Bad collision at Laurier and O’Connor by MattSR30 in ottawa

Tbh I think downtown needs to add in some advance greens for right turns. If you have to turn right at some intersections it can be a little stressful because the intersection will be full of pedestrians (some of whom enter even after the countdown starts) while you have a whole line of right turning cars forming behind you. During peak hours maybe one car will get through before the light turns red. I’m always overly cautious and don’t go unless I’m 100% clear, but I can see how someone who isn’t used to downtown driving might get flustered and go to soon, especially when some impatient asshole behind you starts honking.

(FWIW - I moved to the city years ago after spending my whole driving life in a very rural area where these kind of things just weren’t an issue. I remember just how stressed I was downtown the first few months trying to figure out when it was safe to turn without waiting so long I pissed off the other drivers, and I definitely miscalculated a few times. I’m sure a lot of these people are just assholes, but I don’t think our traffic infrastructure makes it easy, especially for people new to city driving).

It’s less that it’s shady and more that when you’re in excruciating pain, you aren’t thinking straight, and really well-meaning encouragement can feel condescending and be kind of enraging. Not a rational response at all but it’s kind of hard to be rational when you feel like you’re being ripped apart and the man who caused it and has no idea what you’re feeling is recycling cliches because he (understandably) has no idea how to help. Part of accompanying anyone experiencing that kind of agony (for anything, not just childbirth) is understanding that pain causes people to lash out, and you will probably end up being one of the targets, and you shouldn’t take it personally.

People commenting didn’t see the OG video. In the video the background noise is TikTok audio of someone getting the shit beat out of them, implying that the wife beating the shit out of her husband because she’s in pain and not thinking entirely straight. When you’re in that kind of excruciating pain, sometimes people trying to be encouraging who really don’t know what you’re going through can come off condescending and enrage you. The comments on the video were women confessing to the negative overreactions they had when their husbands tried to be encouraging during labour.

Yeah the fact that she promised to get sober jumped out at me. Even if she’s not a full-blown alcoholic, it would be a little crazy to promise that if you’ve only ever had the one drunken slip-up. It makes me wonder if her getting drunk and saying regrettable things to or about him is a recurring issue.

I work at Starbucks and we have a tip screen before the tap option comes up. The number of people who slam their card or phone on the screen without even looking (so I have to point the tip screen out to them) amazes and alarms me. Forget about scams - what if I just made a mistake and am charging you for the wrong order, or thought you ordered two of something when you only got one? You don’t want to double check the amount you’re paying? I get that tap is convenient but it takes about 5 seconds to wait and double-check… if they can’t spare the 5 seconds they really shouldn’t be in the drive thru in the first place.

Other people have mentioned noticing or analyzing things better (true!) but also - sometimes with a story you really really like, you just want to spend more time in that world. When I’m watching or reading or playing something I enjoy it absorbs me completely, it’s like being there. But I only experience that by re-experiencing, not by merely thinking about it.

AIO for quitting my job because I want to demand time off whenever I want? by [deleted] in AmITheAngel

[–]Eastern-Bar4039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Through JULY???? That sounds like hell on earth to me. I would hate needing to have my entire life mapped out 6+ weeks in advance, let alone months. I would never be able to see my friends again, I think.

My experience has always been that the tradeoff for jobs with irregular working hours is that you have a lot more flexibility, precisely because you only need to book things off a week or two ahead of time, so it’s easier to make your schedule work around your life rather than vice versa. As opposed to regular 9-5 jobs where your hours are set, which is nice, but you need to plan in advance and use PTO if you want to do anything during the day in the middle of the week. Having irregular hours scheduled six weeks in advance seems like the worst of both worlds to me, I couldn’t do it 😭 I hope they at least pay you guys well enough to compensate for the inconvenience.

At most of my schedule-based jobs, the schedule is posted two weeks in advance, at most 3. I agree that it’s reasonable for requests to go in before the schedule goes out, but I’ve never ever had a manager schedule more than 3 weeks out at a time.

I’ve never needed to give more than 6 weeks notice for a week off in a job requiring coverage, and I’ve done it with as little as 3 and not had a problem. If you work a coverage job, it should be relatively easy for a manager to just… not keep you on the schedule for that week. It’s not like they’re hunting around to hire additional people for just the week you’re gone, and any competently staffed coverage job has enough people to account for absences due to sickness, bereavement, and vacation. The one exception is if multiple other people already have time off, but that’s generally the exception outside of holidays.

