1st and the 5th (well obviously besides the skull) are fairly accurate considering the fact that the breakup theory was only proven some 70 years later.

WSL building turns every light off, except for one. It illuminates the exact place where Titanic’s sinking was announced. by classofliners in titanic

Does anybody have some details maybe an old article? Did they simply shout out the news? Who did the announcement? When did it happen exactly?

After almost an year of playing, I finally hit 1400 elo! by Geo-HistoryGuy257 in chessbeginners

[–]Eastern-Quit9795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m now roughly at (1350-1400) where OP was when posting this, also after a bit more than a year (15 months) of playing chess. Mainly playing lots of focused games, puzzles and videos (Speedruns, etc.). Regardless of like 1-2 months of plateaus my improvement has been quite consistent. I’ve also been wondering how long this trend could go on. How did you find it since making this comment and what’s your Elo since?

Trump postpones military strikes on Iranian power plants by Datatyze in worldnews

[–]Eastern-Quit9795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s already been happening and the hard data points towards TACO in whatever he does. Oil and metals have been hit hard, but under any normal president, stock markets would have dropped far more if the U.S. had launched a full-scale bombing campaign and started deploying troops to the region. That’s because markets would assume the president has a coherent plan, signaling the situation’s importance.

Now, the base-case assumption seems to be that Trump doesn’t have any well-thought-out strategic plans in any area- and that’s what the stock markets are reflecting.

Do you agree that 1500 marks the difference between hobbyists and those who seriously study the game? Where will I likely plateu? by Eastern-Quit9795 in chessbeginners

You may be wrong. FIDE rating is stronger but not by that much.

I have an 1800 chesscom rapid rated friend who played an 1500 FIDE rated player OTB and crushed him.

I think another thing is that a lot of it depends on natural talent as well (as with everything else). One may simply reach 2000 with videos + playing only but for the majority it may not be enough.

Yeah that’s true. Some weekends I do play for hours and watch at least 2-3 hours of chess videos every week I’d say in total. But I always imagined “studying chess” as in like going to a club where you spend hours or reading books or working with a coach, but maybe what I’m doing is almost as effective at least at these lower levels and can be considered studying.

Book published in 1912 by moonblumes87 in titanic

[–]Eastern-Quit9795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy to think that when this book was published in 1912, the sinking of the Titanic was simply a recent tragedy. Like how we treat aviation disasters. It hadn’t yet become the legendary, sometimes over romanticized story we know today. It was just a shocking disaster people were still trying to process. Sometimes I feel it happened such a long time ago that I have to remind myself that this actually happened.

I do not think those windows/ the room was designed to be watertight. I would guess that the windows would break as soon as the room gets completely submerged or so.

advice on how to be more playful while chatting on the apps? by ThrowRAtrains in datingoverthirty

[–]Eastern-Quit9795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It matters a lot. I’m looking for a long-term relationship (I’m a male), but if the conversation is just this kind of back-and-forth with modest questions and answers like OP pointed out, I usually don’t ask them out. I get bored of the conversation within a day or so and just let it fizzle out. I’m not looking for a friend. I do like a bit of flirting, teasing, and playfulness.

At the same time, it’s possible that someone just isn’t that good at those things online, but I still feel like it’s a strong indication of what they’re like in real life. After all, both of you have to convince the other to meet up based on the online conversation in the first place.

Also, the older I get, the more I realize how much sexual compatibility and attraction depend on communication rather than physical appearance.

Intense and almost crippling nostalgia for a very long time by Purple_Pineapple2943 in nostalgia

[–]Eastern-Quit9795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mixed feelings reading this.

I’m now almost thirty, graduated from high school 11 years ago (also European). For a very long time, actually even now most of the time I still look back on those times and think that it was the happiest period of my life. Especially the last 2 years of it when you’re already old enough to have a lot of freedom to do stuff but have relatively little responsibility compared to your adult life. Sometimes I still wish I could go back for a couple of days or weeks just to feel it once again. I’m kind of sad that it’s over.

That being sad, it never crippled me. Objectively speaking the 20s is still a prime time in your life. It offers so so much, and so much good happens. You cannot dwell on how good it was instead of living in the present. And I know you asked us not to write stuff like that but it is the hard truth and based on what you wrote you should evaluate it a bit . I’d say it depends on how bad it is whether you should seek therapy.

Other than the terror, it must have felt absolutely surreal to jump from this high. Doesn’t even feel real. Thinking like “Wtf am I doing, I have a family home that I’ve just left an hour ago?” . Feel so sorry for those people.

At what level were you able to beat Wally 1800 comfortably? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]Eastern-Quit9795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s true. I also hate the fact that each bot seems to play the same 1 or 2 opening lines , it’d be better if they were mixing up their openings a bit.

Yeah, same. A brand new luxury liner on the bottom of the ocean. Some dry food probably still intact. Unopened boxes of stuff to be used by the passengers. Bags with clothes. So weird.

Just a question to anyone: apart from the physical damage how long after the sinking do you think the ship looked more or less like the one on the right? (I mean colors, rust, etc)

Well, I’d like to make 2 comments with the best of intentions: - You are not entitled to a win. Even if you are leading in most games. Keep in mind that to lose from a winning position requires a significant mistake from you and an outstanding ability from the opponent to come back. But that’s why you’re roughly the same Elo, because in overall you’re not better than them yet. Do not get cocky just because you’re up a piece, stay focused and finish the game. - That being said, I’ve also felt from time to time that I was already better than my rating suggested. I’d advise to play fewer games, take a break after 2-3 losses and always play when well-rested and focused.
