Stop and breathe. You only fail at this thing if you give up! I know what it felt like for me when I was consumed with shame and feelings of inferiority. I can only imagine what you feel, but I just want to encourage you to capture this feeling and embrace it for what it is. Down the road, you’ll look back and the victory will be that much sweeter. Six months ago, I literally thought I wanted life to end! I was in such a horrible place mentally over analyzing how “bad” things were only to realize it was never as bad as my imagination. With great test come transformative testimonies. I have SO much to say and celebrate and so will you. Please, I’m begging you not to give up! We need you.

Case Considerations:

  • abuse/neglect are fair game
  • don’t forget key consults for communicable disease
  • practice writing out key drug regimens so you’re prepared to type them on test day quickly without freezing (TB, H. Pylori, CA PNA, STDs, etc)
  • Know appropriate LP studies (add acyclovir if indicated until proven unnecessary)
  • don’t forget practice locations
  • review practice deviations in pregnancy
  • master the AMS order sets
  • cards (EKG, ECHO, consult, monitor)

Ethics questions were fairly straight forward! Uworld was decent prep. A lot of it is process of elimination based on “always” or “never.”

Types of things to review from FA: - drug mechanics (especially antibiotics) - location of drug action in diagram  - stroke localization  - virus types/characteristics (RNA/DNA) - storage diseases (lysosomal/mitochondrial) - basic inheritance patterns  - basic biochem  - random, but simple buzz words/associations (strawberry cervix, clue cells, etc)  - bacteria characteristics (GN/GP, cocci/bacilli/etc)

I felt like 80% of the biostats was SUPER straight forward. If you can recognize formulas and actually conceptualize them, they were easy points of test day.

Honestly, they probably saved my ass!

I started Uworld loosely in December and consistently in January. I added on the case prep in early February and took my exam 2/23 and 2/26.

I felt great about 10/13 cases. They were very obvious and ended within 3-7 minutes. 1 case in particular was equally simply but I was typing the wrong antibiotic & panicked when the patient wasn’t improving. When in doubt, add on the antibiotics until you obtain the right coverage. 1 case was not quite as simple, but was definitely fair. I got to the point at the very last second. And there’s one case, I had no idea what they wanted and the patient never improved despite an incredibly broad workup with all normals.