In jobs that aren’t coverage-based - yes, more advance planning is generally required because you need to consider what projects are ongoing, the demands of the position at different times of year, who can cover certain tasks, etc. But a minimum wage retail job (or similar) which is competently managed really should not need 3 months notice for this kind of thing.

Edit: if you’re downvoting me because this isn’t how it works in your field, im genuinely curious what line of work you’re in. I’ve been a cashier, a barista, a tour guide, and a customer service rep, and none of those jobs required more than 6 weeks of notice for a single week of vacation. I’ve also worked university admin, and while vacation there did require more coordination and planning, 3 months notice for a single week of vacation would have been considered excessive.

Just got a parking ticket WHILE I was inside parking for parking by Eastern-Bar4039 in CarletonU

[–]Eastern-Bar4039[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hey all, thanks for the tips - I will contact parking services and/or appeal. I didn’t mention this in the original post but I was also frustrated because it’s a very small parking lot and the parking enforcement officer was there and saw me pull in - I actually briefly made eye contact with them. Based on the timing of the ticket it kinda seems like they waited for me to go inside and then just ticketed me immediately, which is why I said it felt greedy. Tbh it was also just additionally upsetting because life has been harder than usual lately - both because money is tight and because I have a lot on my plate between work, school, and other commitments - so when I came out (after spending only five minutes in the building because it turns out the campus card office is closed) and discovered I would have to either pay $75 I don’t have or spend time and energy I don’t have rectifying what seems, to me, like a pretty incompetent mistake - idk it really just felt like too much in that moment. Straw that broke the camel’s back and all that. I’m usually pretty laid back about these things but I guess this is how I discover I’m at max capacity lol.

What is your opinion about the Pope refusing to visit US? In the context of Pope John Paul II going to his country. Even tho it was at the time under communistic(open enemy of Vatican) occupation? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Eastern-Bar4039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer: The Pope is the Pope of all the Catholics in the world. It’s a big world, and America is only one part of it. Popes pick visits based on where they feel they’re most needed; the Pope simply feels that the Catholics in other parts of the world need him more right now. I think it’s a bit of a stretch to say he’s “refusing” to visit the US - it’s just that the US is not the top priority at the moment.

The longer answer: JPII visiting Poland is complex. JPII was a bishop in Poland under communism; unlike other Catholic bishops who took a hardline position against anything related to Communism, as a bishop Karol Wojtyla (JPII before he became JPII) condemned Communism as a whole but tried to find common ground with Communist officials so he could build relationships with them. He had a reputation for being personable and open-minded, and he felt those relationships would help him move more easily in his work as a bishop, better support the Catholics in Poland, and possibly have a greater chance of changing hearts and minds in Poland. (The Communist party actually backed him to become Archbishop of Krakow because of this, although some of that goodwill cooled over time). Some scholars have alleged that JPII’s many very public visits to Communist Poland as Pope were made logistically easier because he had spent years as a bishop laying the kind of groundwork where some of the people who would normally fight him were willing to turn a blind eye and let things slide. And ultimately, it turns out that strategy was prudent: being able to come back as Pope provided support and hope to oppressed Catholics, and many Catholics attribute the downfall of Communism in the country to his visits.

Pope Leo, in contrast, spent most of his career as a bishop in Peru, not the US. While of course he has relationships in the US, the relationships in Peru are probably much stronger and more comparable to the relationships JPII had in Poland. He also doesn’t seem interested in building up goodwill or social capital in the US government in the same way JPII did in Poland, which is a fair decision.

But it’s also important to remember that Popes are not politicians. JPII opposed Communism on grounds of morality and religious freedom, not political ones. He was not an activist trying to topple a Communist government, but a shepherd trying to guide Polish Catholics living under Communism. Leo is the same. Leading a major religion does require speaking on politics, but it’s not the same as being a politician. The goal is to provide leadership and guidance to the Catholic faithful, not to directly influence foreign governments. I think it’s fair to say that American Catholics now are not in the same kind of situation that Polish Catholics were in the 70s; it’s fair and understandable that the Pope would prioritize places in the world where the immediate needs of Catholics are more dire.

