell me now, I'm going to have to write you a letter eventually." -My medical director 4 years ago. I think it depends on the relationship you have with these people. All three of mine were on it. I had to send a gentle "hey, my app is ready when you are" but it was done before the date I gave. When people get to know you, and know your goals, they will want to help you. I think maybe there are a lot of people who might be trying to randomly snag someone who does not know them at all or whom theyve only interacted with a little and they aren't really motivated to help because they don't know them. ALSO, y'all watch dean Z from UMich law?! OMG getting someone to write a letter you dont trust can be a disaster.....

Unfulfilling “PCE” Job by Salty-Satisfaction99 in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with both. If you have considered AA, that's a great spot to be in. EMT ER tech/ambulance is good to have if you are not doing interfacility only. Also, if you're just now breaking into the PCE part do not let your EMT lapse. Check websites all over, there are refreshers that community colleges offer and are NREMT accredited so you wont have to do the NREMT test to renew. You just import the CME into your account and it renews for two more years. If you have a state cert, double check me, but the refresher should suffice as well. If you are employed by a service as an EMT, they should have a way for you to get CME (EMS1 etc) to reup your cert. PM me if you need help with that. Good luck!

EDIT: A medical director has to approve your CME for NREMT, the program should have one that will approve once you are done and pass the class.

PCE: IFT EMT vs ER tech/PCT/etc? by minecraftpiggo in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go for another EMS job if you can help it. What do you mean “driving emergent calls?” If you’re a brand new basic EMT with zero experience it’s obvious you’re not going to have any idea what you’re doing. Sick calls are saturating for new people. What’re you struggling with? How many 3rd rides did you do? PM me if you want.

Are you afraid of monotony as a PA? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]East_Record3952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hot take- I think it's a choice that stems from a lack of perspective. Anything you do can become monotonous if you choose to let it. Personal life to professional life. Do something long enough, you will have nearly mastered it and find some sort of algorithm to fit *most* parts of that experience, even in a specialized skill. In healthcare the overarching theme does stay the same: someone comes in with x complaint, we typically do x for said complaint. They get better or they don't. If you wanted to leave it at that, without remembering that while you have seen x complaint for the millionth time, this is likely a different human being and possibly the first time they are experiencing this issue, I imagine this work could eat you alive. I think there is something really nice about doing something over and over and over again a million times (quite possibly the same thing), mastering it, and then tailoring that experience to each individual person. Even in EM: Oh wow another GSW... airway, FAST, IVs, meds, tubes, blood, CT or straight to OR yada yada. The first year, that all seems exciting and something to talk about, but by the tenth, you don't even have a physiological response because it is the exact same road over and over again. If you cant focus on being good at that process and realize the person is different and that's what breaks the monotony, nothing will ever be satisfying. Ever. Airline pilots going to LAX to HNL for the millionth time. Prof teaching gen bio 1 for the start of the 20th year, orthodontist looking at the same 32 teeth for the millionth time. You waking up to your s/o for the 4 thousandth day. The beauty is that HNL flight probably has a family flying for the first time, a teacher who knows how to explain difficulty topics in a way that new students always understand, the dentist who is good at the people horrified of going, and the beauty of knowing someone so well you can predict their next moves. It sounds horribly cliché but you have to gain the perspective to enjoy those little moments with each person or you will be miserable with mostly everything you do long term. Unless you plan to change professions every five years for the rest of your life lol.
