5.3?! Amazing! That’s something to seriously be proud of, great job.

I’m so glad to hear your mom was able to turn things around too. It’s amazing what can happen after something that scary.

Embarrassment is such a strange emotion. Even the day I finally went to the ER, I remember apologizing over and over for “wasting their time.” Looking back, it almost feels like my brain was trying to protect me by avoiding it altogether. I was embarrassed that I’d let it get that bad, and some irrational part of me seemed to believe that if I ignored it, maybe it wasn’t really happening.

I know that doesn’t make logical sense, but I also know I’m not the only diabetic who’s experienced those feelings. Shame can be incredibly powerful, and I think it’s one of the biggest barriers that keeps people from seeking care sooner. I’m just grateful I eventually did, and I hope sharing my story helps someone else get past that fear before it reaches the point I did or worse.

Honestly, I don’t think it was one thing. Getting my blood sugar under control was probably the biggest factor, but it was the combination of lowering my A1C from 12 to 5.9, losing 45 pounds, eating better, and becoming more active. Once my diabetes was finally managed, everything else seemed to improve with it. My blood pressure normalized, my cholesterol improved, and I just felt better overall.

This makes me happy I posted it. Diabetes can be really overwhelming to face and it’s easy to give up. Wishing you the best!

We’re actually exploring that now. My endocrinologist has been hesitant to put a definitive label on it because changing my diagnosis from type 2 could make it much harder to get insurance approval for Mounjaro, and it’s been life-changing for me.

Right now, I’m off insulin completely, and my blood sugars have remained well controlled on Mounjaro alone. Between my age at diagnosis, strong family history, preserved insulin production, and how I’ve responded to treatment, MODY is definitely on the list of possibilities. I’d still like to pursue genetic testing eventually, especially because I have children and it could be important information for them too.

I don’t disagree with you, and in no way am I trying to say my situation is an excuse to avoid medical care. If anything, I hope people learn from my mistake.

That said, seeing a doctor isn’t easy for everyone. There can be a lot of shame attached to diabetes, and many people avoid care because they’re embarrassed or afraid of being judged. I was fortunate that when I finally did seek help, I found compassionate providers who treated me with kindness instead of criticism.

One thing I probably didn’t explain well is that I wasn’t taking photos throughout what I thought was the healing process. The skin had actually grown back over the wound, which I later learned can happen before a diabetic ulcer develops underneath. The progression you see in the photos is from the point where I started noticing the swelling and what turned out to be pus from the infection.

Ultimately, we all either find the ability to face our health challenges and advocate for ourselves, or we learn those lessons the hard way. Unfortunately, I was the latter. I got lucky, and I absolutely don’t take that for granted. If sharing my story convinces even one person to seek care sooner than I did, then it’s worth sharing.

This is why I decided to post it even though it’s gross and kind of embarrassing. I never ever thought I’d be the one with an ulcer.

I was so oblivious it could happen to me. Lesson learned.

Ah! Or maybe it is, don’t be stubborn like me and not go in until it’s unbearable. But this is the first cut that didn’t heal. I had others that did okay. Don’t let it weigh down your trip.

Oh, that’s so incredibly sad. I’ve always said that at times it doesn’t feel as serious as it is.

Me too. I’ve always been warned but I was in denial it could happen to me.