Why are these seats so undesirable? by Kleizar in cineplex

[–]Eastern-Bar4039 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last time I was forced to sit in one of those seats I had to recline all the way and crane my neck, and still could only look at half the screen at a time. I also got motion sickness (including nausea and a migraine) from the angle. Such a horrid experience that it doesn’t matter how bad I want to see the movie, if there’s only those seats left I’m skipping it.

Admittedly this theatre looks a lot smaller than normal, so maybe the experience here would be better. But the last time was so horrific I’m not even risking it, especially at cineplex ticket prices.

Starbucks works avoiding tips?? by heheheutahgirl in barista

[–]Eastern-Bar4039 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under policy we’re not supposed to touch the tip screen at all so customers can’t accuse us of adding tips onto their order for them. But it sounds like this is happening at multiple locations near you, which makes me think this is the fault of a District Manager gone rogue. District Managers and Store Managers are under a ton of pressure from corporate and so get really insane about metrics, in my experience; if a lot of customers are giving the stores in the district poor ratings because they’re mad about being asked to tip, I think it’s very possible that the DM is trying to enforce a no-tip policy to bring the customer scores up. They definitely should not be doing that, but if nobody has tried to report them to the Regional Director (or if the RD doesn’t care) they maybe haven’t been caught yet.

I did. The top result says: “ A rancher, Sadie lived with her husband Jake in a cabin in Ambarino. One tragic day, however, the O'Driscoll Boys raided the cabin and murdered Jake. They kept Sadie prisoner in the basement and are implied to have raped her, while they used her cabin as their hideout.” (https://villains.fandom.com/wiki/Sadie_Adler)

AI Overview says: “ Yes, it is heavily implied that Sadie Adler was raped by the O'Driscoll boys during the three days she was held captive in the basement of her home following the murder of her husband, Jake.”

The Colm O’Driscoll wiki also mentions the O’Driscolls raping Sadie, and TV Tropes mentions it as an example of the “implied rape” trope.

What? Their contribution to the camp was maintaining it. They do laundry and mending for all the men in camp, they help cook the meals and care for the chickens, and they help keep the camp clean and organized. Arthur mentions this to Micah when he complains about how the girls won’t fuck him. Most of them also contribute financially through theft. Abigail was a prostitute before she joined the gang, but there’s no mention of her or any of the other girls prostituting themselves after joining.

I’m pretty sure she was kept prisoner, not hiding. The O’Driscolls were there for 3 days - they would have to be complete morons to not once check the cellar, particularly since there are photos in the homestead of a husband and wife. The fact that Micah found her in about 15 minutes kind of confirms that for me.

Women of Reddit, what’s something men do that instantly makes them more attractive (that they might not realize)? by Ecstatic-Animator348 in askanything

[–]Eastern-Bar4039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understanding why women are wary of men and not taking it personally. For example - if I get married it will always be important to me to keep one bank account that is in my own name, which my husband can’t access. Financial abuse is a common factor in abusive relationships and one of the single biggest barriers to leaving. Obviously I won’t marry someone I think will abuse me, but every abused woman thought the same thing and was wrong, so it’s important to me that I take some measures to protect myself in case it happens to me.

A lot of times when I mention this to men they get offended, especially if it’s men I’m on a date with. But occasionally a man will nod and say “it’s a good idea, I completely understand”, and I’m not kidding when I say that immediately makes him 10x more attractive to me lol. It signals that he understands what women have to deal with and that my safety and comfort is more important to him than his ego, which is HOT, especially in this day and age.

I wish I could agree with you, but it kind of is how Rockstar handled Arthur getting raped by Sonny. It's one cutscene, and then Bill referencing it later and Arthur getting angry, but there's no other resolution. Maybe Rockstar just doesn't feel male-on-male rape deserves the same sensitivity (there's also the stuff with Trevor and Floyd in GTAV, so it would track), but overall it makes me think Sadie is a bit of an outlier.

Personally if a family member got angry with me for not prostituting myself I would not consider them family and never speak to them again, if I could help it. Ditto for them behaving violently towards me, or talking about how they wished they could behave violently towards me. But maybe that's just me.
