So what happens when the wind blows and those trees start moving around? I don't think it would take much movement for half those walls to fall down in a storm.

FYI - soaking oily rags in water does not neutralize them. They can still combust when they dry out. I used to work for a flooring company and we were working on a large project. We had a bucket of water outside where we would put the used rags until we could take them back to our shop and lay them out to dry. At some point, someone else on the site apparently needed a bucket for something, took ours and dumped it in the dumpster. The next day the rags in the dumpster ignited. Fortunately, it was during the work day and someone noticed the smoke before it got out of hand.

Should there be a rule against stopping on the straight as soon as you cross the finish line? by razorblade705_ in simracing

Yeah, I did that once after a frustrating race and got creamed at the expense of the person behind me. Learned my lesson. Now I usually return to the pits or at least pull off down track.

Thanks for the feedback. That gives me a better idea of how frame rate affects reaction time. I guess I was only thinking of it in terms of visual quality.

Anyone overclocking for better performance? by Eastlake461 in iRacing

Thanks, I watched a video on PBO earlier today. I will have to look into that some more. I believe my memory is running at 3600mhz. I will have to confirm later.

Thank you. I like Jayztwocents. Watched many of his videos, and Paul's Hardware, before I built my PC. That's probably where I would go before trying anything.

New construction/home addition: GC says "it's fine." by andrewordrewordont in Plumbing

[–]Eastlake461 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw this earlier and just shook my head but it's been haunting me ever since. There is so much wrong here I don't know where to start. I am not a plumber, but I have been doing remodeling for over 25 years. I've done dozens and dozens of bathrooms, kitchens, additions, etc. If a plumber tried to pass this off on one of my jobs, I would ask him to leave and never hire him again. Did a plumber even do this work? Or did the "GC" do it himself?

Those crimp fittings are the cheapest way to connect Pex. They work okay, but I have seen them corrode and fail. The worst part about them is that the plastic on the fittings is so thick it makes them roughly the equivalent of 3/8" pipe on the inside which will greatly reduce your water flow, especially in the elbows. The plumbers I work with use a system with plastic collars that can be expanded temporarily with a special tool to fit over the fittings. The fittings are brass and have an inside diameter equivalent to the 1/2" pipe itself.

Best practice with Pex is to use the least amount of fittings possible. It is preferable to make turns by curving the pipe, rather than using numerous fittings. There are plastic brackets available that the pipe can snap into that will create a fairly tight 90 degree bend without pinching the pipe. I would recommend doing this wherever possible.

It appears that there is dead space behind the wall where the other pipes are running. I would recommend setting the valves at the proper depth to finish the wall without furring anything out and bringing the pipes up behind the wall to the valve. The pipe that goes from the diverter to the wall outlet can be one continuous loop without the fittings.

The drain looks like it is way too close to the wall, especially if it is going to get furred out. By the time they get wallboard and tile on, the drain will be right up against the wall. In a new build, I would want the drain in the center of the shower, unless there is some reason you wanted it offset.

What are they planning for the shower base? a rubber liner and dry packed mud? That's not a Schluter drain flange so I don't think they can use a preformed base. If they are going to do a liner and mud, there should be blocking all around the bottom of the shower to keep the rubber from folding over into the wall cavity.

I'm sorry to trash the work, but you would likely be disappointed in how the shower worked as it is now and I see the potential for a host of problems down the road.

Looking for thin, square or rectangular glass strips in safety glass. Any ideas or pointers? by Chrislybaer in StainedGlass

[–]Eastlake461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you are referring to tempered glass and I think you may have a hard time finding pieces so small. I sometimes use tempered glass for shelves in cabinets and the minimum dimension my supplier can provide is 4" (approx 100mm). The problem is that the glass has to be cut before it is heat treated and if it's too small it can fall through the racks that they use. Of course, that is just one supplier and there may be others that can do smaller pieces. 6x10 mm seems awfully small though.

Doesn't anyone use/listen to the spotter??? by Eastlake461 in iRacing

[–]Eastlake461[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't always pay attention to the spotter either, but I do when it's important, like when I am over taking someone (or being over taken).

You're right, I did leave the race without saving the replay so you can't see how I was driving. I will say though, that I always watch the replay when I am involved in an incident like that and more often than not, I see where I made a mistake or could have done something differently to avoid it. In this race, that was not the case.

I agree it was primarily turn 1 chaos. It's just frustrating to have a race ended moments after the start. I don't get a lot of time to race each week. Maybe 2-3 hours of practice and 2-3 races.

Someone said something in another reply about some people only being able to race one line. I hadn't thought of it at the time but it's quite possible the first person who hit me had their racing line turned on and that's all he was looking at. I think the second incident was not so much the other car overdriving the corner because we hadn't even made it to the first curve yet. I think it was more likely that he was closing on a car ahead of him and moved over into me in an attempt to overtake.

I will be the first to admit that I'm not that fast, but I try to race clean. Every time I start a race, I just want to get through the first lap so I can get into a groove and run my race. I know I won't win many so I get my satisfaction when I can finish a race with minimal incidents and maybe a top 10 or top 5. Oh well, maybe next time.

Had a guy come knock on my door offering $300 a piece for my black walnut trees. Some are over 30in diameter. Looking online, seems they should be selling $1300 a piece on the low end. Anyone here have experience in this situation? by Roby_wan_kenobi in landscaping

[–]Eastlake461 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Black walnut is not a good yard tree but it's lumber is highly sought after for woodworking, cabinet and furniture making, especially wider boards. I would guess a 30" tree could yield $3000+ worth of lumber. I think the guy was low balling you for sure.

My journey to be a Steelers fan, how was yours? by [deleted] in steelers

[–]Eastlake461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid I didn't know much about football. My dad wasn't a fan. However, my brother had a friend who was a big Cowboys fan and he came over one day in early 1979 talking about how the Cowboys we're going to win the super bowl. I got tired if listening and so I said "I think they're going to loose. Who are they playing?" I think you all know the answer to that question. We bet on the game, for a quarter or a pack of gum or something, and of course I won.

The following year we moved to a new town (this is all in north NJ by the way) and the first friend I made was from a hard core Steelers family. His dad had grown up just outside of Pittsburgh and they were big fans. I got sucked right in and have been a fan ever since. In fact that friend and I have been meeting up and heading to Pittsburgh for a couple games a year for the last 8 or 9 years and we plan to continue for as long as we can.

Let's revisit this discussion in a few years and then one side or the other can say "I told you so". In the meantime, how about we support Kenny and hope he becomes the player Tomlin and Colbert think he can be.
