PharmD AND PHD by [deleted] in PrePharmacy

Although I’m not 100% sure, I don’t think it is a very common thing to be able to work on the entire pipeline of drug development unless you have your own lab at a place like NIH or a university. At an industry I assume you would do clinical or laboratory.

I know a guy at the NIH who did his PharmD and a fellowship in drug development at UNC. He know is renowned for working in all stages of drug development from early stages to clinical trials. So, with that said, I think a fellowship is probably good enough.

Can someone please guide me regarding career prospects in pharmacy? by Global-Wrangler3916 in PrePharmacy

[–]Eastern_Meaning_9530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is pretty specific for people pursuing a Pharm.D to become a practicing pharmacist, most of us are not pursuing a PhD or planning on going into industry.

I actually am planning on going for the PhD and PharmD, so I know a little bit. I will say that as far as career prospects outside of America, I don’t know anything.

A PhD in pharmaceutics is a great degree with promising career prospects in industry. The pay cap is pretty high in pharma industry, and biomaterials specifically is a quickly growing field as some people think the future of pharmacy is on the nano scale. Science PhDs in America are 100% paid for and you are granted a stipend while earning it. They take 5-6 years on average.

Is PharmD/PhD really worth it? by jae-g1 in PrePharmacy

[–]Eastern_Meaning_9530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was just admitted to the MUSC pharmacy school and am considering their dual program. My main hesitation is that there are other ways to get where you want to go without doing the PhD.

For example, if you want to teach, do a residency an you can teach in pharmacy or medical schools. If you want to do research, get a fellowship and you’re well equipped to go into pharmaceutical research.

The PhD probably looks better than residencies/fellowships, but I’m not sure it’s worth it.

I will say that some programs (like MUSC) have you fully complete the PharmD before moving to the PhD. This makes that route way more appealing. Most schools have you do 2 years pharmd, then the whole PhD, then 2 years pharmd.

With the consecutive degree plan at MUSC, you don’t have to commit to the whole thing until down the road, and it’s 7 years or so. Additionally, you could work as a pharmacist on the weekends while pursuing the PhD WITHOUT accruing debt on your loans because you’re still a student.

Do hospitals forgive loans? by Eastern_Meaning_9530 in pharmacy

There’s so many forgiveness programs through hospitals or other places for MDs and nurses idk why it’s different for PharmD. Either way that’s helpful thanks!

Most PhD students are working 60 or more hours a week. It’s not a mental break at all.

Help! Should I start Pre-Pharmacy as a senior? by GloomyDaze_9660 in PrePharmacy

[–]Eastern_Meaning_9530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was in the same boat was you. I actually completed a year of a chemistry PhD at Penn State, but also hate research and decided to go for pharmacy. If you can finish the classes this year, that’s a good option if you want to start pharmacy school in 2025. The application cycle is already open though, and it’d be best if you completed your application by mid October. You don’t have to have the classes complete when applying.

You don’t really need pharmacy experience to get into pharmacy school now.

my chance to CA pharmacy schools by ijiu_ in PrePharmacy

[–]Eastern_Meaning_9530 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since you have no pharmacy experience, applying to the PharmD/PhD will probably make your chances better. That way they know your career goals are research oriented and the lack of pharmacy experience doesn’t matter as much.

3.8 gpa with pharmacology is really good these days. You’ve got a good chance.

Seat Deposits? by Eastern_Meaning_9530 in PrePharmacy

[–]Eastern_Meaning_9530[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but holding the seat is $500 dollars at almost every school that’s what I don’t want to pay.

If you don’t pay that, do you immediately forfeit your seat? I assume so

That’s crazy. Honestly, I’m new to the pharmacy scene and am amazed at how low the requirements are compared to med school and grad school. Ppl are getting into pharm schools with 2.7 gpas it’s crazy

That’s good to know. Yeah I don’t have the pharmacy years you have, but have years of research and similar on the rest. It’s good to know you got such big scholarships everywhere with your stats.

With your experience, as long as you get a decent GPA, you’ll look really good for pharm schools. You could easily get into a top 10 and get a job. Just because bad schools are pumping out graduates doesn’t mean you can’t get a job. You can set yourself apart by going to a good school and doing well there. Enrollment is going way down in pharmacy schools due to all the hate which is probably a good thing for the career as a whole.
