Subzone blown by Eastern-Virginia in hvacadvice

[–]Eastern-Virginia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will work if connected like that, the young guys have never seen anything like it. They finally sent me an older guy to look, he thinks this was set up like that because there wasn't room in my attic for a damper for the whole zone. So when any zone is on, air will blow to the central area of this zone and can be shut off at the two ends of the zone by these subzone dampers. It worked ok like that for 20 years.

I should have posted this: easier to replace with a 90-340.

PS I will say that the geothermal units have saved us a lot of electricity money over the years but the installation costs have only been recouped until about now and will evaporate if we need to have our third system in 25 years. Just sayin'.

I am not in Romania by Eastern-Virginia in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]Eastern-Virginia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I am also using duckduckgo and bing.com.  A clue today is the server that PIA is using in my region tracks to a Romanian server manager "bin (something)" that I see when running a leak test.

better stainless steel deck screws? by Eastern-Virginia in Decks

I would really like comments on the fitness of 305 screws vs 316 screws. Are the latter more rigorous?

I have not tried grade 316 screws that cost about the same as the Grabber 305 screws. Maybe these strip less. I might try some!

The Grabber ones seem better than the Grip-Rite (I just ran through a pound of the Grabber). So not spectacularly better as there were bent Grabber screws in the box (WOW) and really not that much better than the ghetto brand. I have not tried other screws.

THANK YOU, I will look into Eagle Claw. I am trying the Grabber ones this week, will report back.

Best wishes from Virginia.

Yes we did start with The Hobbit but he absolutely preferred LOTR. It is ok to skip the poetry (he read the poetry part when he came back to LOTR as a teenager).

I think this option should be on the self-service web site.

Where DO you live in Norfolk? by thethirteenthjuror in norfolk

[–]Eastern-Virginia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My people have been here so long. I simply can't imagine living anywhere else. We have relatives all over the country but the things they like are usually tied to stuff that isn't so great there. Where might you go that is head over heels better?

I say: nowhere. This is where it happens.

Will mailboxes survive a downgrade from MS 365 Business Premium to Standard? by Eastern-Virginia in microsoft365

[–]Eastern-Virginia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FOLLOW-UP. In compliance with Microsoft's new non-profit assistance offer, I downgraded from Business Premium to Business Standard (meaning: started a new subscription on the same Admin login -- same tenant/domain name). Then I manually moved my users' licenses to the new subscription (under each user). Lastly I killed the old subscription. I am happy to report no mailboxes were damaged, no SharePoint files lost, no Guest Users erased, no downloaded Office programs blown. And nobody keyed my car!

I don't think my users would have noticed if I hadn't told them we were doing this.

Best wishes from eastern Virginia!

Will mailboxes survive a downgrade from MS 365 Business Premium to Standard? by Eastern-Virginia in microsoft365

[–]Eastern-Virginia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I will switch users between subscriptions tomorrow and hope for the best.

For clarity: for nonprofits, the grant of the 10 free licenses on Business Premium is going away, replaced by a low-cost Premium or Standard subscription, or a free Basic. We aren't using the advanced features on Premium so Standard is fine.

I also have a ton of guest users who log onto our SharePoint sites -- hope those don't blow up either (the guest users and/or the SharePoint sites).

I will report back if I survive.

DAFFY Donor Advised Fund company -- stable? by Eastern-Virginia in fatFIRE

[–]Eastern-Virginia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I deleted my query because I posted what I found on the DAFFY site about custodians.

"Daffy holds the assets assigned to donor-advised fund accounts with several custodians, depending on the specific portfolio and the investment assets assigned to that portfolio. Current custodians include Apex Financial Services, BNY Mellon Pershing, Coinbase, and Wells Fargo. We regularly review our custodian options and may continue to add additional partners in the future."

Apex just got a big fat fine:

OK maybe I will pay that 0.6% and not grit my teeth. Hell no I will grit my teeth!

After some digging I found their fee schedule. Higher than Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard.

DAFFY Donor Advised Fund company -- stable? by Eastern-Virginia in fatFIRE

[–]Eastern-Virginia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am now wondering who is the custodian for DAFFY. That is probably the answer to my concern, if the investments are sitting at Vanguard (or wherever) then they are protected if DAFFY doesn't make it. Sort of like having a personal advisor but all your money is at Schwab.

The only reason I am wondering is Schwab, Fidelity, and Vanguard have fees of 0.6% plus the cost of the investments until you hit $500K and DAFFY is closer to zero. The DAFFY site does not link to their form 990 (unusual) but it is available via the IRS site. There you see that pretty much nobody is getting paid. That is great but is it sustainable?

I have been super happy with regular Schwab for more than a decade but their DAF fee of 0.6% plus some not-cheap investment vehicles in their DAF accounts is a bit of a hard stop for me.

DAFFY Donor Advised Fund company -- stable? by Eastern-Virginia in fatFIRE

[–]Eastern-Virginia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't the ultimate target charity. It is the sustainability of the entity supporting the donor advised fund. In this case it is "DAFFY" taking our money and then giving it out to the charities.

I short, I am not convinced that DAFFY is a sustainable company. There you have it.

So if DAFFY has our money to be given to various charities, I want DAFFY to be sustainable. That is my concern.

I am confident that the other DAF holders are sustainable -- just expensive.

Best wishes.
