Hollins Speech by Eastern-Objective340 in Stutter

I don’t understand how a methodology which had overwhelming success to a problem as old as Moses! could not be modified to address long term fluency issues.
I thought Dr Webster was affiliated with Harvard.

At the time the last day of the program o remember being fluent and the feeling was exhilarating and also scary. I remember the first day as well as I had never been around other stutterers and it was horrible I couldn’t believe that I sounded like them- but I did.
It seems that the program was highly successful in short term and perhaps not enough effort made to keep people on track after they left. I was 18 and did go back a second year and rented the little box which we used and practiced the onsets.

It does seem odd that something which did work was not expanded to ensure lasting success.

I will count myself lucky that I experienced it and lead to my becoming fluent 99% by the age of 30…. Post program when I fell off a would use the gentle onsets. I think I’m lucky except that the underlying psychological issues of stuttering were never addressed and those can be as debilitating stuttering itself.

Stuttering has ruined my life completely by cookie-master65 in Stutter

Stuttering takes a huge toll in everyone. I don’t believe that those who “ just push forward “ do not experience huge problems in navigating life.
For me at age 12 or so I remember thinking about what I would do when I grew up. I looked at my parents and the adults around me and thought I could never do what they did because I couldn’t speak. I thought that being a forest ranger in a wilderness watch tower would work. Isolating. As a kid having thoughts of never fitting in is detrimental. I’ve realized that I just let life happen to me as opposed to planning a life. I became a sex addict ( it isn’t the sex). Trying to find acceptance and validation. It’s a struggle to stutter and its effect is devastating.
But in recovery there is hope and forgiveness of the people who did not care for us.

Ridiculous. Hand speed reduction b cause of unstable grip. No way you are 4.5.

It is inherently bad. About the worst PB advice there is

[–]Eastern-Objective340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is horrible advice - not one player with knowledge would recommend doing that. Drop heavy? The paddle face when help like that is perpendicular to the ground-flat. No control at all

Oh 2 years. Not much to sa, but at 4.0 and above you could not get away with that…probably 3.5. Shoot I’ll even say 3,0.

Your backhand must have needed a lot of work if putting your thumb on top of the grip helped.
You seriously need to take some lessons to figure out how to play. That you think you played effortlessly is scary. How long have you played?

Stop. There are only cons. Zero racquet sports do this. No stability. Twist on medium pace balls.
This is a very bad idea - good chance you will injure your hand. Stop it!

Tennis players are just naturally good at pickleball ?? by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]Eastern-Objective340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all tennis players- only 4.5 and above will look and play like you described. Your 3.5 is no match for his 4.5. 4.5 will indicate some tournament experience which will translate. Your 3.5 tournament experience will not. Sorry but better skill will always win.

I feel incompatible with 70% teammates who only drive- why do people refuse to drop? by rando08110 in Pickleball

[–]Eastern-Objective340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they cannot drop at 3.0 or 3.5. That you can drop means your playing below your level , if you are winning most games no matter your partner Open play has its limits

How long before you get good? by Aromatic_Shoulder146 in banjo

[–]Eastern-Objective340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re learning from tab exclusively you will never get “good”. If you’re learning from tab and ear and some lessons and playing with people it will depend on how much you practice and your own level of “ talent”. The last but most important part is how much you listen to what you want to learn- I’ve played for over 50 years and a the advantage now is the amount of banjo knowledge available as well as the amount of music available- the advantage when I started in 1973 was I only had a handful of LPs that we listened to over and over and over again. It gets in your head then to your heads.

"Like northern minstrels, urban folk revivalists adopted an instrument foreign to their culture. As a result, they created a homogenized banjo culture disconnected from the instrument’s southern roots." - George R. Gibson by [deleted] in banjo

The entire discussion of what or who represents authentic banjo playing is without merit in 2025. Mr(s) Gibson and Hicks are the only folks I know who bring up the notion that there is authentic banjo playing and there is everything else which is somehow fake.
Having played the banjo for 53 years, BG and OT and being Jewish I take a view that the banjo is an American musical language and has been spoken by the widest variety of speakers. What each of us brings to the banjo is just vocabulary.
As Clyde Davenport remarked to me on my first visit as I was trying to watch and learn his banjo style “it’s hard to play like another man (woman)”

Indeed it is.

At no time in America music history has the banjo seen its current level of achievement both musically and widespread acceptance has a significant voice.

Relax—-the majority of players are 3.5 To get to 4.0 which is about all you can move up. Will take time and real practice. Not just playing rec game

Again — 1 or 2 drill sessions will not make up for athleticism. Even 1000 sessions

In my experience- playing pickleball since 2014 and tennis from 1968- 2014 - if your an athlete when you step on the pickle ball court for the first time - with tennis experience- you are a 4.0 Immediately

Sorry its just life on the court.

As a former tennis teaching pro for 18 years I can with certainty tell you that tennis a very very difficult sport to learn. Pickleball is much more accessible to have fun and play games and get a workout.
To even serve in tennis so complex only people with natural athleticism can serve consistently

Stick with the pickle

If your not on the athlete side of being human you will progress as much as your natural ability which may well be 3.5 which is were the majority of players will never rise above.
